Do you eat childhood comfort food…

When you’re ill/feeling down/a bit blah?

I live abroad so it’s sometimes hard to get, but I headed to my local *British shop, which I rarely go to today. I’m feeling achey and a bit fluey, just a bit rubbish.
I purchased potato cakes (mum gave me these when ill as a child 🤷🏻‍♀️) crumpets, Lucozade (turns out I don’t like it anymore 🤮) Heinz chicken soup (used to have Ox tail, but wasn’t going there!) Mintolas and Munchies, a Walnut whip, Vimto, Monster munch and angel delight (very bad and just not the same!)
I probably do this once per year and usually in the winter as I start to feel homesick.
Does anyone else?

Heinz tomato soup.
Poached eggs on toast - the most special was when DBro made them for me.
Mashed potato - I could eat it on it’s own with butter, grated cheese & black pepper
Butterscotch Instant Whip ( not sure you can still buy it)
Bananas sugar & milk

You're all very good with your comfort food.
Mine is crisps, liquorice toffees and cola.

All of which were very restricted as a child.

@Lippykidsonthecorner I had the same Lucozade experience. Df bought it when we were ill. Got some one time thinking I was going to love it and it's revolting!

TwoMonthsOff · 08/08/2022 19:33

I still have salad cream as it reminds me of mum in the 70’s 🥰

Peas and bisto gravy! A big bowl of the stuff, covered in salt and pepper. Or Heniz tomato soup with cheese grated on top. I could happily live off either of those at any time, but they’re especially good when I’m down

Ooh, cheese grated on top of tomato soup? Now that sounds like a good idea!

Life changing I tell you!

Inthesameboatatmo · 08/08/2022 19:41

Yep I do. But mines Farleys rusk with cold milk.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/08/2022 19:53

Cuppy eggs for me.

2 lightly boiled eggs, scooped into a small cup (preferably one with Peter Rabbit or Miss Piggy on the front that is languishing at the back of a kitchen cupboard). Add a knob of butter and white pepper. Mash eggs into small chunks. Eat with spoon (with white bread and butter or toast).

thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/08/2022 20:20

@maddiemookins16mum I came on here to say egg in a cup!

Also -bread soaked in hot gravy.

Lemonade that's been left to go flat.

dudsville · 08/08/2022 20:23

My comfort food is, like others, tomato soup, but with a grilled cheese. I was always given black tea with sugar when i was ill, so that's another go to for me, and mums tuna tray bake - which i can never get to taste the same as it did when i was a kid.

Angelofthenortheast · 08/08/2022 20:23

Another one here for Spaghetti Hoops on toast!

katesbushh · 08/08/2022 20:28

Rusks with warm milk. I love them and always have them if I've been feeling unwell or fed up.

missverstaendnis · 08/08/2022 20:30

I give you scrambled eggs on mashed potato,
Boiled eggs in mustard sauce on boiled potato,
Sliced cucumber in sour cream dressing with boiled potato.

I let you guess where I grew up before moving to the UK 😂

user1745 · 08/08/2022 20:35

This isn't even a childhood comfort food because I started making it in adulthood, but, instant mash and baked beans in a mug, with melted cheese on top.

SummerLobelia · 08/08/2022 20:41

Oooh! Just recalled. Instant noodles with an extra stock cube in for taste, plus some chilli flakes and a beaten egg swirled through. Instant Chinese-esque noodle soup. When I am particularly motivated I also put in prawsn and sprinkle with coriander.

I used to be a Boarding school house mistress and this was a Friday night treat for the girls which we would eat in front of Sabrina the Teenage witch.

Lippykidsonthecorner · 08/08/2022 21:49

Farleys rusk with warm milk, to go w little soft…yes, or with butter on like a biscuit

Mashed potato is so comforting, eat lots in winter.

The tater ash sounds amazing with the brown sauce

We used to have salad cream on everything, was mayo not around 🤷🏻‍♀️I used to love corned beef & salad cream sandwiches😬

Homemade lasagna with boiled potatoes and butter is my ultimate, mum never makes it now, but I can do it the same. Kind of not the point to spend time making your own comfort food though if not really easy and quick!

@SummerLobelia Yes 🤣As a very early teen, my mum used to take my sister and I to the swimming baths on a Friday night and we then have a *Treat of a pot noodle 😅and we’d watch Roseanne, Cheers, Golden girls etc

Oh my god yes! They were on little plasticky sticks and I used to always want a red one. Glad they’re not about anymore. The stickiness of a lolly and all the enjoyment of a kid with a whistle!

They sell them at my parents’ local chemist. That place is a time warp.

BarrelOfOtters2 · 08/08/2022 21:59

Soda farls toasted with butter and cheddar.
heinz tomato soup and white bread
chip butty but made with oven chips rather than from the industrial sized deep fat fryer we had as a kid

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2022 22:04

I had a total craving for Farley's rusks today, but couldn't find any. :(

Heinz tomato soup with toast

Yes to those whistle lollipops!

Lucozade is horrible - so sweet and sticky. We used to feel so excited when allowed to have it as kids when ill!

I still like salad cream too. If I make a quiche, I like to serve it with '1970s salad' (iceberg lettuce, cucumber, radishes, spring onions, beetroot, salad cream)

Notimeforaname · 08/08/2022 22:08

Wotsits dipped into dairylea spreadable.

Mum used to make her version of corned beef hash. It was literally just buttery mash with corned beef and salt but it was delicious, a hug on a plate. Served with brown sauce 😋

Surely that IS corned beef hash, no?!

certainly how my mum did it. Even better if you put it in shortcrust pastry and bake it. A traditional culinary delight from the North East, where my dad hails from. When his gran gave my mum her recipe, she knew she was part of the family!!!

For me the comfort food when feeling down is choppy egg (aka egg in a cup). When done properly, it’s mixed with butter but recently DH has made it for me using fat free Greek yogurt to try to maintain SW but it just not the same. Tasty enough, but not a hug in a mug. My mum used to do it for me with toast or bread and butter when I used to go to “play school” before I started Primary School. I think we’d just call it a playgroup now. It wasn’t a crèche as I didn’t go every day. Sometimes it was mornings, sometimes it was afternoons but the choppy egg days were always my favourite.

Before we joined SW, buttery choppy egg was always our sandwich filling of choice for days out and long journeys like flights to Lanza to visit his parents after they retired. (I’m sure it made us very popular with our fellow passengers!! 😷)

Some of my mates think that I must really miss out with DH being allergic to mayonnaise, but when it comes to choppy egg, I definitely do not think so!!!

LubaLuca · 08/08/2022 22:12

My mum still sorts me out with ground rice pudding (with a blob of jam) and Iced Gems when she thinks I need comfort.

Nanalisa60 · 08/08/2022 22:13

Fish finger sandwich, has to been thick white beard with butter and tomatoe sauce.
