Strawberries are lovely, strawberry flavoured things are not.

Actual strawberries are delicious.

Strawberry jam, jelly, yoghurt, ice cream, sauce... are all horrible. Raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry etc. versions are better.

I agree. Same with coffee. Coffee is nice. Coffee flavoured things are horrible

Sorry, you have that the wrong way round

Coffee flavoured things are nice. Coffee is the devil's saliva.

Getoff · 08/08/2022 11:26

Me experience is that actual strawberries have a greater than 50% chance of being horrible. It's the most disappointing fruit among all those commonly eaten.

I have had good strawberries in Waitrose, but buy what appears to be exactly the same product a week later, and horrible again.

Getoff · 08/08/2022 11:27

Nothing wrong with Strawberry jam, as jams go. And it's less likely to disappoint than actual strawberries.

locketrocket · 08/08/2022 11:33

Haribo strawbs don't count, do they?

Agree with bananas
Bananas - lovely
Banana flavour - 🤢

Apparently banana flavouring tastes nothing like real bananas because when it was invented bananas were different and now we're stuck with it.

(Have had wine & can't be bothered to Google, but it's scientific)

This was also my true belief until about 2 minutes ago, I did Google it quickly as I was about to post and learned that it's a myth!!

It's actually that the flavour compound that is used to recreate banana flavouring is only one of many compounds in actual bananas, so it's not a very faithful recreation and also it's the flavour that people might find unpleasant in real bananas (e.g. reminiscent of rot)

The compound is a bit stronger in the variety of banana that was predominant up to the 50s which is maybe where the myth came from, but it's irrelevant because the flavour compound is produced in a lab anyway

Wrong, blueberries are the most disappointing, with at least a 79% failure rate

Mardyface · 08/08/2022 11:48

I love artificial cherry flavour. But I don't really connect it with actual cherries, which are delicious but entirely different.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow mentioning pripsen at any time is a low blow. I had forgotten about it until then.

according to the article I posted this is actually also true of strawberry, pineapple, cherry, raspberry and watermelon artificial flavours - all of which have been derided on this thread. Maybe this explains everything!!

dont like strawberry drinks but love strawberrys.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 09/08/2022 10:03

Agreed. Same with orange flavour. I remember orange Calpol when I was a child. I only took it once, never again.

Airfriedpotatowitch · 09/08/2022 10:10

Yes strawberry jam is OK cos its real strawberry, strawberry flavour reminds me of being sick as a child, banana flavour also gross in fact most fake flavours are gross tbh especially fake cherry although cherry drops are nice I like those

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 09/08/2022 10:11

I dunno, I really love those chewy strawberry sweets, the large flat ones. Oh and the foam banana sweets. But they don't taste exactly like the fruit no, but they do taste good.

Opposite with tomatoes though. I can't eat raw tomato, it comes straight back out. But tomato soup, ketchup, tomato based sauces etc, all fine.

mycatisannoying · 09/08/2022 10:12

Disagree! They're the most overrated fruit. I prefer the flavour.
