AIBU to be feeling bleak about bills?

Quarterly electricity bill arrived… am actually in tears. Could people possibly share what they’re paying at the moment, just for some sort of anxiety relief that we are all in this together?

AIBU to let it get me down so much? I can’t sleep through worry.

I just fixed at £230 for dual fuel, until Oct 2023. Usually I pay when the bill arrives but the increase in October (and then every three months) worries me.

These prices aren't going to go down any time soon but I wonder will Ofgem just keep raising the price cap every three months?

bur mine is usually 12/14 without hot tub

I think 12/14 is as high as 4 is low usage. It is well above national averages.

I have all the normal appliances and use 7-8 but I just try to be mindful. Switches off when not in use. Washing every other day on lowest energy setting. I choose not to tumble dry. Etc.

I know @Wishyfishy but I don’t know what is causing it to be so high :(

minus hot tub as that only out 3/4mths tops

I don’t have a tumble dryer

dw on once a day. Think it’s 1kw

washing machine 3 times a week

sure it’s the bloody fish tank 😂

We're currently paying £100 a month for a 4 bedroom house. Not wanting to be goady, but I'm amazed at the range of the prices that people are paying in comparison. Are you stuck on particularly expensive tariffs or something?

Same here. We’re actually paying about 25% less than last year. Three of us in a five bed house. Combined is under £100 a month.

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 17:31

I don't think it is unless you have one big enough for a whale😁

I would try to use that meter thingy for sockets so you can identify where the problem is.

DixonD · 08/08/2022 17:35

Just to add, our payment went down considerably after submitting a meter reading. Perhaps this should be done monthly rather than just letting the energy company decide what you might use.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2022 17:37

I’ve just been looking at my bills the past few years

end Of 2018 I was paying £2.50 for gas - it’s now £6.97 per kw

end of 2018 elec was 12p , 2019 13.31 - 2020 15.71 - 2021 20p and now 2022 28p

let alone standing charge

Do you have a link for it please

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 17:47

@Blondeshavemorefun I don't have one (very low usage so no need) but someone here might recommend one if these. Lots of people have some

@DdraigGoch dont you have a fridge freezer microwave dishwasher WiFi phones or lights plugged in as basics

or are you saying this all run at low cost

I have all these plus fish tank , robot hoover . Laptop and printer plugged in and fans x 2 when hot

summer months hot tub which I know uses 3 ish a day

bur mine is usually 12/14 without hot tub

I'm on a similar electric usage to @DdraigGoch - I've a fridge freezer and a microwave, no dishwasher, and no wifi/laptop (I use my phone and its data package). I tend to listen to the radio instead of watching TV. My heating/water/oven are gas.
I use my washing machine once a week, and rarely use the tumble dryer.
Everything does get switched off at the plug when not in use, except the fridge.
I do live alone, mind.

Thank you @Bubblebubblebah

so I plug in and it tells me how much it costs per day ?

Bubblebubblebah · 08/08/2022 21:12

I belive most have cost function where you put your price per unit and it shows you details. I don't think I saw one without it just with usage.

I just spotted there is Tapo smart one. I have smart plugs from that company and they are great so maybe this one is too.

Most of those things you've listed hardly use any power. The big users are appliances that heat things up. Hence the oven and washing machine. I don't have a dishwasher or tumble drier otherwise they'd be on the list too.

Microwaves are only on for such a short space of time that it would only use about 0.03kWh to heat my morning porridge.

The fridge-freezer does use a moderate amount of power but it's a small under counter one so it's not too bad. Looking at the specs on Currys' website it should use about 0.5kWh/day. I actually left the freezer door open the other night by accident without a noticeable spike in consumption.
