AIBU to be curious about abandoned suitcase across road?

No this is not a clickbait thread. There is a suitcase across the cross from me all day today. I wouldn't have noticed it but that just beside the suitcase (across the pathway), on the path, a bright orange traffic cone is sitting on top of a bollard. I wandered over today as I was annoying my friend with possible explanations and to provide proof that I'm not hallucinating. It's sort of the middle of nowhere in a residential area The suitcase is pushed against the innermost wall of the path and obviously the bollard is on the outermost edge of the path, adjoining the road. I recorded a video of me going to investigate it and it looks empty but secured with a strap and no I did not touch it. There is a faint number written in paper on the handle which is an 8 digit number in two sets of 4 digits. Any guesses? Would you report it? It's directly opposite my home and I'm being pretty sure that I am Victor Meldrew at this point.

I've known two suspicious packages in my time. Both were reported (not by me). One turned out to be an old typewriter that had been flytipped and the other was someone leaving their lunch on the tram. Both caused the shut down of a city centre and massive disruption, but needed to be checked out.

Report it. It's probably nothing but you should still report

And I'm not in the humour of being tortured into a confession.

What town is this in? Up North? I've seen a post today on a local page of a man that went for his train after having a few too many drinks and leaving his luggage, maybe it's his?!

I found a suitcase on my street. Someone going on holiday had jumped into a taxi in a hurry and left it behind. Sometimes there is a simple explanation

Don't open it.

People often discard old suitcases.

If it's worrying you make an anonymous tip off to the police.

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 21:48

Just call 101 and let them deal with it. They get far weirder calls and I doubt anyone will think anything of it 🤷‍♀️

It's not in an airport.

I don't work in an airport but I'm trained to report any suspicious bags! Anywhere public can be a target unfortunately.

And I remember reading about a case a while ago where a bag had been dumped - it was full of indecent photos of kids.

Dalint · 03/08/2022 21:54

Here's a close-up still from the video I recorded earlier.

Why do I have to be the one who reports it and sounds like a fucking lunatic?

Your posts sound much worse than a basic, bog standard report ever could. You are making such a meal out of this. It's just a case. You don't need to be making videos or posting close up stills from them. Just report it or don't.

Ok. I won't.

Does it tick?

I think I'm attaching a photo. The suitcase is behind the very end of the silver railing pushed up against the innermost side of the footpath.

My mind is always suspicious and overactive but that to me looks like it's been led there for someone to collect and the bollard is the indicator of where to look.

BlueG1 · 03/08/2022 22:00

I'd call 101 and report it. Could be stolen property, drugs, a suitcase of confidential papers, anything. But I have lived in places where you immediately report abandoned bags. The police won't think its strange to report it.

starfishmummy · 03/08/2022 22:08

What did the police say?
Start getting bits together in case they decide to evacuate you.

HairyMcLarie · 03/08/2022 22:09

Jesus what a drama. You WILL NOT sound like a lunatic reporting an unattended bag! If you call the police they will ask for details and deal with it. You won't be paraded around the neighbourhood if it's just dumped crap! You live in London ffs! The guidance on reporting unattended bags is quite clear.
I've reported loads of bags including on the underground and they take the details and deal with it. There's plenty of reasons to report it. Lost property, results of a crime or worse case scenario a bomb.
It will take 30 seconds.

Bpdqueen · 03/08/2022 22:16

It's really not a big deal you call 101 tell them where it is and that's the end of it they will deal with the rest. They won't need to speak to you or anything

excelledyourself · 03/08/2022 22:17

What a mental thread

Mochudubh · 03/08/2022 22:21

We had a suitcase dumped at the end of our terrace a few weeks ago. The bomb angle never occurred to me but I did give it a kick, just to check it didn't contain body parts.

I watch far too much Buried in the Backyard.

Dalint · 03/08/2022 21:40

Fly-tipping marked by a bollard?
Maybe somebody reported it and the council marked it with a bollard to be picked up?
I'm trying to sound sane.

The bollard could be entirely co-incidental

Stop making a meal of this and report it

  • to council if you think it's fly-tipping

  • to police if you think it's suspicious, which you seem to do

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 22:22

This is super weird. Takes like two mins to report it Confused

TedMullins · 03/08/2022 22:26

Where in London? I’ll come and open the damn thing!

SomethingAboutNothing · 03/08/2022 22:30

I'm more confused by the fact you posted saying it was a public building not in use at this time of year, but that was all you were prepared to say, then in the next sentence say its a primary school Grin

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 03/08/2022 22:32

Nothing to add except I could tell it was London from the photo. Those are London type railings.
And I needed to comment so I can find the thread again.
Please, please, PLEASE tell us if it's still there in the morning.

Mrs86 · 03/08/2022 22:35

Report it as a Sus package. I'd probably daftly go open it even though you're told not to 🙄😬
