to think professional jobs are a bit of a joke

Knocked off at lunchtime today. Probably did 20-30h of work this week. Don't think my manager/clients cared. Sometimes I just log off and go lie in the park in the sunshine for a few hours

I make about 120k a year

I have professional qualifications which took a bit of effort to get but not talking medicine or anything like that

AIBU to think this is a bit of a joke

@toogoodforthisworld What industry do you work in? Do you have a highly specialised skill? I’m in similar position to OP albeit as a contractor… Which is fine for me as I can float above the office politics but feel valued for my skill.

My skills didn’t stand out in my previous industry, where there were more of ‘me’, everyone was equally or more clever but now I’m sort of the only one who does what I do so I stand out (though I still don’t understand the industry and have little interest in it apart from it being lucrative).

DarkShade · 06/08/2022 00:14

I'm the same guys, I earn one billion a year and I sit at home all day watching Netflix, occasionally by the pool. I think anyone who actually works for a living is a total fool who just didn't try hard enough at school.

PieRSquared · 06/08/2022 00:15

I am highly qualified, working in a “professional job”, highly technical and detailed work, I’m not paid as well as you. I find myself very stressed in work, trying to catch up at weekends, we have a stacked ranking system that has pros but a lot of cons. Sometimes I love and enjoy my work, but it’s often a slog, but never a joke.

HarryPotterDucks · 06/08/2022 00:19

Lies

sweetnoodle · 06/08/2022 00:19

I think this post is a joke

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 06/08/2022 00:21

You sound fab! 🍾and so does your job! Are you a barrister by any chance😂?

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 06/08/2022 00:22

or a teacher????????????????😜

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 06/08/2022 00:25

What about transforming people's lives? Your post is a wonderful indictment of the cash cow approach to the charity sector. Maybe you should have a lie down in the park, you might find some inspiration there!!🤑

lovethehighlands · 06/08/2022 00:30

you wont be laughing when someone sees you tanning yourself in the park or catches you out.

no one will hire a skiver.

There is nobody to ‘catch’ me and literally nothing would happen if they did. I can go lie in the park anytime I want. The idea that everyone works 9 to 5 (or other set hours), needs to be ‘at their post’ and has someone who can ‘catch them out’ simply isn’t a lot of people’s reality anymore. That is not the nature of much of output focussed employment.

mycatisannoying · 06/08/2022 00:43

But where's your professional pride? Don't you feel embarrassed at doing so little?
I earn a fraction of this but have a good work ethic.

are you just a tad envious?

blueshoes · 06/08/2022 00:48

A lot of senior roles are such because they are paid to get the job done, what Cher calls 'output focused' employment. The buck also stops with them. 9-5 is a bit of a luxury because they don't get to switch off. But they can also bugger off from time to time because there are more junior people and middle management holding the fort.

Not sure whether OP is in that kind of job. I suspect not. It sounds more like OP is paid for her expertise. If no one needs her expertise, she is idle. Great, but such jobs often go to contractors because a company who is smart won't pay full time for someone whose expertise they only need to call on part time.

Of course I don't know what the OP does and she is not telling anyway.

WonderingWanda · 05/08/2022 23:28

I have professional qualifications to be a teacher. I often think it's joke but for very different reasons. Fancy a job swap op?

I'm intrigued, why it's joke?

Cherchezlaspice · 06/08/2022 00:53

@blueshoes Precisely this, but articulated much better than I did.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 06/08/2022 00:54

Dalaidramailama

Whoops! That was a response to your post🙄, not the OP

TheWayoftheLeaf · 06/08/2022 00:59

Good for you.

I spent £65,000 getting qualified and spent two years as an apprentice. I work every second of my hours and over. I work through lunchtimes.

I earn £32,000 a year and haven't had a bonus since 2018.

Lulibee · 06/08/2022 01:00

My son works in reinsurance and earns £300k, he’s only 30. He could do the same as you but he puts in long hours as he wants to be promoted again and get maximum bonus. I’m guessing you won’t get promoted any time soon. If you’re not building your experience and reputation then you’ll start to see people promoted over you. Of corse, that might be your choice. He has people on his team like you who the company are trying to manage out. Be careful

Algbu6 · 06/08/2022 01:07

inthehistoryoftheworld · 05/08/2022 23:22

My DH is the same, OP, no qualifications above mediocre A levels. Same salary as you, wfh, spent half of this week doing DIY and cleaning the bathrooms.

I'm Master's educated and work in a helping professional. I'd die of boredom if I did his job and he'd run screaming from mine.

It takes all sorts to make a world.

So true

Algbu6 · 06/08/2022 01:09

Wheresmymoneytree · 05/08/2022 23:15

You would think earning 120k you would have a house with a garden rather than having to sunbathe in the park

Sour grapes 🍇

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/08/2022 01:18

🙄

Sour grapes 🍇

Not unreasonably so.

There’s nothing like a bit of stealth bragging about a massive salary vs lack of effort to earn it to set a cat amongst the pigeons.

Particularly during an unprecedented cost of living crisis.

I do reserve a huge amount of sympathy for the entirely serious and socially aware op though - imagine the hardship they go through everyday!

NotRainingToday · 06/08/2022 01:42

I have a professional job responsible for discovering new cancer drugs. I take it seriously, work hard every week and don't piss around.

My job is definitely not 'a joke'.
OP, I'm not sure what it is you're proud of here.

Furries · 06/08/2022 02:02

Not sure re professional jobs. On the other hand, some OPs …

WhimsicalGubbins · 06/08/2022 02:05

Aaah, look at the terrible attempt at the humble brag post…

You don’t even seem to have thought it through enough to have a valid point
