to fill up our small paddling pool?

Okay quick poll...who is going to fill their toddlers paddling pools? We put water into ours this morning, half filled and then I read an email from our water company thanking everyone for saving water and encouraging us to shower less and now I'm filled with guilt and shame. I feel like the neighbours are all going from behind their blinds 'look at those ignorant arseholes at number **' 🫣

No hosepipe ban here either South West.

That's a lot of assumption from a 10-word post. I've also never voted Conservative in my life. What were you trying to achieve by posting that?

Clearly they were saying you were showing Tory-Voter style arrogance and disregard for the environment?

They were actually talking about supporting deporting people to Rwanda and something about the NHS. But hey-ho, it's not applicable regardless.

Well it looks like they were reacting to this, which looks they were saying you were showing Tory-Voter style arrogance and disregard for the environment?

Just fill it up OP, it's nobody's business but yours x

SheilaWilde · 07/08/2022 23:59

The people saying 'I don't care/what difference does it make/I've paid for it/my kids deserve it' will be the same people who will be up in arms when schools can't open in September because they've used ALL THE FUCKING WATER.

It's astounding that people don't understand the correlation between rain and the water that comes out of the taps. IF IT DOESN'T RAIN THERE ISN'T ANY WATER. USING IT FOR PADDLING POOLS IS NOT ESSENTIAL.

I despair.

PrezelwithMarmite · 08/08/2022 00:03

We're on hosepipe ban.
Ill bw doing ours.. Ita the same amount as a bath. Its going to be a heatwave. Im keeping the kids cool.

johnd2 · 08/08/2022 00:09

All the people who say I'm going to do x because it's a drop compared with the millions of litres of daily leakage.
You do realise that for every million litres a day leaked, spread across all households that's just a shot glass full per house.
So even with several hundred million litres of leakage, maybe you can flush your toilet an extra time or fill half a watering can and you've already matched the leakage amount.
It's not like we can each compare to the overall leakage, we can only compare to our share of the leakage which is not really much.

johnd2 · 08/08/2022 00:12

Correction, it's 3 billion litres a day actually, so that's a few flushes of the toilet each person. But even so it's not in for a penny in for a pound with that.

Unbelievably selfish.
Do you understand where the water you're using to fill up your paddling pool comes from?

makingmiracles · 08/08/2022 00:36

I wouldn’t feel too bad op, especially if it’s not a massive one.
we usually have an intex one goes up around may and down either sept/oct, cover when not in use and cleaned with a net after every use, pool floater with chlorine tablets in, usually filled once for the entire time then emptied before being cleaned and stored but the neighbours kids are abit grimey and not as careful as mine so the last couple of yrs we’ve had to empty and refill it halfway through the summer use to clean it.

im am Agast at the public pool thing….surely nots not true is it??? That it’s not emptied for 5-7 years!?! Why would they not empty and refill it when they have periods of closure eg over Xmas period/new year.
if true, that is truely gross no matter what chemicals and has put me off public swimming more than I already was(too many incidences off hair, plasters etc in the water) 🤮 I’d love to hear from someone who actually works in a leisure centre to either confirm or deny it??
i know the lidos near us empty theirs at the end of each season(so once every year)

The reservoirs near me are less than half full, you can see the remains of the villages they flooded when they built it. We aren't on a hosepipe ban yet but I don't think it will be long.

Going back to leaks, there is one on the next road to us that has been running for nearly 2 weeks now, I dread to think how much water is being lost, it is pouring out. It has been reported nearly every day from what I have seen in the WhatsApp group for the area.

It is true.

They don't empty and refill it over Christmas because a) most places only shut for a day or two and it would take about a week to drain, clean and refill a huge pool, and b) it would mean paying people to come in and work on those days.

There's also no real need to clean it more often - the technology used to clean public pools is much more complicated than just chucking some tablets in like you would a paddling pool at home.

If things are that dire, why are businesses still allowed to operate and use water as normal?

There are lots of exemptions. There are also some restrictions on non-domestic use. It’s not an all-or-nothing thing. I can’t even begin to imagine the demand put on the water supply in the summer with everyone watering their gardens with hoses and the popularity of ever increasing paddling pools which are refilled every few days. Two things which are largely unnecessary. Business who rely on water use is quite clearly more important. I know this is human nature but the whining about “why is she doing that and I can’t, it’s not fair!” is very juvenile.

Do you really want food businesses to stop producing food etc. Grow up.

Don't feel guilty.
Our children deserve to stay cool in this heat. We don't all live by the seaside.

We use the water in our paddling pool to water the plants and base of our fruit trees with buckets when we take it down and then spread it out over the lawn so more of the tree roots get it as well.

how santimonious. How entitled. How ignorant...
.'our children deserve to stay cool'

Harridan1981 · 08/08/2022 07:25

We're hardly in Death Valley, your kids can keep cool without a pool in the garden

I'm wondering if the same people will be going to different counties or countries like Wales or Scotland for water if they run out. I think those who wasted it should go to the back of the line frankly, they can eat their grass and get some level of water from that and their pools. 😂 They will whine loudly though like you say, very greedy selfish people who are clearly bad parents.

Sartre · 08/08/2022 07:47

Go for it, you bloody pay for it and if your bill is anything like ours it’s astronomical.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/08/2022 07:49

I think a paddling pool in the garden comes under “essential” in this weather in the summer hols.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 07:51

depends on the size of your paddling pool
use the water for the garden afterwards

It really doesn’t. People without gardens, paddling pools, or hoses all seem to manage. Essential = water to drink, cook, manage basic hygiene. Not “occupy the kids for a bit”.
