To be sick of the heat now?

I live in the South and it's been stupidly hot here for what feels like months. Just seen the weather forecast for the week and it's going to be mid 30s again. I hate it so much! I feel really unwell in that kind of heat. It's impossible to sleep and it makes the kids crazy. AIBU to be wishing for Autumn?

I’m in London and don’t think it’s that hot. Those two days were bad, hence all the fires but otherwise it’s been fine. Tonight there’s a cool wind. Makes me realise people have NO concept of how cold I am the rest of the year.

I love the long days that feel like they go on forever. Fewer clothes to worry about. Gentle flattering light. Everyone looking a bit burnished. Bright colours, pretty dresses, pedicures.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/08/2022 22:47

It makes me feel low level miserable all the time especially with no decent rain. I wouldn't mind if we got a decent thunder storm after each bit of hot weather but it's just relentless. It also sets my sciatica off.

bloodyplanes · 08/08/2022 22:55

I love autumn its my favourite time of year. However yabu! It's been a lovely summer which is unusual in this country! Im happy to enjoy it while its here.

DanglingMod · 08/08/2022 22:56

Its not that pleasant having to change your clothes three times a day with sweat, is it? So much washing!

And the garden and plants are just ruined. I've barely been outside this summer ad I just burn instantly.

Can't wait for Autumn (not even in the SE. The East Mids has been as dry - zero rain - and almost as hot).

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2022 22:57

I find it so hard to get anything done - the heat zaps my energy. I've booked a weekend away this week and I'm dismayed to see in will be in the low 30s - we want to be out and about and walking around! It's bad enough I've just realised our room is on the third floor and there's no lift...

LilacPoppy · 09/08/2022 00:30

@DanglingMod why would you need to change multiple times a day? Use deodorant and stay in the shade as much as possible!

Pericombobulations · 09/08/2022 00:38

Another MS'er who is struggling in this heat. Not looking forward to the next week, and have cleared my diary as much as possible, sadly have to go for a hospital appointment tomorrow afternoon.

We bought a portable air con unit a couple of years ago for the lounge which made a difference, but our bedroom was awful last month, so treated ourselves to another small one for up there to get through the next week. The rest of the house is still an oven so dont look forward to bathroom visits.

piecesofham · 09/08/2022 01:13

If your lawn is dry we used to jump in the shower, have a quick wash and shampoo and then put the plug in, shave/ condition/ rinse and take that water out in buckets and throw over the lawn, it never did it any harm!

Agreed, those two days were hot, but otherwise it has been nice. I am not really understanding why people find it so appalling - isn't high 20s/low 30s normal summer max temperatures for the South?

Fairyliz · 09/08/2022 06:47

Wait until the winter when you get your heating bill and it’s £10000 for five minutes of heat a day.
You will be wishing it was hot then.

SleeplessInEngland · 09/08/2022 07:26

There’s a weird number of people on this forum who don’t seem to realise mid-20s and mid-30s aren’t the same.

It would be brilliant if that worked 😅

fernz · 09/08/2022 07:49

I hate it too. I struggle to exercise when it's this hot so just feel lethargic all the time. At least when it's cooler it's easy to just wear more clothes but nothing makes it better in extreme heat. The local green spaces have been on fire repeatedly and plants are dying in the garden too.

Antarcticant · 09/08/2022 07:52

What I'm tired of is - not people online describing their own situations - but the media reporting heat and lack of rain as if everyone is experiencing it. Apart from that short heatwave a few weeks ago, it's barely been above 20 where I am and we've had rain more days than not. Tired of the southern-centric attitude from the BBC and all the rest.

Sympathies, though, to everyone who is struggling.

I'm a therapist, working indoors, in a room with no direct sun (until late pm) - but even with the use of both mitchum roll on and spray, I'm still sweating and having to shower/change multiple times during the day.

Turns out, man handling bodies all day every day, when it hasn't dipped below 25 for weeks, and is mostly incredible muggy, will do that.

Never mind doing it with a lack of sleep, and I dread to think of whats happening to wildlife with ponds drying up, plants dying etc.

I broke up from uni the 2nd week of June, and it's been consistently like this since then. With no rain, and none forecast within the next 2 weeks weather report either.

But it hasn't been mid-30s in London over the past few weeks. It's been mid-20s. Yesterday was the warmest day for a while and it was max 29, I believe.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 09/08/2022 08:09

I'm with you (also in the South)

Tbf I don't think this is the worst heatwave we've ever had, but I don't enjoy feeling constantly sticky, suffering with raging hayfever and the bloody flies are driving me up the wall.

Temp about 5 degrees lower and a weekly better of an overnight thunderstorm would be great.

I was on holiday in Yorkshire the week after the heatwave and it was bloody lovely!

Hellothere54 · 09/08/2022 09:29

I am an autumn lover (already buying decor 😳) but I am sort of enjoying the recent weather - It’s just the mugginess I can’t stand. A few days have been hotish but with a deliciously cooling breeze and that has been lovely. I have a 2 up, 2 down cottage so my front door is in the living room so I just open up the back door and the front door (which I put a thin curtain over for privacy) and catch the through breeze! It’s when it is muggy and still and you can’t breathe that I hate.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 09/08/2022 09:33

I’m up north so we’ve had some rain recently. I love summer. My mental health thrives on the longer daylight and the sun. I don’t like crazy temps but up to thirty I’m ok.

I don’t mind being warm and up here it’s not too bad. But ask me again at the end of the week when I’m not on my days off on and it’s boiling on my ward! Although I think we need to get used to it with temps rising.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 09/08/2022 09:35

Also autumn is never what it’s hyped to be. Always dark damp and soggy round my way with maybe the odd nice day. Then people complain about Halloween and bonfire night and fireworks….. never happy.

And, for me at least, that's been fine. High 20s isn't particualy nice in London, but fine.

It's the 5 days in a row of 30+ starting tomorrow that will be shit. And other people saying 'oh just enjoy it' strangely doesn't seem to help.

stuntbubbles · 09/08/2022 11:22

I’m in London and really struggling. Opening the front door feels like opening the oven, just a wall of heat most days. Though the mornings and nursery run are pleasant, everything from 11 til 6 is just grim. And our house holds onto the heat; feel like I’ve had a permanent migraine for weeks.

The garden is utterly fried, our water butts ran out long ago and grey water isn’t cutting it. Only the jasmine, lavender and rosemary are thriving; roses, hydrangeas and anything thirsty are burned to a crisp. Nearby blackberries are often shrivelled.

I do like the “leave the house without a jacket” vibe of summer, and leisurely evenings, but I’m rarely doing the first as it’s too hot to venture out at lunchtime (WFH), and the latter is lost on me because the endless heat migraine and exhaustion drives me to bed as soon as DD is down.

We need some rain! Not the endless winter dirge. But summer is still summer even with the occasional shower, it’s not like you lose the languid balmy evenings or the jacketless life if it rains every now and then.

Chipsahoy · 09/08/2022 21:22

sympathies for all those struggling. First summer in north east Scotland and I’m not envious of or missing weather in midlands wherever used to live.
Its been dry and sunny and not about 26c

girlfrien · 09/08/2022 21:32

Feeling sad that the nights are now drawing in. Summer goes too fast. Winter drags.

It’s not lovely though.

It’s not lovely to you. It’s perfectly lovely to me and of course you can function normally. Don’t be so dramatic.

Did you know that lots and lots of people are on medication that actively interrupts being able to regulate your body temperature? And some people have health conditions that also do this. And some people live in high rise flats that heat up to temperatures that are way higher than what’s outside? Lots of people really can’t function as normal in hot weather unfortunately.

Apologies if you did know all this.
