To be so glad Tavistock is being replaced.

So Tavistock is shutting down and being replaced with two new clinics. I’m so glad - DD 14 has been on Tavistock’s waiting list for 2 years and now there will be a better opportunity for her. Such a win for young trans rights Flowers

I doubt others here will agree with you. But it seems to be a step in the right direction, trans healthcare is woefully lacking, and the waiting lists are insane. It needed a massive overhaul at the very least.

I hope your DD gets the treatment she needs

It does sound as though it will be an improvement, but still such a long wait to get seen. I hope your DD doesn't have to wait for too long.

saltwaterandsuncream · 28/07/2022 18:11

@UWhatNow this, in bundles.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 28/07/2022 18:12

Having just finished reading Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier I couldn’t agree more. It’s frightening what we are allowing our children to do to themselves.

This is how I heard it too. One of the findings was that so many individuals present and it’s a huge rise like 400% which requires greater scrutiny instead of assuming that transitioning is the one fit answer.

I see it as a victory all round.

Supersee · 28/07/2022 18:15

@UWhatNow absolutely this.

SigourneyHoward · 28/07/2022 18:16

The interim Cass report on GIDS was clear in how the service was failing young people. That it has been ordered to shut down by Spring 2023 suggests the final report will be devastating. Young people deserve well evidenced, holistically informed health care. Hopefully, the non insular regional centres will be more transparent in how they work and won't be led down irresponsible health pathways that require whistleblowers to show the damage being done.

Absolutely this.

It definitely good news because Tavistock was failing children. Hopefully the new centres will offer much more mental health support and less of the other 'treatments'.

All of this.

Harridan1981 · 28/07/2022 18:18

Reading between the lines, the Tavistock is being closed for being too quick to rush to puberty blockers without looking at the bigger picture. This is a good thing for the rights and health of children.

Preach!

It is not the whole of the Tavistock, it is just the gender clinic. The Tavistock and Portman does lots of other work that has no links to the gender clinic.

Bikeybikeface · 28/07/2022 18:22

So lucky for your child that this has happened and your DC will get the right help before deciding to make permanent changes to their body.

How is it a good thing?

what treatment does your DD need?

titchy · 28/07/2022 18:24

It is fabulous news for your dd and others like her isn't it - finally getting the appropriate treatment which fully explores their issues including their MH. Not being scared of that because some idiots think exploring the underlying issues is akin to conversion therapy.

Good luck to your dd OP! Flowers

RoseslnTheHospital · 28/07/2022 18:29

I also welcome the change to focus on mental health provision, holistic treatment, following evidence based treatment and on research and record keeping. It shouldn't have needed the Cass report and the Inadequate rating for this to happen, but at least it is happening.

MeditationAndMusic · 28/07/2022 18:36

Yes, I think it will be a good thing. Lots of children will be treated for their mental health condition and not have their body mutilated. Good news for your child to get the mental health help so obviously needed.

Johnnysgirl · 28/07/2022 18:38

A win for trans rights? Hmm

inmyslippers · 28/07/2022 18:39

It's a win for kids. The help they actually need

ChagSameachDoreen · 28/07/2022 18:40

Definitely a win for young people questioning the gender roles society places on them.

Oh don't talk tripe. Trans people routinely wait years for any kind of treatment and are treated vilely by professionals with attitudes and language like yours.
Anecdote is not data.

Yeah, God forbid human rights apply to a group you don't approve of...

skilpadde · 28/07/2022 18:48

It's good news. I hope there is decent investment in the new services so that patients are offered adequate mental health support.

I will be very happy if this marks an end to affirmation and its accelerated pathway to medication. I want to see the return of watchful waiting, with a greater focus on the underlying issues, and analysis and record-keeping of outcomes.

Floisme · 28/07/2022 18:50

I completely agree that anecdote is not data and, if I recall correctly, the lack of data kept by GIDs was one of the shocking things to come out of Keira Bell judicial review.

I wish your daughter all the best op and I hope this announcement is a win for the rights of all children.
