AIBU to be curious about abandoned suitcase across road?

No this is not a clickbait thread. There is a suitcase across the cross from me all day today. I wouldn't have noticed it but that just beside the suitcase (across the pathway), on the path, a bright orange traffic cone is sitting on top of a bollard. I wandered over today as I was annoying my friend with possible explanations and to provide proof that I'm not hallucinating. It's sort of the middle of nowhere in a residential area The suitcase is pushed against the innermost wall of the path and obviously the bollard is on the outermost edge of the path, adjoining the road. I recorded a video of me going to investigate it and it looks empty but secured with a strap and no I did not touch it. There is a faint number written in paper on the handle which is an 8 digit number in two sets of 4 digits. Any guesses? Would you report it? It's directly opposite my home and I'm being pretty sure that I am Victor Meldrew at this point.

I would absolutely be opening it

growinggreyer · 03/08/2022 21:22

Go to fixmystreet.com and report it as flytipping. They will send an email to your council's street team. You can report it anonymously through the site.

Heathrow strategically disposing of all their lost bags

Dalint · 03/08/2022 21:23

The number on paper strapped around the handle is an 8 digit number and it seems faded and is in this format 1234-4321. I came across the dog walker as I crossed the road armed with a phone in hand recording and her dog sniffed it then she and her dog wandered on. I tried to ask her whether the dog was trained but she didn't speak English so probably felt more at risk of me than an abandoned suitcase. Throughout the day people have been mainly walking around it.

Report it to the council, as an environmental crime. My council loves doing these things and I assume they get a lot of money in fines. Our area is certainly cleaner.

Squiff70 · 03/08/2022 21:28

Why did you not call 101 immediately and report this? I wouldn't be going near it!

Dalint · 03/08/2022 21:28

It's not the entrance to a park. It's a public building which is not currently occupied due to the time of year and that's all the clues I am giving in case some murderous drug trafficker is on MN? It's a primary school and when I first noticed it I was a little alarmed as, it is an abandoned suitcase.

Because I've been watching every normal person walk by it without interest all day. The most interest shown to the suitcase was by the German Shepherd!

It is almost certainly nothing but you should report it (how soon all the warnings to immediately report any bag that looks abandoned were forgotten, endemic in my youth)

Sorry, should have said report to police.

It's not in an airport.

If you think there's a wee chance your head would be blown off then please report it before some poor muppet comes along and that happens to them? 🤣 is probably been dumped or forgotten but best to not take the chance!

I'd report it

It's not in an airport.

It didn't matter where it was. The IRA didn't bomb airports.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 03/08/2022 21:37

Go and have listen, there might be an abandoned baby in it... (I have a fantasy about finding an abandoned baby one day, then I'm going to keep it!) Although I imagine the dog would have been more interested..

How do you forget a suitcase?

OP posts:
RoseAndRose · 03/08/2022 21:38

Well I suppose it could contain a bomb (suitcases and suspicious packages can warrant a 999 call) or a body (I've just been watching 'The Indian Predator' on Netflix, so perhaps that should be 'parts of a body'

But I think I'd be more likely to report fly-tipping to council environmental services

Dalint · 03/08/2022 21:38

coffeepleeease · 03/08/2022 21:37

I'd report it

Why do I have to be the one who reports it and sounds like a fucking lunatic?

Fly-tipping marked by a bollard?
Maybe somebody reported it and the council marked it with a bollard to be picked up?
I'm trying to sound sane.
