Energy bill price cap predicted to go to £3850 - 3 x what it was a year ago

There is an AIBU here - but really it's posting for traffic

Russia is having 'maintainance issues' so has reduced the gas flow to Europe to a low level.

Gas prices have soared again.

Price cap prediction - £3850 - about 3 x what it was a year ago.

This is going to affect all of us

It’s shocking because it’s a rise in:

  • energy prices

  • food prices

  • fuel (although have seen in come down a couple of pence last couple of days!)

  • mortgage rates

  • rent prices

  • costs of insurance - for anything!

  • and wages are stagnating at best and falling at worst.

And it doesn’t matter who is in power in any country - they don’t care. It’s a race to the bottom.

I’m training my dogs ready for the impeding collapse of civilisation - ie they can swim, carry a small back pack, hunt and are super obedient - not trained to attack the rich (yet)🤣

A couple of our insurances have gone down

DistaffSide · 28/07/2022 10:43

I heat 24/7 at a steady, low level to use the thermal mass of the very thick solid walls of the house. The energy use is much lower than trying to heat up twice a day and it's better for the boiler and cheaper. Not heating would lead to condensation and mould.

More advice on energy use and insulation that's appropriate to different house types would be helpful. I've heard a lot of cavity wall insulation in modern properties has caused problems with mould and rusted the internal wall ties, with removal causing more problems. The industry warned that this would be a problem but grant schemes went ahead.

Who says fossil fuels are rare?

I wouldn't use the term rare but we do have a limited supply. There are different figures floating around but it is generally accepted that we have less than 50 years worth of gas and oil left.

You also have to take into account the EROI (energy return on (energy) invested. Years ago oil was easily accessible, the cartoons showing characters drilling into the ground and oil cascading out wasn't too far from the truth. As we have burnt through supplies we are having to put more energy in to reach the remaining oil. As we get closer to a ratio of 1:1, 1 barrel of oil expended to get 1 barrel out it becomes pointless.

I wish my fire place wasn't boarded up.
I wonder how many homes have real fire places nowadays.
It would've helped a lot.

I've got a log burner but I don't think that wood is really any cheaper the gas

lightand · 28/07/2022 10:45

likeminded · 27/07/2022 22:51

The problem with the Government is they think printing money solves every problem. Unfortunately for them they can't print a finite resource such as gas or oil and they are going to have an unprecedented problem on their watch that can't be solved however much money they throw at it! They are going to need a new paradigm unless they want riots.

In turbulent times, goverments can end up changing every few months.

QueenWatevraWaNabi · 28/07/2022 10:45

I'm not sure what your point is - my point is that there are plenty of people who are incredibly wasteful of energy. No, I'm not worried about them

LivingOnAnIsland - I'm so sorry 🙈 I misread and thought this was a 'back in the day everyone was cold; we're too used to heating now; if you're worried then be like that one person wearing shorts in the snow and using their oven once a week; people just need to toughen up etc etc'. Apologies.

I wouldnt call them rare either, hence my post.

Plus calling them finite - well there is only one world so that is a given.

The real point is is there enough. Or enough for those that want it. Well we havent run out yet!

lightand · 28/07/2022 10:52

You are suggesting we dont use the 50 years now, so that there is some in 50 years time?

Who knows what will have been invented/found/made cheaper in 50 years time.

I am always a great believer in the here and now.

lightand · 28/07/2022 10:54

Do you think we have found all the oil/gas/coal in the world? Really?

They could cut the green levy to help people out for a start.

How very short sighted.

Apart from those in special circumstances, extra expense or doing without is worth it to save our planet. As Greta Thunberg said, we will all die soon if we don't look after the planet. Luckily, those in power took notice.

If our government had any balls, that green levy would be double. Roll on the days when the Green Party and Lib Dems hold the balance of power.

If you're fit and healthy, layer up and eat more raw foods.

We live in a rural area and go out after a windy day to collect what's lying around. Saves us a good few days of central heating over the winter

PeloAddict · 28/07/2022 10:57

BarbaraofSeville · 28/07/2022 03:42

Based on the screenshot posted above by @PeloAddict the actual costs are £36 pm for electricity and £25 for gas so its likely she's using up credit on her account.

But a demonstration of how the monthly direct debit figure is not the same as how much your bill is, so something people should be aware of.

That's my actual annual cost
I pay £60 DD but obviously I get it's fixed on the rate not the DD Grin
At the minute I'm using the lower amount (£25 ish electric, £10 gas) because well, summer
And I've always been stingy with making sure stuff is turned off etc

No. I would suggest we use what we have left into researching alternatives. I personally don't think it is fair on future generations to sit in shorts and t-shirt with the heating on max whilst consuming at ridiculous levels.

Fundays12 · 28/07/2022 10:35

As a scot who worked in the oil industry for years I am wondering why they are not tapping into the oil reserves we have (which are still substantial). The nuclear and wind energy we have.

Exactly

It does feel like it's deliberately being made as expensive as possible

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2022 11:04

North Sea oil was meant to be our savior once , what happened there ?
It is scary how much it's going up by whatever your circumstances or income.
You can't get blood out of a stone and many will just end up not paying it
The 400 is welcome in October, but for many it won't go far enough.

Yes and use the profits they are making to do the green research instead rather than fleecing the customers

Rookiemistake · 28/07/2022 11:10

Not sure if it has been mentioned already but I don't understand why energy companies are allowed to make such large profits:

www.theguardian.com/business/live/2022/jul/28/shell-profits-record-households-cost-of-living-us-economy-gdp-business-live

Here we all are debating about putting extra layers on and these fuckers are making billions. They are profiting off others misery. It shouldn't be allowed.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/07/2022 11:13

nannybeach · 28/07/2022 08:07

This is what happens, when a country which only produces a small amount of the global CO2, listen to the greens. Close the nuclear power stations, dont allow fracking, or use the oil we have under our oceans. I have an article written August, 2013, saying energy bils would treble in 10 years, I kept it, because it was regarding solar panels. It is nothing new, it WAS predicted!

You’re only talking about co2 production here. Since we import so much, we must also consider co2 consumption too. Because if we don’t, then we’re simply offshoring our emissions to other countries.

Fundays12 · 28/07/2022 11:14

lightand · 28/07/2022 10:38

@Fundays12
There is much that could be done in this country, energy wise.

The powers that be[and I am one who subscribes to the theory that we and other countries are not always working to the country's best interest, but another group's best interest] dont wish for it's residents to have the cheapest energy.

Totally agree but they don't do it. I did read an article that said BJ and Nicol's sturgeon had words as he told her that oil reserves are opening up again. Little nippy isn't keen on this idea apparently 🙄

bluenameblue · 28/07/2022 11:17

very worrying

JS87 · 28/07/2022 11:20

Where I work the air conditioning/ heating comes on automatically at 7am every day regardless of whether there is anyone using the room or not.

Museya15 · 28/07/2022 11:24

The thing I find shocking is that they are allowed to make zillions out of our misery. If they are profiteering surely they should reduce their prices? I'm unsure how it works tbh.

altmember · 28/07/2022 11:24

Yet the UK is currently pumping it's own supply of natural gas out to the EU as fast as it possibly can. EU countries are stock piling gas reserves in preparation for the winter and all we can do is help them, whilst digging our own hole deeper.

That's disgusting when the UK citizens need it

How is that being allowed?
