To have thought washing up liquid would replace a dishwasher tablet?

As above. No dishwasher tablets, but lots of washing up liquid.

Kitchen now has a gremlins/stranger things vibe.

AIBU to let in continue on the wash or should I stop and save the kitchen from the land of bubbles?

You do know bleach kills bacteria and viruses @Thinkingblonde therefore it does clean in many instances? That said, for the majority of things, hot soapy water works perfectly well.

Yes, it does kill bacteria and viruses but it doesn’t actually clean as in removing grime and grease. If the dirt isn’t removed the bleach with kill bacteria up to a point but the dirt is still there.

Can someone tell me if it was just a joke telling op to throw butter in?

No, the butter is grease and will 'use up' the detergent. (really technical explanation that)

greenacrylicpaint · 27/07/2022 12:47

stop it.
squirt a bit of oil or throw in a chunk of butter/marg. that will kill the bubbles.

my friend (ahem) might have done similar...

for future reference - put dishwasher on without detergent. dishes will be ok-ish the once.

kimfox · 27/07/2022 12:49

Omg - no! I did this once when I was selling a house and had a viewing! God knows what the prospective purchasers thought when greeted by a bubble pit Ibiza would have been proud of.

Thanks @CatherinedeBourgh

Been there done that.

WHY does washing up liquid foam up so much in the dishwasher?

SleepingAgent · 27/07/2022 13:16

MomwasCasual · 26/07/2022 22:16

Oh bless you.

Either stop now, OR dig out your skimpy bikini, Ecstasy tabs, glow sticks and whistle, and party 90's Ibeefa-style for the next eight hours.

And post a pic of you raving in the sea of bubbles!

CbaThinkingOfAUsername · 27/07/2022 13:34

I've done this before, ran out of a dishwasher tablet so used fairy liquid in the dishwasher, kitchen ended up like an ibiza foam party.

I found it didn't clean properly either. But on the upside, my kitchen floor had a really good clean after me spending ages mopping up all the bubbles!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 27/07/2022 13:36

If you are fond of an Ibiza foam party, carry on.

Wotaloadofshit · 27/07/2022 13:37

Oh OP definitely stop it and pray for rhe best.

We did this at work once thinking it would be fine and only new there was an issue when water came through the ceiling. I think the bubbles had stopped the water draining so it all just leaked out everywhere instead.

Rach000 · 27/07/2022 14:13

We used to do this when I worked at a pub when I was young. As they didn't always have the dishwasher solution!! We later found out the managers were using the cleaning budget for themselves.
Anyway we were usually OK if we just added a small amount of washing liquid but added too much a couple of times and had bubbles everywhere. Think we just tried to scoop as much as we could into the sink to get rid of. It was pretty funny and we didn't really care as it wasn't our houses.

WHY does washing up liquid foam up so much in the dishwasher?

because it is agitated by the water coming out of the wizzy round thing.

Washing up liquid does not need to foam, but people don't like washing up liquid without foam.

Haha...loving this story.. good luck in the morning OP. You do only ever try this once - after years of our house being a perpetual building site, we finally invited all and sundry (including sister and her family from abroad) over for a fancy meal, to show off our lovely new open plan kitchen diner with all the latest gadegtry. And DH decides this is the moment he will try out the fairy liquid in the dishwasher trick. Empties half a bottle, HALF A BOTTLE!!! in to the ruddy thing! You can imagine the scene - foam absolutely everywhere, had to usher everyone out of the kitchen and shove em in the small living room. Needless to say it was DH on his hands and knees mopping up that mess..
