AIBU to be feeling bleak about bills?

Quarterly electricity bill arrived… am actually in tears. Could people possibly share what they’re paying at the moment, just for some sort of anxiety relief that we are all in this together?

AIBU to let it get me down so much? I can’t sleep through worry.

We are in a 3 bed semi, DD went from £75 a month for gas and electric to £155. The estimated usage shows we will be almost £600 in credit over the summer and around £400 in debt to the energy company by March next year if we keep paying £155 a month. I despair. Our nursery bill is over £1,000 a month, as is our mortgage. I am having to find £2,500 a month before we even pay council tax, the gas/electric bill or eat. My parents live the life of Riley and whilst I know I am not entitled to any of it, tonight I am in tears after their latest brag about their new car.

Dual fuel with British Gas

Pre fuel hike - about £140 pcm
Currently - £270 pcm
Today's fixed offer - over £400 pcm (a few quid shy of £5k pa fixed to Oct 2024)

😱

How is this possible? Is this on meter readings?

Yes metre readings. We're on a tariff we were forcibly moved to after our old company collapsed, so not like it's particularly cheap or anything.
You can see why I'm wondering how on earth some people pay so much!

kerkyra · 04/08/2022 18:59

A year ago I payed £90 for gas and electricity,in March they put it up to 130 and I got an email in July saying direct debit will be 182 from August.
Just myself and a teen in a Victorian terrace, showering every other day and getting panicky.

How is this possible? Is this on meter readings?

We are the same.
4-bed newbuild and as we have only been in since Feb our supplier (Eon) had been using estimated bills (despite us having a smart meter) so for the past 3-months I have been submitting readings manually for GW&E on the 1st of the month.
Our DD is £120pm but based on my readings the actual cost pm (Inc the infamous standing charge) is about £75.

Of course it goes without saying that the heating isn't on and the TD is only required occasionally as most things are line dried.

How can a company be owed money AND be in profit at the same time?

Lemonblossom · 04/08/2022 19:11

I genuinely don’t understand how anyone can only use 4kwh a day.

Metalandtea · 04/08/2022 19:14

I am too surprised how much some are paying. We have been paying about £110 combined for electricity and gas for a family of 4 in a detached house. We work from home so are in all day. Very careful to turn everything off at the wall when not in use. Overpaying considerably in preparation for winter.

littlepeas · 04/08/2022 19:14

Ours is £272 per month for gas and electricity - modern, well insulated, mid terrace town house (5 beds, 5 human inhabitants).

Bubblebubblebah · 04/08/2022 19:18

No tumble dryer, only about 2 wash loads a week, very rarely used oven (prefer hob or other equipment and bbq), hairdryer just like once a month because I am prone to breaking hair if I use it all the time. But there is permanently at least one laptop in, monitor and some other equipment, dishwasher every 2 days, lots of coffee so kettle boiling, microwave use (great to cook potatoes, innit), tv on in the evenings...
Nothing depriving tbh. I was surprised how little my american size fridge eats.

Bubblebubblebah · 04/08/2022 19:19

Sorry that was supposed to quote @Lemonblossom

My wuotes don't work?

We used 55kwh in 33 days last month. So can be done. 2 adults.

RaininSummer · 04/08/2022 19:20

I am still only paying 80 a month for a biggish house with 2 occupants. Read the meter every month when I remember. Must be on a fix still and am anticipating a rise.

Sprogonthetyne · 04/08/2022 19:21

Mines gone from £65 to £110 /month. Though it's estimated, so I'm hoping I've saved up a little credit.

Lottie4 · 04/08/2022 19:32

Our electricity for last month is £46.22, it was £34.56 July last year. Joint gas and electricity this month £60. Mainly just the two of us, DD home from uni sometimes. So glad we somehow keep ours down, as I'd be worried sick if we were paying the amounts some have to pay. We're pretty careful though, no hairdryers, tumble dryer, dishwasher. Lights and tv off if not actively needed

Itstime1 · 04/08/2022 19:35

Electric is about £130pm at the moment
gas is unknown (I can work it out but don’t have time at the moment).
I ignored ML advice and re fixed my tarrif in Jan. paid slightly more until March but 10000% worth it with the new baby. I’m aware not everyone is as lucky though.

our DD is £250 pm by choice as we have a 4 month old and DH works from home. 4 bed semi and washing machine or steriliser constantly on thanks to the baba. We usually spend between 4-8£ a day according to our smart meter app thing (Air con means it can reach £8) but comes to around £130 average a month. We get billed every 6 months though so are currently in credit by a lot, will probably have to top it up a little bit though.

PseudonymPolly · 04/08/2022 19:39

Some people on other similar threads have been saying they use very very low amounts of electricity. Some people were saying less than 5kwh a day

Just checked ours and we're on 14kwh so far today. Just an average day...washing machine on once, oven on for half an hour then standard tv/chargers etc.

EtnaVesuvius · 04/08/2022 19:40

We currently use about £52 of electricity a month. 4 bed house, 4 people. We don’t game or watch loads of tv and I do turn things off, but I’m not crazy about it.

I’m also baffled at the range of bills on this thread!

EtnaVesuvius · 04/08/2022 19:44

Just checked and we’ve used just under 4kwh today so far (4 of us). Washing machine has been on and the TV for a bit; a couple of people have charged their phones.

I don’t know what else there is??!

Threeboysandadog · 04/08/2022 19:44

£338 duel fuel, on a fix until March. 4 bed detached with 4 adults and a 16 year old. Three of us are at home all day.

Bubblebubblebah · 04/08/2022 19:44

Maybe new vs old white goods make a difference?
From specs my washing machine uses about 1.5 per cycle. Don't know the oven but I think it's similar ler hour.

HairyKitty · 04/08/2022 19:45

I’m not sure how you are billed but when you say you get a quarterly bill that makes me to see if you’re not on the best plan?
if you are billed at the end of the quarter for what you have used then a) your internet rate is probably higher than if you paid by monthly direct debit and b) your outgoings will be unpredictable as you could pay double or triple come winter when usage is higher.

If it helps I’ve managed to trim almost a third off gas and elec usage over the past year. My bills still a little higher than it was but cutting back carefully has offset some of that.

Im due another big price rise in 6 months when my fixed tariff ends so I’m now deliberately overpaying by £50 a month so that this can offset some of my next price rise.

HairyKitty · 04/08/2022 19:45

4kwh for a day is amazing, my house runs at this level when we are on holiday and noones home even if I switch almost everything off!

You don’t have to change the DD just because they say so - check your usage.

Tiggy321 · 04/08/2022 19:47

Wow, wish I lived in Uk. We pay DD of eur580 a month !!! It's not sustainable at all. Hoping we have a winter credit due otherwise it's going to be a chilly one:(
