To be so glad Tavistock is being replaced.

So Tavistock is shutting down and being replaced with two new clinics. I’m so glad - DD 14 has been on Tavistock’s waiting list for 2 years and now there will be a better opportunity for her. Such a win for young trans rights Flowers

Yeah, God forbid human rights apply to a group you don't approve of...

What human rights are currently being denied? Name just one...

Agreed with this. Tavistock was criminal. I hope young people suffering with gender dysphoria now receive more appropriate care. Good luck to your child OP.

RollerPolarBear · 28/07/2022 18:56

You must be really relieved that the issues at the clinic have been identified before your DD started treatment and she should now get better care than she would have. I hope she’s ok.

FOJN · 28/07/2022 19:01

This is good news and I do think it's a win for gender questioning young people. There is no evidence for an affirmation only approach to care (quite the opposite in fact) and the Tavistock have been hopeless at collecting data which may have provided evidence for better care for young people. They have also shown a remarkable lack of curiosity about the 4000% increase in referrals to the service and appear to have ignored co-morbid mental health conditions, childhood trauma and neuro diversity which seem to be prevalent among the adolescents referred to them in recent years.

I sincerely hope the new clinics do take the holistic approach to care which young people deserve.

Abhannmor · 28/07/2022 19:01

One can only hope the likes of eg Mermaids are kept well away from the new clinics.

Rainbowshit · 28/07/2022 19:02

It's great news. Several whistleblowers have raised concerns that children are being failed by GIdS and this announcement backs them up.

Hopefully children will get appropriate treatment now and an evidence base will be built for the longer term effects of puberty blockers.

MajorieEks · 28/07/2022 19:08

More holistic care and better evidence based approaches can only be a good thing! The whistleblowers at GIDS were concerned that children suffering from trauma or that were grappling with being gay were too quickly affirmed onto drugs and treatments that had serious consequences and the cass report has highlighted how not enough is known about the use of hormones and puberty blockers.

I hope your DC receives a better standard of care Flowers

Hopefully this will be one of the recommendations. It's clear lobbying groups have had far too much influence to the detriment of children.

greywinds · 28/07/2022 19:12

I feel awfully sorry for the kids and young people failed by clearly inadequate provision, much as this seems a good step.

It is fabulous news for your dd and others like her isn't it - finally getting the appropriate treatment which fully explores their issues including their MH. Not being scared of that because some idiots think exploring the underlying issues is akin to conversion therapy.

Good luck to your dd OP! Flowers

Oh don't talk tripe. Trans people routinely wait years for any kind of treatment and are treated vilely by professionals with attitudes and language like yours.
Anecdote is not data.

Ironically one of the main criticism levelled at Tavistock is the complete absence of any data in relation to the children that attended the clinic, in particular a lack of data on the impact of puberty blockers on children under 16.

Clymene · 28/07/2022 19:17

@ClaudiusTheGod - I'm sure the OP doesn't know what treatment her child needs. That's why we go to doctors after all, to help us
find out what the issue is and explore treatment options.

The Tavistock has badly let down young people and totally failed in their duty of care. They deserve better. I hope with better evidence based care, we will see a reversal of some of the brutal physical remedies that have been meted out to children with mental health issues.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 28/07/2022 19:20

Hopefully people will listen to David Bell and stop referring to 'trans children'

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 28/07/2022 19:24

Thank goodness young trans-identified people will now get good quality help to explore the issue thoroughly. It should work out better for both those who eventually do transition and those who don’t.

pointythings · 28/07/2022 19:29

I think this is a huge step forward. I'm not GC, but I do think mental health should be put at the very heart of this service and medical interventions absolutely shouldn't be rushed. Ideally I'd like to see more services develop at least regionally, but this is a start.

The Cass report was as far from unevidenced anecdote as you can get. It was damning and showed children had been mistreated for years.

Helleofabore · 28/07/2022 19:36

That Dr Cass has instigated this before her final report and that she declared GIDS a failure is a huge flashing sign that the previous model was significantly flawed.

That focus on timely and holistic treatment will certainly benefit many children and young people like your teen, OP. With so many clinicians now raising the alarm around affirming only treatment, it is crucial that the new clinics return to evidence based approaches.

The medical reviews Dr Cass has been instrumental in initiating will also be vital.

Binglebong · 28/07/2022 20:33

Coldilox · 28/07/2022 18:01

I doubt others here will agree with you. But it seems to be a step in the right direction, trans healthcare is woefully lacking, and the waiting lists are insane. It needed a massive overhaul at the very least.

I hope your DD gets the treatment she needs

Everyone I have seen comment on MN is rejoicing. We want better health care for gender questioning kids - we believe (as others do) that Tavistock is doing harm. There should be far, far better care for them that explores all elements of why they are questioning and does not assume that since the magic word trans is said that it is the only problem there. We know that many are gay, that many are autistic, that many have been abused, and that thinking they are trans gives hope of fitting in when that is not the problem. We want people to feel comfortable and confident in their own body without undergoing harmful, untested treatments that will leave them medicalised for the rest of their lives. We know that some people referred there will be trans and they need support, but we also need to prevent ones who aren't from having unsuitable treatment and the ones who are to have the best treatment possible.

We are celebrating because we want trans people, and those who think they may be trans to have good health care. And at Tavistock they aren't.

Rinatinabina · 28/07/2022 21:18

It is so important that children have appropriate healthcare when considering this path. Hopefully a more holistic model will mean that children are assessed properly, mentally, emotionally and physically and that other problems are explored fully before progressing down a path that is impossible to undo.

I hope your DD gets the right care for her OP. As a parent I’m sure you are relieved that she will hopefully get a much better standard of care than the one offered by GIDS.

VestaTilley · 28/07/2022 21:20

It’s great Tavistock is going - it’s a basket case, and soon the law suits will be flooding in.

But YABVU if you think your DC should transition and get puberty blockers - do you have any idea what havoc they wreak in young bodies?

exwhyzed · 28/07/2022 21:22

I heard David Bell on LBC at about 17:20 about this and he gave a fantastic summary of the concerns.

Felixsmama · 28/07/2022 21:28

Tavistock are rushing puberty blockers instead of practising evidence based interventions. Gender dysphoria should be investigated and treated holistically as the report says.

Plumtreebob · 28/07/2022 21:38

@Binglebong AMEN!

HouseOfGoldandBones · 28/07/2022 21:40

The care that distressed children received from the Tavistock was unsafe, so great news for your daughter OP.

Hopefully they'll receive the best care, which fully examines the best course of action for her in a timely manner.

We all want children to receive the best, evidence-based care, which has been sadly lacking up to now.
