... to be entertained by personal registration plates?

First off, I have a personal registration plate and I am not knocking them in general. You wouldn't really know it though, because it has a letter, three random numbers and my initials. Well you would if you know, as it makes it look as if the car dates from 1991, but it isn't "stand out".

I'm on about the weird ones, try-hard ones, just odd ones and the ones that look just daft.

M444 RKD. (Mark Dobson (for example). The name is Mark, not Maaark).

CL14 REK - It's Claire, not Cliare.

And where I live, a lot of plates starting with HG11 and similar. Having your postcode as a registration number? It's bizarre. Ironic, too, when the plate indicates the car was registered in Hampshire or Dorset, not Yorkshire.

And don't get me started on K155, M155 (seen on several white Audis), BO55 (my most hated one. So embarrassing! If you are really a "boss" you wouldn't need to tell everyone).

Yep I might be sneering and I expect a lot of brickbats. But what do other Mumsnetters think? Am I being mean? Any other examples?

There's one near us that looks 'crotch' something like CR07 TCH! Every time I see it I can only see crotch.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/08/2022 15:37

The plates which don't quite work such as mentioned in the OP are a bit daft. I think the best I've seen round here was POO 2TAX ... on an accountant's car.
(Not sure about the O vs 0 before any plate pedants jump on me)

Cruisebabe · 03/08/2022 16:22

🤣🤣🤣🤣

An area close to us is nicknamed Fev and there’s more than one number plate with Fev around, we saw two on the same street in ‘Fev’ once.

risefromyourgrave · 03/08/2022 16:41

There’s (or at least there was) an optician where I used to live with the number plate LA51 EYE, which I quite liked.

ivykaty44 · 03/08/2022 16:42

I just never get the personal lates, often I know they are personal but it doesn't work in my head.

OP thanks for explain mark and Clair as I wouldn't know thats what they are supposed to read

we used to have a local Sofie with the f as a 4 I think and I could see that straight away

GettingOrganisedNow · 03/08/2022 16:42

I keep seeing plates with 'MUM' or 'MOM' in them, and that makes me cringe too. Like, is that the only thing you have to say about yourself? That you have kids?

XingMing · 03/08/2022 16:58

We have two, an old reg on a newer car -- which makes people smile when they see it, and a much newer with 00 in front of the same number. We don't own a car new enough to wear that, but the pair have increased significantly since they were bought so one day, when we are even older, we'll sell both to pay for the car we'll drive into our dotage!

Seen a fair few of those as well as DAD.

I find it easier and cheaper to just change my name instead of getting a personal plate

Sincerely

😂

I've told this story a few times so this will out me if anyone knows me IRL.

I used to walk to work every day and pass a bright coloured sports car, tiny low to the ground job with gull wing doors IIRC. I always used to wonder who owned the ostentatious car.

The number plate was DA6TNT - Da sex bomb Grin

One day I walked passed and saw the owner unfold himself about 17 times to get out, he was the tallest man I have ever seen and I am still baffled to this day at how he actually fitted in that car!

As a general rule of thumb, people with personal plates are dickheads. It's very rare that this isn't the case.

and you know this because?

FixTheBone · 03/08/2022 17:34

On an partly related matter. My mates tesla came with

BJ69 MMF

From the factory. The only plausible justifucation I've ever seen for paying to have a plate changed.

UrsulaPandress · 03/08/2022 17:38

I have a personal plate. A letter a number then my 3 initials. 🤷‍♀️

I could have the exact same set up which would spell my first name but couldn’t afford that.

It was a birthday present.

Bought DD one for her 18th.

Really don’t care if you judge me.

Fairislefandango · 03/08/2022 18:55

Someone who doesn't like personalised number plates saying how tacky and/or pointless they are? Fine and totally correct.

Someone who actually has a personalised number plate mocking other people with slightly different personalised number plates? Inexplicable.

Said person going as far as starting a whole thread in order to laugh at something they themselves own (but slightly different)? Bonkers.

Yes that's what I have.

My boss should have

KN08 HED

if it was available I would buy it for him

That’s funny 😭

I saw S9 TUD where I used to work he’d pick his partner up, he definitely wasn’t a stud, IMO

QuandaleDingle · 03/08/2022 20:41

Op join a group called "naff number plates" on fb! It's so funny

I think most private plates are a bit embarrassing although sometimes you do see a good one. The "BO55" ones are absolutely cringe as fuck though they're the absolute worst

JaceLancs · 03/08/2022 20:44

When I lived in the south east I regularly saw a vintage rolls Royce with the plate 4 AMY and I often wondered who Amy was and if the car really was for her

TwoMonthsOff · 03/08/2022 20:47

@JaceLancs
we used to see max bygraves rolls in sandbanks and Bournemouth MB1

he was often driving around I think it was blue …long time ago now

JaceLancs · 03/08/2022 20:52

Unlikely to out me but not bothered!
DP at the time was the local Fred Dibnah and we had old vehicles aplenty including steam - I once had to ring the DVLA to road register an old agricultural steam engine and after having a good laugh with them they said they would try and find something suitable (no cost to us) then rang back later to offer us PUF plus numbers which I thought was very kind of them

Could it have been D46 TNT?

DA6 TNT isn't a valid format, so it could be that it was not only naff but also a butchered illegal plate, too.
