AIBU?

to think professional jobs are a bit of a joke

dontgetmewrongiloveit · 05/08/2022 21:39

Knocked off at lunchtime today. Probably did 20-30h of work this week. Don't think my manager/clients cared. Sometimes I just log off and go lie in the park in the sunshine for a few hours

I make about 120k a year

I have professional qualifications which took a bit of effort to get but not talking medicine or anything like that

AIBU to think this is a bit of a joke

I do the same for about £80K. It's blissful most of the time but I do feel like I'm wasting my talents

This is a tad like my new role, I have a degree, working towards a computing and analytics masters, 6 years work experience prior and the hours are paid at 37.5 a week but 35 working, only work in work twice a week where I just get cracked on, the other 3 days are mostly online meetings or reading documents, most days as long as I'm online by around 8.30 I finish up around 3.30 or much earlier on Fridays if there isn't enough work to take on as I'm only training to be a specialist of my role. I'm also on just under 32k and will get a wage increase at the end of the training as well as out of hours support pay which averages one additional day a month with my colleagues worth nearly 3.5k extra a year on the double pay. Most of my senior colleagues just do the role I typically do currently but at a slightly more advanced level or a few more meetings, but we still finish and start at the same times near enough and get free food and drink with the role aswell.

And yes I expected different to the laid back reality of my company and role, previously I worked in public sector and colleagues were always in unpleasant moods, lower pay, greater restrictions, less independence on managing workload, my new role in the private sector is completely the opposite, I even get around 34 holidays a year with Christmas off and potential bonuses!

Must agree. Was working with a group of young tech types today, and they said all they do is read documents as their job. Seems pointless, to me...
DH works with a similar cohort & says they only ever come to the office if there’s a party / some sort of freebies on the go. Or for the work restaurant.
They’re on huge salaries, with plenty of perks. Fair play to them, but DH says they’re spoilt & the money doesn’t match the work. Saw it for myself today, gotta say!

I don't get it, how do you and the OP on £120k contribute to society giving so little effort? You sound blasé/uncaring, self satisfied.
What benefit to the world/country does your existence bring when with a little effort you could probably bring joy to many of those worse off?
How can you value yourself when you effortlessly contribute so little.

My job is very similar, but I’m only on 65k. I spend a lot of time in my garden.

I think the main takeaway is that most people, on this salary, wouldn’t post about it so dismissively. They would “justify” their worth - if they needed to post in the first place.

Either this poster is fabricating for a reaction or they are so tone deaf that you should be thankful that they’re not in your life.

Even if every single word were true - what kind of a person does that make you to want to post it?

I have nothing against high earners at all - and I hate some of the vitriol directed towards them on some threads.

I think what makes me feel sad with this post is the clear lack of pride or work ethic. It’s basically IDGAF but I’ll take the money. Oh, and I’ll post it on here just to reiterate the fact.

But where's your professional pride? Don't you feel embarrassed at doing so little?
I earn a fraction of this but have a good work ethic.

Why should anyone be embarrassed? If someone said to me you can have 120k a year and barely do anything I'd bite their arm off. I'd not be refusing on the basis of my professional pride.

@Roady1

i know, that is where many people go wrong. They simply work too hard and burn out.

I am not embarrassed either. If someone wants to pay me that much to work not very much then yes please!!

I hardly think the OP is embarrassed.

You might (clearly) think she should be, but I’m sure she’s not.

Most people would happily take a £120 salary in return for doing very little.

You must know that the majority of professional jobs aren't like yours?

I've only known/been in professional jobs with a lot of stress and long hours, 20+ years of it. Are you in a lazy industry?

Tell me you’re a lawyer without telling me you’re a lawyer….

Tell me you don't know many lawyers without telling me you don't know many lawyers.

There might be a few in house lawyers living the OP's lifestyle but the vast majority of lawyers earn their income minute by minute (high or (for the majority) low) in billable seconds or on flat rate case fees. That's one of the reasons why I'm not a lawyer.

In finance there's a lot of people earning low six figures. Of that group I'd say that there's some working pretty full-on ten hour plus days with a lot of stress, some with a very low workload but well-paid for their specialist expertise, some who've ended up in well-paid dead-end non-jobs and some who are frankly taking the piss. Even in the same company you'll see a wide range of workloads on different roles.

I work for a non profit (we’re funded by grants and subs, not donations - calm yourselves). I’m at Director level, in my 30’s at haven’t done more than 20 hours of actual work a week in several years. I earn just over £70K a year.

I have lots of degrees and worked very bloody hard to get to this position. But now, I just…coast? I occasionally have an idea and a bunch of people make it happen, and that’s apparently worth it for them. But, seriously, it’s a joke.

Funded by grants like those awarded by local councils that come from taxpayer's money do you mean?

People who ACTUALLY earn high figure salaries don’t tend to feel the need to go to an anonymous Internet forum and humble brag about it, like the OP and many responses.
The people who ‘humble brag’ tend to be fabricating a life they wish they had

Just going to leave that comment here

If you are good with it and no one else is bothered just go with it. It may not last but use the downtime to keep your cv updated.
