To ask why her credit on phone keeps draining ?

Got DD a phone last month, PAYG 3 network. Put £10 on it last week amd got the data pack. Today it's run out of credit. Seems only to last a week ?
She rarely uses it for calls or texts, only Internet but even then its just whataspp or Facebook. She doesn't stream videos or anything.
Can anyone shed any light as to what's going on? I can't afford to keep topping it up so often yet she needs the phone

And also in the app it will tell you how much data and minutes remains on her bundle.

BoredatHome321 · 28/07/2022 15:52

Out of credit as in can't call, text and use internet or just can't use internet?

PattyMelt · 28/07/2022 16:05

I have DD's phone on SIM only deal, 25GB a month for £10 a month with Tesco.

Meraas · 28/07/2022 16:11

dementedpixie · 28/07/2022 12:15

She has a plan - £10 for 16GB!

Okaaaaay, a monthly plan. £10 for 16gb one off is a bit rubbish.

StrangeCondition · 28/07/2022 16:13

OP HAS A £10 DATA PLAN!!!!

The question is, why is her DD going over THE PLAN in a week if she's using WiFi wherever possible?

Meraas · 28/07/2022 16:16

She said it was a credit that has drained.

Calm down dear.

That’s a normal amount, probably less than what I’d spend. You need to buy a plan. I’m on giffgaff pay as you go and they do ‘goodybags’ for £6, £10, £20 a month etc

This.

giffgaff are amazing. £25 per month for unlimited everything. Never any extras and no contract

PickAChew · 28/07/2022 16:20

It will be always be checking stuff. I have payg on my secondary phone and keep the data turned off unless I want to use it, as credit does get used alarmingly fast.

PickAChew · 28/07/2022 16:23

It doesn't use 16gb, mind. I have a, 3 sim only contract with 12GB per month on my main phone and sometimes barely touch it with constant use, including as a hot spot.

alnawire · 28/07/2022 18:00

That is the monthly plan. It has run out.

TokyoTen · 28/07/2022 18:52

You should be able to look on the app on her phone and see what the money is spent on. I'm with Tesco mobile and pay £7.50 a month - you can see what you spend on calls, data or texts. That may help identify it.

keepingwarm5623 · 28/07/2022 18:58

Has the phone recently had an update? My DCs phone suddenly ran out of data 2 days after the start of their monthly contract period. An update had changed some settings so apps were now auto updating, etc and Wi-Fi assist was enabled. I switched it all back to what they said they usually had on and haven't had a problem since.

Riapia · 28/07/2022 19:39

She may be using wi fi at home, what is she doing when not at home.
Sounds like that’s what’s using the data.

BobSacamono · 28/07/2022 20:12

Could it be location tracking being permanently switched on too? I know that drained batteries on DH’s old Android.

whataloadabullocks · 28/07/2022 20:31

Hi Op, I use three mobile. Two things; although it says it's out of credit can your dd still text? I ask because 3 mobile do a really weird thing. When you top up you have to listen to all the options. You choose the data and text/ message plan you want. You press the deal you want to purchase and then enter your voucher details. It then sends you a text to tell you your balance is £0. But you then have a month to use the credit.
Alternatively either you or DD haven't actually purchased a plan and just topped up (very expensive) each time you top up you have to chose your plan it doesn't do it automatically.
I've been with 3 for a while now and I can chose £10 a month which gives me 4gb and unlimited texts/ phone calls. I'm not aware of the 16gb plan which makes me think you might have purchased a data only sim? Therefore texts and phone calls are going to be ££££.

If your dd has an iPhone you easily reduce data by going into setting, then data settings and switch everything off.
I have found on the couple of times I've forgotten to buy a plan and just gone Paygo it's eye wateringly expensive.
I'm finally changing to a different mobile company as 3 is no longer the bargain it used to be.

lovemelongtime · 28/07/2022 20:46

I got SMARTY, pay 5 a month, unlimited data and texts. You get money back each month what you don't use.

dementedpixie · 28/07/2022 20:49

@whataloadabullocks 3 has a 16GB pay as you go deal for £10

To ask why her credit on phone keeps draining ?
saraclara · 28/07/2022 20:59

You say it's run out of credit. Well it will have because you used it on the data pack. But that shouldn't matter if she's only using data. It will matter if she wants to make calls or sms texts though.

Are you saying that the data has run out? Because that's nigh impossible in a week. So maybe there's another reason she can't connect to phone data? Has it accidentally been set to only work on Wi-Fi in the last day?

saraclara · 28/07/2022 21:01

Also did you buy the data pack as son as you loaded the credit? Because if you sent a single text or made a test call first then you'll have had fractionally under £10 when you tried to buy the data pack, and it won't have worked properly.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/07/2022 21:32

I had similar with my DD when she got her first phone.

She'd accidentally clicked a link that signed her up to a game, which took €2.99 every x days - fast used up credit.

I stopped it via an opt-out message & was actually able to get back most of the money. They know well it's a bit of a swizz, she'd no idea she'd signed up for this by clicking a link. She did get a confirmation text (how I figured it out), but she didn't understand it.

Check this.

Valeriekat · 28/07/2022 22:06

Mobile data is 2 quid a day just for having it on. Calls and texts 1 pound a day even if you just send 1 text.
They really dont want you to use PAYG!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 28/07/2022 22:11

If she mostly uses wifi at home something is up.

I'm always using my phone, playing Spotify, Netflix, streaming, Whatsapp etc and I very very rarely go over 1gb a month. 16gb so quickly when she's also running it off the house wifi seems ridiculous.

I'd speak to 3.

TinaTeaspoons · 28/07/2022 22:44

I think it may have been my fault.
I bought the 16gb bundle but don't think there was enough phone credit on there when I did this, so maybe should have topped up and then converted to a bundle...

So she never had the bundle in the first place!!!

TinaTeaspoons · 28/07/2022 22:50

Well I thought she did but now I am thinking not. The phone was topped up with £10 but as I say, a week on, she could make no calls, not use the Internet and when I tried to make a call on there myself, was telling me the credit was too low.
I'm just confused. Probably should get onto 3 to get to the bottom of it.
