AIBU to be feeling bleak about bills?

Quarterly electricity bill arrived… am actually in tears. Could people possibly share what they’re paying at the moment, just for some sort of anxiety relief that we are all in this together?

AIBU to let it get me down so much? I can’t sleep through worry.

OP posts:
Sexismdoesntrule · 04/08/2022 19:47

I don’t understand some of these bills either.

family of 4
tumble dryer on every day at least 1hr
washing machine on every day
2 baths every day
1 shower
hoover on every day at least once
silent night enormous fan on every night

were at £100/m electricity and gas.

Nothappyatwork · 04/08/2022 19:47

Im paying £90 a month for gas and electric on a three bed, 50% of which standing charges.

With Bulb so stuck due to their financial mismanagement 🙄

MamaWingsIt · 04/08/2022 19:48

Family of 4, soon to be 5!

We pay £140 per month, we have approx £500 credit to play with for the winter.

Becky6758 · 04/08/2022 19:49

£85 electric a month.
£35 gas

Pedallleur · 04/08/2022 19:50

StrawberryPot · 04/08/2022 18:48

Dual fuel with British Gas

Pre fuel hike - about £140 pcm
Currently - £270 pcm
Today's fixed offer - over £400 pcm (a few quid shy of £5k pa fixed to Oct 2024)

😱

Not dissimilar to me. Last year just over 2k, BG offering £4300 to fix thro 2023. Standing charges about 80p per day.

Blossomtoes · 04/08/2022 19:50

We fixed at £240 a month at the end of last year. That’s currently building a fair cushion of credit for the winter.

AlwaysLatte · 04/08/2022 19:51

Around £360 a month. It didn't help recently that one of our boys left their powerful fan on while we were on holiday last week!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/08/2022 19:54

JulyDreams · 04/08/2022 19:55

£152 for 2 of us in a 2 bed terrace! Depressing totally agree.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/08/2022 19:59

PseudonymPolly · 04/08/2022 19:39

Some people on other similar threads have been saying they use very very low amounts of electricity. Some people were saying less than 5kwh a day

Just checked ours and we're on 14kwh so far today. Just an average day...washing machine on once, oven on for half an hour then standard tv/chargers etc.

Sounds like us

not sure why use so much

Diamondsareforever123 · 04/08/2022 20:00

I honestly don't understand the differences in energy costs here. I have a tiny 1 bed flat. 4 radiators. Gas CH. Combined bill has gone up from £75 to £125. This will obviously increase. I'm a pensioner but get no benefits as I am just over the threshold.... but I won't have the money to pay anymore increases for energy. I literally am at my wit's end. I won't be able to afford heating in the winter. I think the government in the UK wants to kill us off.

Are you paying estimate or giving readings?

HelloAllll · 04/08/2022 20:05

925XX · 04/08/2022 17:41

I honestly have not found the increase anywhere near as bad I as anticipated. I would normally pay around £110 a month and this time it was £124. I have tried to be economical with usage but not to any great extent. There is always 2 television on for most of the day, we have 2 freezers and 2 fridges constantly running of course, 2 hair dryers and 2 computers never off.

This is like us. Since the price cap has increased we have varied between £80 and £110 yet we have 2 people wfh full time and electicals including 2 computers running all day. Short of being concious to turn lighta off when leaving the room, we haven't made any other changes. And yes we are not in a deal and pay the energy cap amount. I genuinely wonder how some people manage to rack up such a bill

NameChangeLifeChange · 04/08/2022 20:05

YANBU to feel bleak OP and sending lots of love. It’s a really difficult time, things are going to get tight and it’s miserable. I’m trying to be positive and focus on my lovely kids and the things we have but find myself preoccupied with worries regularly. We have a big mortgage and big childcare costs which we can’t reduce so it’s scary.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 04/08/2022 20:07

YANBU. Apparently some people are paying more for the standing charge than they actually are for what they use in some cases. It’s totally disgusting that the Government and Ofgem are sitting back and allowing energy companies to get away with this. The thing I take comfort from is the fact that there is no way on earth the Tories will get in act the next election and hopefully things the new Labour government will take effective action to redress the balance. I’m talking renationalisation if utility companies, high windfall taxes on companies that profiteer at the expense of consumers. Measures to make sure that big corporations cannot get out of paying their taxes etc.

Boxachocs · 04/08/2022 20:15

We used £85 electricity and £26 gas last month including standing charge. Direct debit is around £180.
Family of 4 in a detached new build.

H3ll00 · 04/08/2022 20:17

Our latest statement for a large 4 double bedroom house is £193.00 per month.

There’s usually at least 1 person working from home each day. At my dismay, when left alone, my husband would rather put the tumble drier on than peg the washing out. Plus, I like to have a bath twice a day. I’m pleasantly surprised by the prediction.

We’re with Shell.

HairyKitty · 04/08/2022 20:20

I don’t understand how some of these bills are so
low. We are 5 people, 4 always home in a terrace, trying really hard to keep usage low, no tumble drier.
currently £160 a month but this doesn’t include the April rise

stopringingme · 04/08/2022 20:31

Electricity (eon) just gone up from £53 per month to £83, we have actually used less in the last year.

Gas (flogas) went down from £40 to £21 per month, we have credit on the gas and usually have credit on electricity at the end of the year.

3 bed detached house, 3 living here.

Southwest12 · 04/08/2022 20:34

I put my direct debit up from £80 to £100 to build up some extra credit. My current fix ends at the end of the month and the estimated direct debit on the standard variable is £128.

I've got a smart meter, there's only me but in a 4 bed house. Out at work Monday to Friday. Currently using £32 a month gas and electric combined. 2.5kwh electric for Monday and 2.4kwh gas according to the energy hub on the website.

The heating went off at the beginning of April, it's set to come on only if it drops below 16. In winter it comes on morning and evening if it drops below 18. If I turn it "up" that means to 20 max. I got smart plugs for the TV and the lights, so the TV is never on standby. And I've hardly turned the oven on since I got an air fryer. So that cuts the usage down loads.

Sorry, but using tumble dryer when you could peg washing out and having two baths a day is just wasteful. Never mind the money, it’s bad for the bloody planet.

Bubblebubblebah · 04/08/2022 20:57

I just had a look and we paid and used more in a flat before so I think age of appliances can make a difference
