To think that the film Bohemian Rhapsody….

……portrays Freddie as being absolutely captivating?

The days of Queen were when I was very young so although I knew of them (my mum liked them) I never paid much attention to them.

But I watched the film earlier and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, I couldn’t look away from him. The Actor who plays him is fantastic but I just can’t get over how arousing, mesmerising and sexually alluring he portrayed Freddie Mercury to be.

My mind feels blown!

Is that actually what Freddie was like?

I thought the film was abysmal. Genuinely wondered if I were watching a Spinal Tap-esque spoof. Shocking lead performance and a dreadfully hammy narrative. The film company ditched the original director half way through and brought in Dexter Fletcher (who did an outstanding job on Rocket Man).

Thought the film was insulting to the rock god and one in a million performer that was Freddie.

I think Bryan Singer was the original director who was got rid of because he and Rami Malek clashed so much. Singer wanted to concentrate the film more on Freddies sex life and not as much on the music, Rami didn't want that. That's what I remember reading at the time anyway

Noone can match him...his vocals are sublime and he has such a stage presence. Queen are such an amazing band.

CallOnMe · 27/07/2022 21:14

I am a massive fan of him and not only love his voice but also his story - an immigrant who escaped war, came to this country, was gay but had very strict religious parents, married his best friend and stayed best friends even after they separated, had a whirlwind success and then succumbed to AIDS which had such a stigma attached to it.

I think he’s amazing and what I really love is like a PP said in interviews he’s pretty shy and quiet but then on stage he’s this massive character.

And that voice!!

And it’s all natural.
He smoked like a train, drank and took drugs.
And when he’s on stage it’s all him - no fake recordings like you have nowadays.

I thought the film was amazing too and apparently the actor spent hours and hours getting every part of his movements right.
Theres a side by side of the fake one and real one and it’s amazing.

I was not a queen fan and I am still not a fan of their music. However Freddie M was a true showman, Live Aid is the perfect example. He was classically trained and respected by his peers. Not sure why people find him creepy. He may not be to everyone's taste but he was bloody good at what he did and performers like him sadly would not have a place these days. Watching his performance of Barcelona with Montserrat Cabelle (sorry for spelling) is spine tingling and she certainly would have not dueted with him if she did not rate him as a performer. The film was a bit shite though.

Chugalug21 · 27/07/2022 21:17

Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Freddie first, I've wondered what he would have been like, but still think Rami Malek was amazing.

Dexter Fletcher used to be on gamesmaster and Pressgang! and is now a superb director and producer, mad.

I think he was absolutely beautiful

I miss George Michael too :(
He had a beautiful voice and was a bit of an outsider , the music industry in general were pretty shitty to him really :(

A friend of mine used to live next to George and said he was a lovely man - really quiet and kind and nothing 'showbizzy' about him in the slightest.

Silverfinch · 27/07/2022 21:23

Too much artistic licence in the film though. He never behaved like that at any press conference, and the timeline is completely off - he may have suspected at the time of Live Aid that he was HIV+ but the diagnosis came a couple of years later.

Cocolapew · 27/07/2022 21:24

DH is actually watching it now, tbh looks a bit shit to me but I've never understood the Freddie/Queen love 🤷

I’ve posted this before but this video of them singing The Golden Boy (far superior song to Barcelona in my view) is an utter delight. The sheer joy and adoration on Montserrat Caballe’s face makes me cry every time m.youtube.com/watch?v=OPizyP4x30I

I think the fact he is being so well remembered and spoken so highly of three decades after his death (that is a guess as I don’t know when he died) is phenomenal.

Can you imagine being dead for so long and yet still be remembered so well and spoken of with such praise. I can’t imagine what it must be like to mean that much to people.

That’s some legacy and it speaks volumes.

Yes he was.

BigFatLiar · 27/07/2022 21:37

Amazing performer but his private life was a bit of a mess until he found his partner.

Valeriekat · 27/07/2022 21:41

@Perplexed0522
Freddie Mercury was incredible live.
Sweet and funny.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 27/07/2022 21:04

Freddie was gift to us all.
So we would always have epic songs and vocals entwined in good memories

Yes I felt that too. Nicely put.

NymphInYellow · 27/07/2022 21:45

I love Queen and Freddie was wonderful 💔

I haven't seen the film but I always considered FM to be one of the most unattractive men I had ever seen. I never found him captivating or mesmerising in any way. Just didn't get it at all.

Have you ever actually seen him?

willstarttomorrow · 27/07/2022 21:47

@TerryIsAllGold that is wonderful, thank you. Two amazing performers with total respect for the other. How amazing it would have been to see them perform! Just such a legacy left by both.

As to the 'creepy' comments- lazy homophobia. A flamboyant gay performer, who when out of stage persona was a shy man not allowed to be his true self. Unfortunately the music industry has not really moved on when it is considered keeping people in the closest is good for sales.

Lomex · 27/07/2022 21:54

I loved the film and I thought you could really tell that people who cared for Freddie had had a strong influence in its making. It would have been easy to smear him for some of the sex stuff. I remember reading up after watching it how he married his best friend and even after he came out he always made sure she was looked after and inherited from him, and it was that which persuaded me he was genuinely lovely.

shinynewapple22 · 27/07/2022 21:57

I really enjoyed that film - a lot more than I expected to.

bluegardenflowers · 27/07/2022 21:58

If you watch a documentary on Freddy Mercury in his own words, he is hugely sexy, vulnerable, fin and louche at the same time. Sorry I don't know the name but he is even better in real life.

Funkyslippers · 27/07/2022 21:58

My DD and I loved the film and Queen in general. My DD however feels that the film makes FM seem quite moody!

bluegardenflowers · 27/07/2022 21:58

Fun (and funny) not fin!

WiseRobin · 27/07/2022 21:59

The film is awesome and I can only imagine Freddie being just like that.

I cried when he died, it was so tragic.

Nugg · 27/07/2022 22:02

I'm old enough to have seen him live and been at Live Aid and yes. To us, his adoring public he was amazing. Probably as difficult as he is portrayed in private.
My first love was George Michael. Broke my heart when he died. His recent live stream was amazing!
