Who is BU? DS's hair cut

Who is BU? Parent 1 or Parent 2. I will try to present both as factually as I can.

Parent 1: (to DS, 11yo) we need to go get your hair cut. (It's longer than normal, his hair is curly and thick so it gets bushy pretty quickly)

DS: I don't want a haircut. I like it this way.

Parent 1: Ok. But you need to get it done before school starts.

DS: Yeah, ok. I'll probably need it done in a week or two.

Parent 2: (to DS) No. It's too long and looks messy. Go get your hair cut.

DS: I should be able to choose how I want my hair.

Parent 1: (to Parent 2) I agree with DS. It's summer holiday and there's nothing pressing he needs to look smart for. Let it grow for now.

Parent 2: (to Parent 1) There are standards that should be upheld. Why don't we just let him get away with everything? Let's just let him parent himself, he doesn't need us. You're not parenting him, you're an absent parent. You're being neglectful.

Ok, it's probably pretty clear which parent I am but this is what was said, almost verbatim, minus the ensuing argument.

Who'd send their kid to a school like that

Someone who doesn't have the luxury of being able to pick and choose the schools their children attend?

Someone who does have this luxury, and chooses a school with very strict rules regarding dress and general appearance?

Someone who wouldn't ask judgy rhetorical questions?

There could be all kinds of reasons which don't merit that kind of response, @AllThingsServeTheBeam

Well I think you'd have to try really hard to find a school that won't allow boys with long hair in this country.

That's a very silly thing to say. I would hardly have said what I said if there were no such schools in England, and if my children hadn't attended them (I'm assuming that you are referring to England when you say "this country").

I didn't say there were no such schools. I said you'd have to try very hard to find them. And yes England. The year 2022 not 1920

There are loads of schools out there with rules about long hair on boys. You honestly don't have to try that hard to find them!

Your husband is a bit of a cunt. Does he usually talk to you like that?

Goldencarp · 26/07/2022 20:01

My son hair is the same. He’s been growing it for months. It looks awful to me but it’s not my hair!

Is that not sex discrimination if girls are allowed long hair?

Macon · 26/07/2022 20:16

@dementedpixie My children went to single sex schools, so there wasn't any discrimination. Their schools all had very strict rules about appearance and uniform.

Not if they're single sex schools.

Sounds grim
My 2 were/are at schools that don't have archaic rules about hairstyles and whether you have the correct socks on.

Not sure there are single sex schools where I am

Thank god I don't live in parts of England you do then because even the private school here you can have long hair and a lad. I think it's absolutely disgusting that they can't if I am honest.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 26/07/2022 21:37

How is it sex discrimination if it's the same rule for every student that attends there?

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 27/07/2022 15:45

Wow. I didn't expect this to turn into a bun fight about schools. Come on, folks. Horses for courses.

So everyone would be ok if a girls school had the same rule? Short back and sides?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 27/07/2022 16:49

Both parents are being unreasonable as they both want to impose their haircut choices on the child, it's just the timetable they disagree on. It should be up to the child as it's his hair. My 9 year old DS has waist length hair as it's his hair so his decision.
