... to be entertained by personal registration plates?

First off, I have a personal registration plate and I am not knocking them in general. You wouldn't really know it though, because it has a letter, three random numbers and my initials. Well you would if you know, as it makes it look as if the car dates from 1991, but it isn't "stand out".

I'm on about the weird ones, try-hard ones, just odd ones and the ones that look just daft.

M444 RKD. (Mark Dobson (for example). The name is Mark, not Maaark).

CL14 REK - It's Claire, not Cliare.

And where I live, a lot of plates starting with HG11 and similar. Having your postcode as a registration number? It's bizarre. Ironic, too, when the plate indicates the car was registered in Hampshire or Dorset, not Yorkshire.

And don't get me started on K155, M155 (seen on several white Audis), BO55 (my most hated one. So embarrassing! If you are really a "boss" you wouldn't need to tell everyone).

Yep I might be sneering and I expect a lot of brickbats. But what do other Mumsnetters think? Am I being mean? Any other examples?

Is Hyp0cr1t3 available for your car?

Anyone who has so much cash that they're prepared to spend big money on number plates that truly are distinctive (let alone one for each family member) simply to satisfy their ego, had a warped set of values imo. They're paying thousands for a piece of plastic worth about 30p, so that people notice them. Pathetic.

I'm not remotely judgy generally, but personalised number plates really set me off.

Carrotmum · 03/08/2022 21:25

We have a personalised plate on our car it’s a very close match for our surname ( which is extremely rare in the U.K.) and not doctored in any way. It cost very little as no one else would specially want it. I think it’s fun as anyone who knows us knows it’s a personal plate but no one else does.

Purpleforthewin · 03/08/2022 21:29

I find the non stand out ones more odd. What's the point? Loads round us have the letters as the first 3 of their surname and I don't understand.

Me too!!!!
Absolutely hate them.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/08/2022 21:36

Someone on my street has the registration that reads FANNY except the A is a number 4 or 7 I can’t remember.

Weirdo

mmm, mine cost:
£200 - now worth c. £2,000
£2,500 now worth £15,000+
£2,500 now worth £20,000+

so £5,200 now worth over £37,000
over 700% return if I sell them, or I can continue to watch them increasing in value faster than house prices!

sometimes it is best not to judge…

Another one entertained by private plates - and also I make up words out of what are probably not private plates at all. Keeps me occupied in a traffic jam.

TwoMonthsOff · 03/08/2022 22:13

@akkakk
is that what the sites (NOT dvla) are telling you they are worth ? As I have fallen into this trap as well (with my basic issue but quite unusual plate) and I listed it but got some really low offers. It wasn’t worth the trouble to me
there are a lot of sites online giving is high expectations that are not realistic at all.
fair play if that’s genuine though

More intrigued as to what a brickbat is? 😆

a critical remark or comment.

There's one near us that looks 'crotch' something like CR07 TCH! Every time I see it I can only see crotch.

I’m seeing Crotch Itch for some reason….😭

Conservative estimates based on prices others are up for / what others sell for etc…

they are also very short and would suit common names though they have no specific relevance to me…

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 04/08/2022 12:07

Seen today was a black Range Rover M155 URN and white Audi H111 NCH all crammed together. Educated guess at funeral director and cleaner.

Thatboymum · 04/08/2022 12:51

personaly I don’t understand people who waste there money buying ones with no immediate obvious meaning like yours that to me look like standard plates, there’s one initial letter on mine two numbers in mine which represent the year I got it for a big birthday and then 3 duplicate letters that absolutley don’t spell my name and aren’t even in my real name but are extremely obvious to what my nick name would be and from that it’s a no brainer what my real name is , it cost me almost 2k if I wanted my real name with just a number 4 for the A it was almost 25k. I don’t really care if others like it I certainly didn’t buy it to attention seek or stand out I bought it because I liked it and wanted it and generally like cars that’s all that should matter , it’s not for other peoples enjoyment

Blossomtoes · 04/08/2022 12:55

My favourite was MR5 5HOO. I was deeply envious.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 04/08/2022 17:12

I can't stop seeing them now. I saw a transit type van with three letters and 805S 😹 and a Volvo with A18 EVG but spaced out as A1 8EV G. Alan and Beverly Green maybe. They're all trying hard.

Do kids still spot car number plates?

OP posts:
Darkstar4855 · 04/08/2022 17:19

Be glad you don’t live on the Isle of Wight, OP. There’s a trend here for plates with 10W in them but spaced illegally e.g. if your initials are AB then you have AB10 WAB but space it AB 10W AB. It’s usually done by people who have only lived on the island for five minutes (true islanders are stuck in the last century and grimly hang on to their “DL” number plates).

It’s especially baffling given the general standard of driving on the island, why anyone would want to advertise they are an Isle of Wight driver is beyond me!

MilliwaysUniverse · 04/08/2022 17:30

My son does not have a personalised plate, but the reg is a bit naughty - we bought him the car without even looking at the reg plate, he was initially a bit embarrassed but now owns it. It also gave rise to his new family nickname - Biggus Dickus 😂

balalake · 04/08/2022 17:57

Providing a large amount of money is charged for them (let's say at least £5,000 each) I am OK with a way of raising cash for the government. Just hope it can be put to good use.

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/08/2022 20:47

I’ve never understood the particular hate for personalised plates. I mean, my neighbour has a quadrant of ornamental olive trees in large planters in her front garden, and I know from visiting the garden centre that they probably cost the better part of £2,000 all in and what’s wrong with a couple of colourful hanging baskets and a privet bush like the rest of us? But nobody rails at the pointless extravagance of that sort of thing. When really it’s just the same, it’s spending money on something you enjoy to make something you own feel more special to you.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 04/08/2022 21:56

I've definitely started something, I'm attracting them now. Just saw BO55 ODC yes on a Range Rover.

I don't hate them indeed I have one myself. It's the over the top ones that are an unintended joke I mean. Like Bev from earlier today all the boss ones etc that make me smirk.
