... to be entertained by personal registration plates?

First off, I have a personal registration plate and I am not knocking them in general. You wouldn't really know it though, because it has a letter, three random numbers and my initials. Well you would if you know, as it makes it look as if the car dates from 1991, but it isn't "stand out".

I'm on about the weird ones, try-hard ones, just odd ones and the ones that look just daft.

M444 RKD. (Mark Dobson (for example). The name is Mark, not Maaark).

CL14 REK - It's Claire, not Cliare.

And where I live, a lot of plates starting with HG11 and similar. Having your postcode as a registration number? It's bizarre. Ironic, too, when the plate indicates the car was registered in Hampshire or Dorset, not Yorkshire.

And don't get me started on K155, M155 (seen on several white Audis), BO55 (my most hated one. So embarrassing! If you are really a "boss" you wouldn't need to tell everyone).

Yep I might be sneering and I expect a lot of brickbats. But what do other Mumsnetters think? Am I being mean? Any other examples?

Handy that you would avoid me then, because we definitely wouldn't get on. I can't stand people who make snap judgements of others based on nothing.

It’s not based on nothing, it’s based on experience. The kind of person who thinks it’s worth dropping hundreds to sort of write their name on their car and I are unlikely to be kindred spirits.

xogossipgirlxo · 03/08/2022 11:48

So, you can put your initials, but others can't put MAAARK? YABU.

Enb76 · 03/08/2022 11:49

I love the one I saw yesterday which was

SN04 DRP

if that belongs to an MNetter then kudos, it's fabulous.

Tinktravels · 03/08/2022 10:24

Not sure why you care what letters on on someone else's car.

Maybe someone's surname is boss

Yeh chill, it’s just Hugo cruising up the A10 in his try hard Range Rover.

Elphame · 03/08/2022 11:50

The most intriguing one I've ever seen was M15 many many years ago now.

It was on an ancient white builder's pick up truck of all things. I wonder where it is now.

I'm going to get PN15 BKR

SnowyPetals · 03/08/2022 12:09

Pot.... Kettle.... Black OP! All personal number plates are a waste of money.

I just passed a black Range Rover parked on a drive with BO55 and three letters. Also seen GP51 BOY also on a Range Rover but white.

There's a wasp/pest removal van I see near here with BU66 GUY and the business is the big guy so that I thought was kinda fun.

The SU51 SUE one, less so!!

whatdoidonowffs · 03/08/2022 12:20

They'd work in Stratford on Avon a treat.

There is one near me that has DI8 then my initials. It feels personal.

FixTheBone · 03/08/2022 12:44

The worst are the ones that have the make or model of car.

There's a porsche taycan near us with the plate T67 CAN...

Why!? It's already written on the back of the car.

Ughhhhh1 · 03/08/2022 12:47

Tbh I have no idea why you'd pay for one that didn't stand out.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 03/08/2022 12:57

The one I see a lot of is people with an X5 with X5 on their plate, never seen it for any other BMW model, or any other car make at all, only seems to be reserved for X5 owners

X5 THF for example, the letters may be initials, but they always follow that format

Why would someone buy an X5 plate if they didn't have an X5 though? Of course you won't see X5 on 3 series.

All personalised numbers plates are bizarre!

TheSandgroper · 03/08/2022 13:04

You might like to live in Western Australia. We do the usual personal number plates but, also, each country shire has its own. www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/district-series-plates.asp
www.plateshed.com/wa_shires/

DH is not from WA and couldn’t understand why I would comment on cars saying “that’s a long way from home”. Although, to be fair, the furthest away I found. WA numbers plate was Dublin 😆

godmum56 · 03/08/2022 13:04

PuggyMum · 03/08/2022 11:24

I'm with you OP.

It's the spacing of them too - my best friend had one and it gave me the rage every time I saw it. It was meant to read DH4 8BFF with the DH being his initials and the rest loosely resembling her name. It just looked tragic.

I have a cherished plate that came with the car so means nothing to me at all but it's a proper plate that's spaced correctly!

I vote YANBU

incorrect spacing is illegal. I have got a personalised plate but apart from the fact that it doesn't match the car because car is much newer, you wouldn't know it was personalised unless you knew me. It was a gift from my late husband and I will keep it until I no longer drive. Its now on its third car. TBH unless its particularly funny and on a car which is parked somewhere and I walk past it, I don't notice number plates and don't care what other people choose to spend their money on.

That's kinda my point tho, same as the Taycan post above, why get a plate with the model of the car listed?

We all know it's an X5 due to its size and the fact you don't indicate

I've never seen any other car with a personal plate that lists the car model, it's only ever been an X5.

Coldiron · 03/08/2022 13:12

The best one I ever saw was a butchers van with:

M1 NCE

I definitely think the humorous ones are fine

alnawire · 03/08/2022 13:13

@Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs

I definitely misunderstood you Blush

M444 RKD. (Mark Dobson (for example). The name is Mark, not Maaark).
CL14 REK - It's Claire, not Cliare.

I think you're missing the point with these types of number plates. Of course, M4RK, MARK, M4RK 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 /5 etc are already going to be taken and extremally costly to buy.
So for the general public who may be looking at a personalised reg, things like CL14 REK are all that are left and available at a decent price.
