to fill up our small paddling pool?

Okay quick poll...who is going to fill their toddlers paddling pools? We put water into ours this morning, half filled and then I read an email from our water company thanking everyone for saving water and encouraging us to shower less and now I'm filled with guilt and shame. I feel like the neighbours are all going from behind their blinds 'look at those ignorant arseholes at number **' 🫣

if it's a small one and you keep the water a couple of days (use a washing up bowl to wash feet and reduce sand/grass going in) then I think it's fine.
use the water after use to water your plants.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 08/08/2022 08:02

Do you really want food businesses to stop producing food etc. Grow up.

There are loads of businesses out there that use water and don't grow food, though 🙄 it's pretty obvious I didn't mean "let's stop growing food", ffs.

I'm talking about golf courses, leisure centres, lidos, garden centres, car washes, window cleaners, people who power wash driveways and patios...

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 08:30

power washing your patio is not allowed when there is a hose pipe ban
my neighbour washes his car every weekend, which seems odd to me since i never ever wash mine!

midgetastic · 08/08/2022 09:08

But can golf courses actually use mains water under a hosepipe ban ?

They can use their own reserve if they have one but I think they are affected by the ban

balalake · 08/08/2022 09:12

Whilst you should not be full of guilt, I don't think you should do it.

Disagreeing with useless water companies not fixing leaks and the privatisation of water should be expressed in the ballot box. If you voted Tory in the 1980s you are part of the problem.

We are showering less, not letting taps run, collecting hand-washing/rinse water for garden and I am only washing what clothes are most needed for a couple of weeks. We did fill our small 1m sq pond up yesterday because it was dangerously low and we didn’t want the frogs and fish to die in high temps next week.

If all of us in drought areas make an effort to be careful, hopefully that will reduce the likelihood of standpipes in the street, etc. And the water companies need to be held to account for their behaviour too!

Yes I’ll be topping up my pond. The after evaporates really quickly and I won’t let the fish die. Our letter actually says no pond maintenance or filling!

You may not be allowed to do it yourself but I'm sure you can still pay a business to come and do your garden and power wash?

@sunsetsandsandybeaches
but why is it necessary in this climate crisis?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 08/08/2022 10:52

I don't actually have any skin in the game as my DC are grown up so don't need a paddling pool, but curious to know about water in pools which is chlorinated - can this still be used to water plants when it's time to change it?

This is the first year I have had a proper garden and worry that if there is a hosepipe ban that my plants will die and the bees won't be able to use them. We did no mow May and it was really interesting to see the difference in the garden.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 08/08/2022 10:53

I think we will see much less use of hot tubs because of the price of electricity at least.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 11:02

i cant believe the irresponsiblle attitudes on this thread
what has this place come to where people dont seem to care

I didn't say it was necessary.

But why is it okay to pay someone to garden, water plants, clean windows and power wash, but you can't do it yourself to save money?

There's no logic behind any of it, that's all I'm trying to say.

I saw that this morning. Yet filling a hot tob is exempt. Sorry but keeping a livestocked pond topped up comes above hot tub. Midlands here so no ban but if my pond needs topping up and they've put a ban in, I will be topping up the pond. Or I guess I could fill the hot tub, and then transfer it over.. ........

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/08/2022 14:17

That's insane! Seriously, you can't top up a pond but you can fill a hot tub!

Yup. Its mad. You can also wash out a wheely bin but not water vegetables.

Southern Water doesn’t mention hot tubs as an exemption that I can see. I’d assume it comes under domestic pool.

Also lists the restrictions on commercial for the blah blah blah what about businesses lot.

The water companies must set individual criteria as that one allows livestock pond topups also

Some people just aren't happy unless they've got an excuse to judge others.

You look after yourself, and leave other people the fuck alone.

Chocolatiestchocolate · 08/08/2022 22:53

Well it may be selfish but i chlorinate our big pool and fill once a year it was filled in april, Test Levels daily and maintain it.

The paddling pool for when it's just the toddlers has been filled and i chlorinated that this time so its been filled once since last week . It holds no more than a bath full. I net out the grass etc as I do with the big pool so its still crystal clear and wont Need emptying for a while.

We're a commercial premesis, so we're exempt for like washing the company vehicles but we wont as we normally would and are ' allowed' to do. ( 3 vehicles) although i know we'd use much less water than taking them to a hand car Wash place that leaves their water running. Where as we switch ours off whilst soaping it etc.

So in the grand scheme of things, 1 small paddling pool is nothing compared to what we ' could' use.

These sorts of threads always make me a bit depressed. It’s the ‘I’m all right Jack…no-one else’s business…I’ve paid for it’.

Climate change and over-population and all their associated problems are everyone’s business, unfortunately. We all have to try harder (unless we’re really not bothered about what sort of lives our children and grandchildren will live).

If you live somewhere where there isn’t currently a water shortage and where you still get rain: lucky you. Enjoy watering your grass and washing your car!

Couldn't agree more 👏

When your decisions affect others yes people can judge. When we run out of water it will affect us all that is why people rightly judge.
