Strawberries are lovely, strawberry flavoured things are not.

Actual strawberries are delicious.

Strawberry jam, jelly, yoghurt, ice cream, sauce... are all horrible. Raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry etc. versions are better.

AIBU?

This is cherries and bananas for me.
Strawberry jam (and ice cream sauce) is delicious

I6344 · 07/08/2022 07:37

Yes! Love strawberries but strawberry flavour things are gross. Same with coffee, banana, pistachio etc

I6344 · 07/08/2022 07:38

I meant yes as in I agree, not yes as in YABU. Sorry, not enough coffee running through my veins yet 😂 YADNBU!

Lemonyfuckit · 07/08/2022 07:44

Controversially, maybe, I feel this way about cherries.

Paq · 07/08/2022 07:46

I think this is my most successful AIBU ever.

I'd forgotten about strawberry milkshakes 🤢

Interesting about other flavours. Personally I like chocolate and coffee flavoured things, am neutral about bananas (don't really like the real thing or banana flavoured stuff) and never choose cherry flavoured stuff so don't have enough experience to comment.

YABU regarding strawberries.

Yes to the banana thing though. I actually looked into the reason why banana flavour stuff tastes nothing like real bananas and it's apparently because banana flavouring was based off of the most common banana at the time, which has since died out and the bananas we have today taste completely different. Some people say it's a complete myth but who knows really. Another theory is that they created banana flavouring before bananas became popular.

Why would they not change the banana flavouring recipe though?

SD1978 · 07/08/2022 07:58

Bananas! Anything banana flavoured is nasty!

germsandcoffee · 07/08/2022 08:00

Peaches are lovely but anything peach flavoured is revolving (peach yogurt being the worse 🤮)

onlythreenow · 07/08/2022 08:30

I love strawberry flavoured things, and often find them nicer than actual strawberries, which (to me) need lots of icing sugar to be nice.

handbagsandholidays · 07/08/2022 08:34

YANbU! Flavoured and scented are sickly sweet! X

MouseShoes · 07/08/2022 08:35

For me it’s chocolate. Love chocolate but can’t stand chocolate flavour. Doesn’t matter if it’s cake, milkshake or whatever, it’s just awful.

saveforthat · 07/08/2022 08:46

I think all artificial flavours are a poor copy of the real thing. I agree that most strawberry flavoured food is awful. Anyone putting sugar on strawberries is buying the wrong ones or imported ones. Cheddar strawberries in season are divine. Obviously going against the grain but I love coffee cake and coffee cream chocolates. I think it's easier to reproduce coffee than fruit flavours.

StressyMcStressFace · 07/08/2022 08:50

May I add pineapple to the list of delicious fruit but disgusting as a flavour? Ever eaten a pineapple flavoued sweet that doesn't taste like vomit anybody?

Totally agree with all of th above flavours being disgusting too Envy (not envy)

Difford · 07/08/2022 08:52

Apples - delicious and refreshing

Apple flavoured things - taste like wee

larkstar · 07/08/2022 08:57

I don't like artificial strawberry flavour but I don't have to eat it that often. I have a strawberry patch on my garden only 2m X 3m do I make jam, conserve and ice cream from that. The conserve is one of the better things I make - the strawberries are almost chewy - a far more intense flavour than the jam or fresh fruit. I do a lot of foraging for wild fruit as I walk the dog for nearly 2hrs most days so I know where to find damsons (that hands down makes the best jam IMHO), bullace (which few people have heard of - it's a tangier, smaller fruit than a damson but not as bitter as the sloe) and a lot of blackberries - I use a sieve meant to purée vegetables to get all the seeds out - that makes a jelly that is the most intense fruit flavour of anything I make. We eat all these sweet things with Greek yogurt or I put them in ice cream. I'm actually not that mad about fresh strawberries TBH.

dottiedodah · 07/08/2022 08:59

Yanbu raspberry jelly is great .strawberry less so . Like raspberries best anyway.although 🍓 are nice but a little sweet

Hidingawaytoday · 07/08/2022 09:02

Disagree about strawberries, but I have the same aversion to almond flavour things. Love almonds, hate almond flavoured things marzipan and amaretto.

oviraptor21 · 07/08/2022 09:02

Blowyourowntrumpet · 06/08/2022 22:24

I agree. Same with coffee. Coffee is nice. Coffee flavoured things are horrible

The opposite. Coffee is vile but coffee flavour things are usually lovely.

Agree with OP - strawberries are nice but strawberry flavour is not with ice cream being the worst offender.

georgarina · 07/08/2022 09:04

Disagree about strawberry flavour

Artificial cherry on the other hand is gag inducing

TruffleShuffles · 07/08/2022 09:08

I’d add watermelon to the list, watermelon is lovely and refreshing. Watermelon flavoured things are disgusting, they don’t even slightly taste like watermelon.

OldTinHat · 07/08/2022 09:13

YABVVVVU! Strawberries are just delicious. So is strawberry sorbet, ice cream, jam, yogurt...😋

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 07/08/2022 09:15

Agree, although would make an exception for strawberry jam (which isn't actually flavoured is it? It's just concentrated strawberries and sugar)

I'd also agree chocolate and coffee but for me, bananas are the reverse - am fairly indifferent in their natural form but am quite partial to banana flavour!

Crochetandcoke · 07/08/2022 09:22

YANBU

I only have one child who likes strawberry flavoured things, and he doesn't like strawberries 😂

Crochetandcoke · 07/08/2022 09:24

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

Ooh good point. Strawberry jam can be rather yummy 🤤

JudgeJ · 08/08/2022 11:17

Americano75 · 06/08/2022 22:26

Ditto bananas.

This with knobs on, how anyone can even look at banoffee pie is beyond me! Almonds too, I love almonds raw or cooked whole but almond flavoured things like marzipan revolt me.
Odd how raspberry, blackcurrant flavours are great, looking at you Ronaldos of Sheringham, but not strawberry, the taste seems to change.
