Screaming child in tent next door

Sittininafield · 29/07/2022 05:07

AIBU to think the parents are selfish knob heads. Fourth night in a row. Toddler screams from 10.30 till 11.30 ish every night and then periodically every couple of hours. Not sad baby crying but toddler tantrum screaming and shouting. I am beginning to think it is the spawn of satan. Why would you go camping if your child doesn’t sleep, and why wouldn’t you go home out of consideration for others after a couple of nights? They are quite now but I’m awake since the last screams at 3.30. Should I go and shake their tent in sleep deprived, demented re-wenge?

Why go camping if you are completely intolerant of others! Though I do recommend wild camping except the wildlife can be louder, owls!!!

wejammin · 29/07/2022 07:37

I think it's just part of camping - kids crying, people snoring, people shagging/arguing/farting. If you're easily annoyed don't camp or take industrial earphones.
We camp every year, my oldest is autistic. One year when he was about 7 he had an infected nail bed that required twice daily soaks in warm salt water and a new plaster. He would scream and yell and holler twice a day for 10 minutes. It was mortifying and I hated it but it's also part of parenting and we are entitled to a family holiday. I accept sometimes that will mean exposing other people to my children's unreasonableness, and I accept I will encounter their unreasonableness. Such is life.

lolaspinola · 29/07/2022 07:37

Try ear plugs.

Stabbitystabstab · 29/07/2022 07:39

Silicone mouldable ear plugs... God send.
It drowns out the 4am magpies, I'm sure it can drown out someone's screeching crotch goblin.
Why do people take toddlers camping? It's bloody selfish AND stupid. If they can't afford anything else, then wait a year until they can. No-one NEEDS a holiday. I bet they are regretting every second too.

nomistake · 29/07/2022 07:39

Those suggesting ear plugs - which ones would block out a screaming toddler tantrum? I need to know!

Signoramarella · 29/07/2022 07:40

Then don't go camping. We went once it was shit, never again. I'm.not paying to hear snoring and other people's children at 6am.bleating..... now we're in a caravan, with earplugs. It's bliss!

Dontcareforthehaters · 29/07/2022 07:44

Although I do sympathise with your situation because it sucks, I also feel for the family with the toddler who isn't sleeping. Toddlers are so unpredictable and a truly perfect home sleeper could be a terrible tent sleeper. If you're having a terrible time then maybe it's you who could consider leaving. Again, I know that this option sucks but the other family has every right to be there, despite their non sleeping toddler.

Honestly the mouldable ones are incredibly good.
In another life I was a scout leader. I refused to do the nighttime wake ups as I did all of the cooking, but my partner did. I didn't wake up once when he was being dragged out of bed to deal with tears, wet sleeping bags etc.

gogohmm · 29/07/2022 07:46

@Stabbitystabstab

Give me a miserable toddler any day over drunk adults with a generator and sound system worthy of the Notting hill carnival! That happened in Cornwall once.

Last time I stayed on a place with hook up in Norfolk an older couple had the tv on until past midnight then were boiling a kettle periodically throughout the night. That site was adults only.

Mostly we festival or rally camp, no kids usually for his hobby and we are self anaesthetised from the free flowing liquor😁 but the snoring....

Had nobody on this thread ever heard of ear plugs for camping ?

And you would get up and leave the camp site would you? Middle of the night? If I opened my car (Tiguan R line) the campers directly in front of it and for the next 30 m would be delivered a free intimate X-ray by the hideously bright xenon lights. Not only that but the light system then cycles through its "start up" mode that takes about 25 seconds and involves flashing, side lights and is basically a silent disco. I don't have the option to leave my car open without lights, so would be what, trying to pack a tent away with a screaming toddler and a car that can be seen blowing from out of space? I bet that would REALLY help People sleep!😂

Or you know, you could just be a practical camper and take east plugs, sleep mask and booze to help you sleep. Ido and background noise barely even bothers me through the whisper thin fabric of my temporary abode.

I wouldn’t subject people to it night after night. I’d go home after trying something different night two. Your car sounds ridiculous.

littleburn · 29/07/2022 07:47

I thought ear plugs were essential on a camping trip for this very reason!

knittingaddict · 29/07/2022 07:47

paddingtonstares · 29/07/2022 07:24

I'm really surprised someone hasn't shouted 'shut that child up!' From another tent. 🤣
The campsites I've been on there is usually someone who is gobbier. Gentle politeness and tolerance is usually in short supply with sleep deprivation.

I think I might be the camper you need. I was so close to doing that with one particular group on the last weekend we spent in our caravan. So close.

OhmygodDont · 29/07/2022 07:47

By the third night the parents should of taken the child home. The child clearly isn’t enjoying it, the parents mustn’t be either. It’s just a futile experience.

No camping won’t be silent yes there will be snoring, maybe you’ll hear A drunken argument and nature will sing loudly too and the odd crying baby here or there but every night from the same tent for ages isn’t acceptable. It’s just selfish.

Lovemusic33 · 29/07/2022 07:50

Sadly that’s the joy of camping. If it’s not a baby/toddler crying it’s loud drunk people or some clever dick that’s brought a generator with them 🤣, loud music, noisy kids, people talking loudly, kids kicking balls near your tent….it’s all part of the package. Maybe camping isn’t for you?

womaninatightspot · 29/07/2022 07:52

Sounds brutal. I do wild camping which is lovely with no one around. I really don’t get paying to sleep in a field with others. Am in Scotland though so the rules are different. Our council has put out portaloos in frequently used wild camping spots, cleaned daily. More bins and rangers to keep things tidy/ encourage people to keep stuff tidy. Really made wild camping much more accessible.

ThatsMsAtomicBob · 29/07/2022 07:53

If you don't like noise, camping probably isn't the best bet. Neither are hotels actually.

Decent ear plugs are the best investment you'll ever make.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/07/2022 07:59

It’s a pain in the arse but if you are at a camp site they can be v noisy.

Ear plugs. Usually I take the sponge ones, but you want wax ones for extreme situations.

I would gently go round and say can you do anything to keep it down.. but gently.. camping is a cheap holiday and they are entitled to one too.

also try and move pitches

GG1986 · 29/07/2022 08:01

As annoying as a screaming child may be, you went on holiday in a tent, you can't expect a peaceful nights sleep unfortunately.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/07/2022 08:02

Oh yeah - or silicon rather than wax.,

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 29/07/2022 08:14

Email the site op. Quite hours need enforcing. Even if that means Chucky needs taking home.

SherbertLemonDrop · 29/07/2022 08:17

Sounds awful. Hopefully they are leaving soon. Not a holiday atall.

doodlywoodlydingdong · 29/07/2022 08:19

LunaLights · 29/07/2022 06:43

Why on earth would you have a car that does a light display every time you open it? What is the point? Aside from sounding like the perfect trigger for any photosensitive epileptics who had the misfortune of seeing it….

It’s just the cars start up sequence 🤷🏼‍♀️😂. I literally have no control over it and had no idea it would do that when I ordered it. But I’m assuming is a safety thing to show all your lights are working. Most modern cars do similar and the lights are so bright any campers would be like vampires suddenly caught in the suns rays. Tents in tatters, bodies decayed and powdered from the atomic bright radiation 😜😲.

SherbertLemonDrop · 29/07/2022 08:19

I complained about the screaming child next door to us in a hotel but we had been there for 3 days and it screamed every night for hours. I rang reception who went to check if they were OK and surprise surprise no more crying baby after that. They were using the holiday to let the baby self bloody soothe then decided against it when I complained.

SkankingWombat · 29/07/2022 08:20

As long as they are trying to deal with it rather than having chosen this week to sleep train their child using the CIO method, it is what it is. As others have said, camping is rarely quiet at night. Sometimes it's kids or drunk people, often it's the wildlife, but most commonly it is snorers IME.
I went to an adults-only festival a few weeks ago. A man a few tents up snored like a freight train, which I got round by staying up very late and drinking enough that when I did fall into bed, sleep was quick and deep. I was still awakened at 6am by a cacophony of cows, sheeps, chickens, the birds, and what sounded like a large pack of dogs!

I hope that's a blackadder reference.
