To be so glad Tavistock is being replaced.

So Tavistock is shutting down and being replaced with two new clinics. I’m so glad - DD 14 has been on Tavistock’s waiting list for 2 years and now there will be a better opportunity for her. Such a win for young trans rights Flowers

No further contribution from OP, posting for screenshots? I hope our replies haven't been too disappointing.

Physically mutilating mentally ill children. Sure, what a great move to shut down one failing institution and replace with two more.

The media has been interesting on this and pulling together some of the history for it.

This is the latest from the Telegraph. Of course, if you search the archive sites you might find an archived version.

What is also coming to light is that parents who had concerns were treated abysmally as well as staff.

So, yes OP, it is a very good thing that new centres are being set up, to only provide evidence based treatments and that will have to operate with transparency and accountability.

However, I am very surprised however to see Mermaids do yet another sleight of hand maneuver to make out that they had concerns other than the length of waiting lists. Considering their unwavering support of affirming only and medicalisation of teens, this does seem very dishonest of them, don’t you think OP?

I agree.

this whole thing has been allowed to run rampant for years and has the idea pushed down the throats by do goofing parents.

I believe there is a very small percentage of people who feel this way, other than that being trans if in fashion, focused on by autistic children, coaxed into what to say by this clinic to get medical treatment.

I also think that if these new clinics have to also provide accurate warnings about the risks of the medications they are suggesting, that would be a great start.

I mean, how long ago was it that Polly Carmichael from GIDS said on the Leo documentary that Puberty Blockers were reversible? Not long ago. And yet there is a plethora of evidence to the contrary. Particularly for use in females.

Here is a new side effect published by the FDA just this month.

Six young females experienced this in the USA that were recorded. The adverse health risks of these drugs to the female body is so often hand waved away so as to not disrupt supply for males. I have seen it on MN enough to be absolutely appalled to see clinicians repeating the same tired old trope.

So yes. I am all for complete and full transparency going forward for the negative side effects of these drugs and these procedures. The constant narrative of downplaying those effects is very harmful to a generation of young people.

Weirdly worded op, and no further comment?

We all know what OP’s motives are. Stir up crap.

Gender questioning young people getting more appropriate, well evidenced, holistic care is a good thing. It’s a victory for children’s rights whatever their gender or sex.

OneFrenchEgg · 29/07/2022 09:03

@sst1234 yep, looks like it.

passport123 · 29/07/2022 09:06

yes hopefully your daughter will receive much more holistic care which will review her physical and mental health as a whole, rather than just being put on the puberty blockers/hormones conveyor belt. I wish her well.

LastTrainEast · 29/07/2022 10:57

Despite some people on social media trying to make it seem like an activist win it's a win for people who care about children.

The replacement centers have a different purpose. Not to increase numbers of trans at all costs, but to find out what the child needs. That is most often going to be a little therapy/guidance. Either to get girls past the stress and confusion of puberty or to help boys and girls come to terms with being gay.

Because there will be several centres if one gets captured and starts churning out huge numbers of 'trans' it will be obvious at once.

I'd like to see enough capacity so that children can be seen quickly before things get too bad for them.

LastTrainEast · 29/07/2022 10:58

Now if we can just introduce schools to the idea of "best for the child"

One can only hope the likes of eg Mermaids are kept well away from the new clinics.

I actually imagine Mermaids will pretend that they have been lobbying for better treatment/better data/localised healthcare the whole time.

Except anyone with a brain will see that what they actually did advocate for was extremely dangerous and under-evidenced. And that the voices on this board and elsewhere ringing the alarm weren't just horrendous pearl-clutching bigots wanting to deny trans people healthcare. I hope the new clinics provide really robust mental health support to determine the right, personalised treatment for every child.

OneFrenchEgg · 29/07/2022 20:43

Mermaids on Twitter are definitely framing it as a win. I think a holistic approach for any symptoms is such a good idea. It's never good to approach a clinician with a fixed idea in mind. I suspected ASD in one of mine for example but was open to exploring symptoms / presentation. Turns out ADHD is similar.
