To think that prisoners should have to pay towards their keep?

So you commit a crime and go to prison and your kept also for free, no money worries etc.
If you can afford it shouldnt you pay something towards it? it costs country alot of money to keep you locked up why not contribute?
Your not exactly spending your money while your locked up anyway.

Prisoners can earn tiny amounts of money through prison jobs. Not everyone has one as not every prisoner is able to work.

They can spend their money only with approved providers who are generally massively overpriced. They can't just put in an order with Amazon.

It's a giant scam already to exploit them and they are more than aware of it.

KettrickenSmiled · 30/07/2022 14:06

Most female prisoners are incarcerated for not having enough money to pay bills. What a stroke of brilliance to ask them for more money they do not have!
If they can't pay up, maybe corporal punishment could be the next deterrent? You could have it televised, & sell the content for profit. Sadistic enjoyment of other people's misery would be a great money-spinner.

As to everyone else - Your not exactly spending your money while your locked up anyway - I'm loving your assumption that everyone has a pot of money to call on.

What a comfortable little life you must have OP. And plenty of time to come up with genius plans for penalising some of the most disadvantaged members of society even more. A career writing for the Daily Mail awaits you, & then a job working for Patel at the Home Office. She'd like the cut of your sanctimonious, ignorant jib.

I assume benefits are stopped once someone's in prison.

yes but what about savings, money they had in their bank account before they went inside.

This is a spectacular thread which demonstrates almost none of the posters have a clue what happens in prisons or how it works 😂

I haven't time to post more, but the prison system already makes people pay for TV access and any food beyond the basic meals.

Nothappyatwork · 30/07/2022 14:07

I could probably do my job from prison l if my employer was open to the idea. I could probably carry on as usual to be honest and then continue to pay tax and they could charge me rent was that kind of the thing that you had in mind OP ?

No one has said everyone should pay, only those who do have means. Why would you want wealthy people to be living free at the expense of the tax payer?

Mangogogogo · 30/07/2022 14:09

In some states if you get tagged you pay for that.. it’s something like $50 for the fitting and the equipment then $10 a week upkeep.

of course the alternative is to spend bail in prison

i think taxes are enough to keep prisoners and they do earn money to buy other things and access to emails etc

EhatBow · 30/07/2022 14:10

I'm thinking of people who will continue to collect e.g. investment income or royalties whilst in prison or who have a large asset base before they go in. Obviously it won't be the majority, but it is a significant number.

Mangogogogo · 30/07/2022 14:10

I also think a lot of People on here live a very lucky life that they’ve not had a serious crime perpetrated against them or someone they love

They don't even get minimum wage?!

LunaLemon · 30/07/2022 14:11

HDready · 30/07/2022 14:06

And what about people who are wrongfully convicted OP? Give them a refund when they leave?

I believe currently this can result in you being charged for your keep on release

HidingUnderMyDuvet · 30/07/2022 14:11

Wait until you find out that prisoners are actually paid to be in prison! Not much, but they do get a daily allowance of something like £1- it has a special name but I can't remember what it is....
And then many choose to engage with education which gets them paid more, and jobs which get them even more.

Most have got nothing else, and have to pay for their toiletries and supplement the meagre meals they are given. They certainly wouldn't be able to contribute to their expenses!

LunaLemon · 30/07/2022 14:11

If that's true that is so wrong if anything they should be being paid compensation.

DimplesToadfoot · 30/07/2022 14:12

Oooh no don't do that, I'm nearing retirement. I can't afford care home fees should I ever find myself in need so I have every intention of breaking the law no idea how and retiring to Holloway Del Sol

user1487194234 · 30/07/2022 14:13

I totally disagree with this suggestion
In fact I think most people in prison should not be there

How exactly are you going to do your job from prison?

You will have random days of lockup in your cell
Access to the internet only in the library, only if you are studying and still with a lot of limitations
A limited list of phone numbers you can call
Expectation that you fit round the timetable of prison

For security reasons, you can't set up your laptop and start up your WFH job.

KettrickenSmiled · 30/07/2022 14:14

girlfriend44 · 30/07/2022 14:06

some arent worried about that. They dont mind going to prison, some even keep going back.
Why should they have access to their savings when they get out?

So much moaning is done about people on benefits what about people in prison costing the tax payers a fortune!

Good grief, where are you getting these lofty assertions from? What the fuck do you know about the penal system, re-offending rates & reasons, or the best methods of reducing recidivism?

You seem like some kind of sadist OP, dressing your horrible fascination with punishment up in a veneer of false moralising.

Bluebellsand · 30/07/2022 14:14

It is a horrible, evil idea. Like the one that fines homeless people who live on the streets.

constantias · 30/07/2022 14:15

Don't they give a portion of their prison earnings towards their keep, or am I mixing fact with fiction?

KittyCatsby · 30/07/2022 14:16

Family members can add money to a prisoners ' account ' they can also get a job in the prison if available such as in the kitchens , as a wing cleaner , in the gym , the laundry , the library , or a workshop such as light assembly , or packing etc . They get paid a nominal amount which they can spend on canteen . This could be toiletries , stamps , writing paper , or even food to supplement their diet.

No they do not get minimum wage!

And even the elderly prisoners are generally highly motivated to have a job:
It's something to do and it's usually social
Even a pennies difference adds up between not working and working

constantias · 30/07/2022 14:18

I didn't know you could be other than council tax (as a last resort) or fraud?

Ontomatopea · 30/07/2022 14:18

So much moaning is done about people on benefits what about people in prison costing the tax payers a fortune! people cost money. Deal with it.

constantias · 30/07/2022 14:20

But, no, I don't think they should have to contribute towards their 'keep'.
