I come from a socialist family, we had striking miner's kids living with us for respite during the strikes. However, the railway unions are taking the pee aren't they? Transport workers aren't the only people taking a hit right now. What about the 100's of thousands of hospitality, leisure, carer and charity workers in bars, cafe's, restaurants, theme parks, swimming pools, hotels, campsites, working in supporting all our children and elderly relatives etc that are getting between tiny and zero wage increases yet have no option but to carry on and make ends meet. Why can't railway workers see the problems they are going to cause and why can't they see that they are IN THE SAME BOAT AS EVERYONE ELSE (except the wealthy obvs).

YABU - striking railway workers are more deserving of pay increases than the rest of us

YANBU - we need to pull together and see every member of society through this and not cause each other harm

I like the 'fare-free' strike approach, where the workers still work but refuse to charge any fares and let people travel for free on strike days.

Still impacts bosses and gets general public on-side.

Ncfreely · 26/07/2022 20:16

Embarrassing yourself here

liliainterfrutices · 26/07/2022 20:16

And yes, I’ve been massively inconvenienced and put out of pocket by the rail strikes. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t support them. It means we should hope for the best pay and conditions for these people who are offering a service we want to preserve.

Livpool · 26/07/2022 20:17

ChilliPB · 26/07/2022 18:04

Them striking doesn’t mean they’re more deserving than anyone else. It’s not a race to the bottom!

Exactly! I hate this idea

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/07/2022 20:18

BigDayToday · 26/07/2022 20:04

Of course I'd support this. Why not?

Seriously?

You'd happily not feed your family because of this?.

Yes I like the idea of this type of action. However, a lot of people buy tickets in advance . . . 🤔

if they're not happy about their wages (which they're not, mass vacancies in all these areas you mention) then they could strike for a payrise - they can join a union and ballot to strike

Topgub · 26/07/2022 20:20

@VeniVidiWeeWee

I think you're being a bit over dramatic

No one would starve if supermarket workers went on strike in a similar way to rail workers

ivykaty44 · 26/07/2022 20:22

then suggest that to your union, put it to the vote as always

How long are you planning to strike for?

Despairingof · 26/07/2022 20:25

if you truly come from a socialist family your parents would be very disappointed in this view. They are taking their legal right to strike

Northernsouloldies · 26/07/2022 20:27

Do MPs suck up hardship and poverty... No they are on that gravy train of privilege and expenses where they barely have to touch salary to live. Typical Conservative govt trying to set worker against worker.

WidgetDigit2022 · 26/07/2022 19:29

I work in a school where we're all chronically underpaid. Like, entry level salaries even though I have a degree. Shall schools strike? No?

Totally agree. There are many professions out there who deserve much bigger salaries and benefits.

I thought teachers were debating a strike?

Jackanackanory · 26/07/2022 20:28

The need from some people to punch down is depressing. I don’t care what industry you’re in, if you’re being shafted over pay and conditions then I wholeheartedly support your right to strike.

There were loads of teacher strikes 10-15 years ago when I was at school.

My parents have never been disappointed in my strive to question everything, to find new, better, more effective ways at improving people's quality of life. They positively encourage thinking outside the box to further the rights of the masses.

I just feel there must be another, more collective way to improve our society than types of strike which harm other working/in need people rather than the people they are aimed at.

Are there going to be picket lines and protests outside the homes and offices of these rail company CEO's? I hope so.

nojudgementhere · 26/07/2022 20:33

I'm 100% behind the railway staff and will be supporting nurses and teachers if they strike too. If their pay/working conditions aren't improved then the recruitment crisis is only going to get worse and we will all suffer.

CactusFlowers · 26/07/2022 20:35

None of us should be sucking up that we’re getting poorer and conditions worsening.

We should be supporting those prepared to stand up for workers rights.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/07/2022 20:37

Jackanackanory · 26/07/2022 20:22

I'm not. But 3 days and you're fucked.

tootiredtoocare · 26/07/2022 20:37

How do you think we got the employment rights we have now? No one gave them to us, they were hard fought for by unions and general strikes. The RMT are carrying us all right now.

MomwasCasual · 26/07/2022 20:38

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/07/2022 19:37

Yep. Supermarket workers are not paid that much.

Let's go on strike so you can't get food. Anyone still supporting us?

Yes, I would.

liliainterfrutices · 26/07/2022 20:27

I thought teachers were debating a strike?

Both large teaching unions are going to ballot, whether they can get the kind of support rail unions have im not sure, many teachers are completely against strike action and many will struggle to afford to lose pay while on strike.

BloodyCamping · 26/07/2022 20:42

For the skills, training, unsocial hours, level of responsibility, emotional drain, care workers need better pay. Could work at Aldi for more

locomocol · 26/07/2022 20:46

I can buy food in other places though...

I absolutely would.

Retail staff are appallingly paid and some retail employers treat their staff appallingly.
