I’m very overweight and on the bariatric pathway. I don’t want the surgery so I need to turn it around but I’m overwhelmed by the mountain I need to climb.

I am making progress with weight loss albeit slow but I really need to exercise more for health - I know weight loss is mostly about diet.

Have you transformed your body over 45?

I have a knee injury which makes things harder but surely I can do it.

Feeling very low today.

Just popping on to say christ I can’t recommend keto enough. I’m eating pretty clean and just having 3 meals and I’ve not been hungry once. Even skipped dinner yesterday.

My blood pressure is significantly more stable in less than 2 weeks and I’m 10lb down in total.

Thank you whoever recommended Jason Fung,

Christ I wish the NHS would start educating people properly. I got my appointment for the Bariatric Clinic in Jan - I need to lose 5 stone to no longer be eligible so if I can get maybe 2 off by then it will be a good start 4 months, that’s less than 2lb a week so I think it’s doable.

DH has also lost weight and is already a belt notch down.

Planning to start 16/8 from September.

I'm so happy for you it sounds like you're doing amazingly!

Jason Fung has changed my life - beware of the anger that comes from discovering that all those years of feeling badly about yourself & believing you were stupid or a glutton were due to crap NHS information!

Merryoldgoat · 17/08/2022 20:15

@GibbonsGoatsGibbons

thank you!

I was a bit late today and took my breakfast and lunch to work.

Ive been off so checked email, had a catch up with my manager and it was 12. I hadn’t eaten since 7 the night before and wasn’t even remotely hungry.

Every time those stupid social media videos appear with some daft trainer taking about ‘it’s all about a calorie deficit’ I nearly throw my phone. I expect the advice will change one day but I’m just going to focus on me.

Im so fat that I suspect I’d need to lose a minimum of 3 stone before I look any different but hopefully my AW workwear will be more comfy this year.

I tried Atkins years ago but I think I ate too much processed stuff and didn’t have so much fat so didn’t have the same effect.

I’ve had zero UPF and I can see I look better. My assistant said that I look different, really ‘good’ today and I think I just look more alive as my skin is clearer and I look more awake.

Does Dr Fung have a name for his fans? Fungsters?

Wow fantastic update. Looking and feeling better already. Keep updating.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 18/08/2022 09:41

Every time those stupid social media videos appear with some daft trainer taking about ‘it’s all about a calorie deficit’ I nearly throw my phone. 😆
it's the "just move a bit more" type ones that do my head in

If you like podcasts the fasting method is fab (for fungsters!) & the rage is well described by Eve Mayer (life in the fasting lane).

3 stone is about 18kg I think? I'm down that since April & still wearing mostly the same clothes - albeit swimming in the tops that felt "safe" before & able to wear the "only for home" ones anywhere. My trousers & pants are literally falling off me though so have changed a few of those for safety 😂

I am stuck on a massive plateau for the last 2 (3?) months but equally I prefer this set point to my previous one!

Merryoldgoat · 18/08/2022 10:03

@GibbonsGoatsGibbons I’m currently binging the pod casts - it actually really helps to stay focused.

I find the scales are jumping about so I’m going to try to just weigh weekly but I have a pair of trousers which fit but you could strike a match on my arse so I’m going to try them weekly as a measurement of progress.

Again, I got up and DH had made me breakfast of bacon and eggs. I made a coffee, sat down and read the news and realised I’d not eaten yet. As I said last night to DH it’s not that I don’t want chocolate and crisps, I just don’t ever feel hungry enough to be overcome with bad decision making which is completely unbelievable.

I suspect the convenience store I used to go to on my way to work has seen a decline in profits 🤣🤣

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 18/08/2022 10:05

@GibbonsGoatsGibbons 3st since April is amazing!!

do you have much more to lose? I’m sure I heard a couple of 36 hour fasts could help break the plateau but they sound hardcore!!

OP posts:
GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 19/08/2022 23:17

you could strike a match on my arse 🤣
That does sound like a great measure to use - scales are tricksy.

I'm "just" obese (no morbidly anymore) now another 15kg should get me to "over weight" 🎉😂

I actually do 2x40hr fast/week as my normal minimum (often do 3 or one that's longer) although I'm currently doing my first 40hr in a week & a half because life has been a bit complicated.
It's really not hard at all if you work your way up to it - although loads of bramble picking & making 24 muffins with DD like today is NOT ideal!

I'm at peace with my plateau because I seem to be getting smaller despite not weighing less so I'm telling myself I'm building muscle...

RIP Merry's convenience store 🎉

And thank you, it does sound good - it feels slow though!

Merryoldgoat · 10/09/2022 12:07

Hello in case anyone cares!

I’ve had a bit of up and down with my weight but I’ve solidly stuck to keto for a month and an 13lb down.

I’ve been experimenting with new food and haven’t felt healthier in years - sleeping better, more energy, no energy crashes and better able to deal with cravings and hunger.

I’m much thinner in the face and last night I just thought ‘I should do a workout’ so I did a seated strength training workout I’ve been wanting to try.

But the biggest thing:

My cholesterol has gone from over 9 to 5.7 and my blood pressure has stabilised at a lower level - hoping to get off some meds in a few months if I can get it to 115/65 ish.

My statin got it to 7.5 but it’s been there for over a year and I was lighter than this. I’m sure the change in diet is what’s taken it down a notch.

So a good update I think.

Hope everyone’s health journeys are going well too ❤️

sagalooshoe · 10/09/2022 12:19

Thats really good progress!

Have you tried those jeans again?

Your 'you could strike match on my arse' comment made me laugh.

sagalooshoe · 10/09/2022 12:23

PS I also have bad knees and I'm currently trialling the 'lying flat on my bed scrolling mumsnet raising one leg then the other' routine. I've done 10 mins so far - I'd be bored within 30 seconds usually. Every little helps!

Gelatoaficionado · 10/09/2022 13:08

Hey Merryoldgoat, absolutely great to see your name pop up and read you excellent progress report - well done you, and especially good to see the health parameters, cholesterol etc are improving You sound so positive in the update compared to your OP.

Im continuing the journey, Ive dropped nearly 11kg since the start of meds about 10 weeks ago, going from morbidly obese to class I obese which feels great. I feel as though I have dropped 10 years in age along with the weight - Im energised, sleeping better, running up and down the stairs at work rather than taking the lifts, and my face looks like mine again.
I have rediscovered a whole stored wardrobe of smaller clothes and charity shopped several giant pairs of jeans, which felt really positive so am all set for autumn. Still trying to get the habit exercising every day - Im fine when its out the house at the gym or going out for an activity but at home get distracted by children, admin, housework too much - I need to learn to prioritise myself and my health better amongst all the other demands on my time. Perhaps other posters will recognise this problem - what do you do to get round it?

Dixiechickonhols · 10/09/2022 13:47

Fantastic very well done - do keep updating. Great news you can see benefits medically so soon. I’m 2.5 lb off after 16 days away on holiday in Florida. I had some extras but everything in moderation and obviously lots of walking. I’m feeling great.

Merryoldgoat · 10/09/2022 14:23

@Gelatoaficionado

thank you - I feel much better. Still ups and downs but generally so much better. Your progress is inspirational - I hope I can be as successful as you eventually!

@Dixiechickonhols

You sound like you’re doing brilliantly - V jealous of Florida!

@sagalooshoe

Not yet - I’m going to try them when I hit 21lb so I don’t get disheartened!

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 11/09/2022 08:33

Just did my weekly weigh in - 15lb down - just passed a stone in 6 weeks.

That’s amazing for me but more importantly feels sustainable and reasonable.

Already I’m better at listening to hunger cues. We had a big breakfast yesterday (waffles and syrup and cream) and I just wasn’t hungry until dinner so I didn’t eat until then - before I’d have just eaten for the sake of it.

If 2lb a week is a normal loss that’s about 30lb more before my first bariatric appointment and that’s what I’m going to focus on .

OP posts:
Gelatoaficionado · 11/09/2022 10:41

Wow! That is excellent, and all the better for being easy for you to stick to and sustain. Looking forward to hearing the rest of your journey

MakeWayMoana · 11/09/2022 15:56

This thread has made me so happy!

I love that you’re doing what works for you, adding in little bits of activity and not letting it run your life. I think acknowledging that food isn’t good or bad but is all good in the right situation - your big waffle and syrup breakfast was right for you that day, so you had it and went back to intuitively eating straight away, rather than beating yourself up and binging before ‘starting again’ the next day.

I think that’s the danger with most ‘dieting’ or ‘weight loss plan’ or whatever - you fall off the wagon and can’t get back on, rather than realising there is no wagon, one meal doesn’t make you gain weight, it’s all part of your over all nutrition.

I feel inspired, so thank you!

Merryoldgoat · 11/09/2022 16:59

Sorry - the waffles and syrup was all keto - almond waffles and Sukrin syrup. I’ve been in ketosis for nearly a month now (bar two days when I had dinner out).

But I’m glad you’re inspired! I am doing so much better than before.

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 14/09/2022 20:38

Just popping on to say ‘match-arse’ trousers now fit - still would like them a touch looser but they’re definitely wearable.

I also tried a pair I got from May which didn’t do up back then.

They now get on and do up easily which is a massive change.

I’m not having a good week health wise as my BP is flying about but hopefully it will stabilise soon. Still days like today would often end up with me comfort eating and feeling shit which I didn’t even consider.

OP posts:
sagalooshoe · 14/09/2022 20:51

Yey to the jeans fitting again! I'm am living in one pair of leggings being washed and worn over and over (plus a dress or 2) as I am stubbornly refusing to spend money on clothes when I have 5 pairs that fitted a year ago. I will make them fit again! Thank you for your inspiration!

Merryoldgoat · 18/09/2022 13:55

Sunday weigh in - 3lb down this week so now a total loss of 18lb is 7 weeks.

Starting to be able to notice it now but still a massive way to go.

Enjoying not being hungry all the time though and it’s starting to become normal.

OP posts:
Gelatoaficionado · 20/09/2022 14:59

Just seen your message, brilliant progress Merryoldgoat. If my conversion to old money is correct thats over a stone in 7 weeks, which is amazing, and especially if you are doing it in a sustainable and healthy way that doesnt have any bad impacts on the rest of your life (cravings/mood swings etc). So glad you are starting to notice it and heres hoping you are doing some other positive things for yourself (like the meeting friends for coffee).

I still sometimes want a quick fix/to amputate something and have to keep reminding myself it will take time - I never became obese overnight, it just crept up on me , so it will take time to creep off. But the other day I ran up the stairs at work, which I couldnt do in the summer without getting breathless, and even such a small thing felt amazing - I was so used to being tired out by such things.
But, as you say, its starting to become the 'new normal'
I will do my monthly weigh in and measure tomorrow, so will check in later this week.

Retrievemysanity · 20/09/2022 15:53

Well done @Merryoldgoat It may be a massive way to go but it will fly by and I’m sure by Christmas you’ll be so pleased with yourself.

Gelatoaficionado · 16/10/2022 08:16

Hey MerryOldGoat, thought I would bump your thread and ask you how its going? Hoping you are still seeing the weight coming off and that the changes with keto you are making feel better and natural. Have you had your appointment at the Bariatric clinic yet?

Im on 16 weeks of meds and just over 16 kg lighter, feel amazing but none of my clothes fit, and I dont really want to splash out on new ones as there is still more to lose. This is a new and amazing problem that I feel glad to have! Have lost about 14 cm off my waist, and have hit some more of my rewards (active days out with kids) over the last month. And I can hula hoop again!😇

Keep going, it is possible to transform everything 😁
