Got DD a phone last month, PAYG 3 network. Put £10 on it last week amd got the data pack. Today it's run out of credit. Seems only to last a week ?
She rarely uses it for calls or texts, only Internet but even then its just whataspp or Facebook. She doesn't stream videos or anything.
Can anyone shed any light as to what's going on? I can't afford to keep topping it up so often yet she needs the phone

I bought the 16GB bundle for £10 last week. Said it's expiry date was end of August yet here we are, out of credit again.
Phone connected to home Internet so makes no sense.

That's odd. Dd is constantly on her phone, YouTube WhatsApp etc and uses around 15gb a month...

midgetastic · 28/07/2022 10:53

Look on the phone and see how much mobile data she has used and what applications

It's easily possible with a lot of video stuff

Ducksurprise · 28/07/2022 10:53

girlmom21 · 28/07/2022 10:42

There's no way she's using 16GB data that quickly. Speak to 3. Maybe the data plan isn't being properly applied.

It's very easy to use that much data.

We found that the phone switched to mobile data whenever the home broadband was a bit slow. Disable mobile broadband when at home.

girlmom21 · 28/07/2022 10:55

@Ducksurprise not if she's only using WhatsApp and social media.

Randomthoughts992 · 28/07/2022 10:58

well im on giffgaff and its 20gb and everything else unlimited £20 a month or full unlimited £35 a month

i find the £15 pack a month good for me as its Unlimited UK calls and texts and 30gb data and no contract

Mammma91 · 28/07/2022 11:00

£10 a week is a lot of money for a top up. Myself and DP use giffgaff, we’re on £10 a month goody bag. Always lasts the month, sometimes use £15 for more Data. Maybe have a look for better deals with a different provider. I left three in 2016 because of their hiking prices!

chocolateoranges33 · 28/07/2022 11:04

Take a look at Tesco mobile sim only monthly plan. I pay £13 per month for 100GB data and lots of call time and texts (cant remember how much but its a lot) for my DS & DD. Much better value than a PAYG sim.

I also have added a £5 buffer which means they can never go over their data or minutes allowance by more than £5 so there are no unexpected bills. Its never happened though as their allowance is so generous (& they live on Snapchat, TikTok etc)

burnoutbabe · 28/07/2022 11:05

Settings show what apps are using mobile data
I have everything like YouTube to say CAN NOT ACCESS IF NOT ON WIFI

efeslight · 28/07/2022 11:13

YouTube does use lots of data, i didn't know you could set it to only use on wifi, thanks for the tip

It's definitely possible. Facebook videos auto play for example, so do reels. WhatsApp settings can also mean photos and videos get downloaded automatically.

You need to have your settings so you can't access apps via mobile data and have Wi-Fi assist switched off. Also check individual app settings so that videos etc. don't automatically play when you scroll past them.

JustAFew · 28/07/2022 11:32

Streaming videos from youtube/sending pictures or videos via whatsapp no using wifi/shes not let friends hot spot her data has she (where she allows a friends to latch onto her phone using another phone when they are together and they are using the data up)?

ive just moved over to VOXi (vodaphone) on a monthly rolling contract which atm is offering 30mb for £10 a month - i think it ends today. Dead easy to swap over

It's not a normal amount if she mostly uses WiFi. £10 can last me months.

With all due respect, it is a normal amount. You're the outlier. I used to work in telecoms and most users would spend at least a tenner a month.

Just because it's normal for you, doesn't mean it's normal for the other 68 million of us.

I only have 1gb a month and mine lasts with Internet browsing. She can't be connecting to house WiFi automatically.

Aposterhasnoname · 28/07/2022 12:07

3 have a sim only £24 month contract with unlimited data for £11.50 a month. I’d go with that if I were you.

Aposterhasnoname · 28/07/2022 12:07

That should say 24 month contract not £24 month

MrMrsJones · 28/07/2022 12:10

I'm with utility warehouse and pay £10 a month for my phone and £15 a month for my daughters.

That's unlimited text, data and calls

Meraas · 28/07/2022 12:12

Get a plan. I pay £3 for 2gb data per month (plus unltd calls and texts) I then have a block on the account so we can't spend more than £3.

It's a no brainer. No one uses credit anymore.

IRanOutOfDishwasherTablets · 28/07/2022 12:12

I use more than 1gb a month on MN since there bloody Carol Vorderman/Annabelle Karmel advert

She has a plan - £10 for 16GB!

FlemCandango · 28/07/2022 12:18

Make sure she has mobile data settings on her phone turned off at home so she is only using WiFi. I find due to patchy WiFi signal that my phone goes onto mobile data if the signal drops so it might be using mobile data when it shouldn't.

jc12689 · 28/07/2022 15:24

You should be able to use the settings to see which apps are using the data. There could be so e background processes that are using the data, which you can set to update on WiFi only

Blackdiame · 28/07/2022 15:29

On android Check in the settings>connections>mobile data>data usage. It will tell you which apps are using how much data.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/07/2022 15:31

Make sure her mobile data is turned off and is definitely connected to home WiFi
If she uses phone at a friends for example if parents allow her the password it will auto connect there
All my visitors have my WiFi connected and I'm happy to share

Sartre · 28/07/2022 15:38

I didn’t realise credit was still a thing tbh. I pay for a sim only contract for DD, £8 a month and her data never runs out.

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 28/07/2022 15:47

Are you certain you aren't mistaking this £10 you put on as credit as actually credit as opposed to topping up £10 and this £10 going straight off the balance to pay for the package bundle.

My ds bundle costs £10 a month. I "top up" £10 and this pays for him to have unlimited calls and texts and 5gb data for the month (on EE).

So he doesn't actually have £10 to spend on his balance. It's automatically spent on the package deal that I choose.

You should be able to get the app for 3 and create an account for her number and see the usages.

Calling credit isn't really a thing in the more modern phone sim only Bundles.
