What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

A consultant obstetrician I used to know did not believe my chickens could lay eggs because I didn’t have a cockeral. He was adamant that a cockerel was necessary. I had to explain it to him in terms of periods

DillonPanthersTexas · 04/08/2022 13:25

Oh, and those weapons grade morons who think that when they see a feather an angel has just visited them.

My husband had a teacher [admittedly many decades ago] who told them that people used to believe lots of unscientific superstitious nonsense, for example they thought the moon influenced the tides.

More recently my daughter did A-level biology with a girl who thought chickens fed baby chicks on milk. Because chicken breasts.
This young woman went on to become a primary school teacher.

The moon does affect the tides! www.bing.com/search?q=moon+affects+the+tides&form=ANNTH1&refig=4c0cffd79ba74b79aef5c0810505402d

That a positive attitude increases the chances you’ll survive cancer.

In reality, attitude is irrelevant. The cancer is being fought in your body by doctors and medicine. Whether you have a sunny optimistic attitude or the opposite has absolutely zero influence on your chances.

Yes, this pisses me off too.

JamTuesday · 04/08/2022 13:27

Oh yes homeopathic medicines, from the kind of people who think Avagadro is a fruit.

That having a different opinion makes you 'phobic'

Yes!! Agree!

crosshatching · 04/08/2022 13:28

A bit like the above, I think the whole 'manifesting' the future you dream of is at best only going to give you a bit of hopeful optimism and at worst will keep people locked in dreamland and not taking practical steps to improve their circumstances.

That having a different opinion makes you 'phobic'

Or an 'ist'.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 04/08/2022 13:29

That the reason palm oil is bad for the orangutans is because it's made from their palms. Although I'm not sure if that was a belief so much as pure idiocy.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 04/08/2022 13:04

Yes, of course I do realise this.
My point is that a teacher thought it was the belief of ignorant people.

Oh I see, my apologies! Flowers

123ROLO · 04/08/2022 13:31

Someone I know and speak to most days is convinced monkey pox has been caused by the vaccine. They are also convinced the majority of the population will be dead in 10 years as the vaccine was a population control measure and a way of weeding out the weak and easy manipulated.

Also ever since the Roe v Wade overturning I've found myself in a morbid curiosity right wing american rabbit hole. Many people who believe women are just a walking uterus, and rape isnt a big deal. People who believe allowing gay or trans teachers is the equivalent to sexually abusing a child, believe that "both sides" of racism need to be taught and believe that for some reason despite mass shootings requiring a gun, that guns having nothing to to do with mass shootings! The mind boggles.

Oh, and those weapons grade morons who think that when they see a feather an angel has just visited them.

I knew man who gave a crow's feather to his ex so that the ex would realize scientology was bogus, because the crow is the Native American bird of wisdom. Unpick that one if you can?

That kier starmer would make a good PM.

I believe that Kier Starmer will make a good pm. Like it or not we are headed for a Labour Government. No one in their right mind will vote Tory after this shower of shit.

Northernsouloldies · 04/08/2022 13:33

Both taxi driver convos, Michelle Obama is a man, I said really, him, I read it on the Internet, me, cos everything on the Internet is true, him, yes it is. Nutter. The snp fanatic who would only buy Scottish eggs, I asked if they had to be from Scottish hens.

That it is possible to change sex and if you don't believe that it is because you're a bigot who hates the victims of that scam

That ghosts/ psychics/ Gods are real.

Ditto homeopathy and all related nonsense.

I came here to say this, but it's already typed out.

Homeopathy is the stupidest thing ever.

Readinstead · 04/08/2022 13:40

My adult dd believed that veins were on one side of the body and arteries on the other and couldn't understand a) how the blood passed from one side to the other and b) how the side with the veins was as healthy as the artery side as it didn't get oxygenated blood. After I explained that the diagram from her biology class was a representation and not what actually happened inside a body she rang some of her friends and 3 out of 4 believed the same. The one that didn't was a medical student.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 04/08/2022 13:41

That voting Tory is a good idea. That Brexit was a good idea. That made up stuff by desert people thousands of years ago is still valid.

Hollahere · 04/08/2022 13:41

That people believe that AIBU is the best place for relationship advice. Totally batshit.

fghj149 · 04/08/2022 13:42

That Boris Johnson faked getting the vaccine in the widely publicised photograph of him getting it. Mental

JamTuesday · 04/08/2022 13:43
