To eat croissant with butter?

novocaned · 24/07/2022 08:41

We’re in France and I’m enjoying a wee swipe of butter on my morning croissant. I KNOW they’re made with a shit ton of butter already but I just think an extra bit of salty creamy French butter takes it over the top. DH muttering about heart attacks as he nibbles his poor man’s breakfast. Who IBU?

Apricot jam for croissants and strawberry jam for scones. Slightly salted butter for both unless there's cream (scones only). Marmalade for toast obvs.

The sort of women who, I f they have behaved like this 100 years ago would have been institutionalised as incompetent, or in the language of the day, simple. But now, oooh, aren’t I funny, ditsy, mad me, or just plain incompetent. It’s becoming unbearable.

I'd rather be friends with her than you

liveforsummer · 24/07/2022 10:12

Who on earth eats croissants WITHOUT butter. I didn't know that was even a thing. Often I have butter and jam though.

Supersee · 24/07/2022 10:14

@midsomermurderess treat yourself to a croissant. You sound like you need it.

liveforsummer · 24/07/2022 10:15

@midsomermurderess if it's unbearable then why click on the thread and subject yourself? OP is probably just relaxing and having a browse on mn before getting on with her day.

SpiderVersed · 24/07/2022 10:17

Butter of course! French butter is delicious.

AdaColeman · 24/07/2022 10:49

Stab the croissant lengthways through the thick part, push some pieces of plain chocolate into croissant. Heat the croissant. Eat the croissant and the warm drippy chocolate. The perfect start to any day.

novocaned · 24/07/2022 14:37

Thanks for backing me up, fellow butter lovers.

Absolutely WILD that I’m simple/incompetent/ditsy for browsing MN and starting a chatty thread.

Gah! If you stay in a French hotel they serve them with butter and jam. It is the only way.

Borgonzola · 24/07/2022 14:46

My partner always purses his lips when I add butter but it really makes them. When my family had croissants when I was young they just had them plain, and adding butter and jam was a real revelation. Have what you want!

Though my aunt used to spread choc chip brioche with butter and marmite Confused

EV117 · 24/07/2022 14:48

I take it he feels the same about pies and pasties too? Pastry is just meant to be eaten on its own?

ArabeI · 24/07/2022 14:48

Of course you're not, OP. Many of us like this sort of chatty thread.

I'm tempted to try a savoury croissant now. I've spotted them in cafés before but always opted for plain.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/07/2022 14:49

If I'm in France, wd always go for roules au fromage rather tan croissant - never seen them in the UK.

Oestrogelsmuggler · 24/07/2022 14:49

You can never have too much butter.

Sweatinglikeabitch · 24/07/2022 14:51

Buttered and microwaved for 30sec is the only way to eat one.

HRT can really help, you know?

Who spends their time on holiday asking mumsnet what they should eat for breakfast?

I personally think it’s a refreshing thread!! (Although I’ve never put anything on a croissant!!!)

MomwasCasual · 24/07/2022 14:53

President butter and a light scraping of apricot jam

Or

Halved, topped with grilled gruyere and caramelised onion

Or

Stuffed with cream cheese, slivers of smoked salmon and sundried tomatoes

OneTC · 24/07/2022 14:53

What's the point in eating then without butter?

Purplepatsy · 24/07/2022 14:54

Slightly warmed with butter and peach confiture. Bonne Maman do a good one.

newtb · 24/07/2022 14:58

Btw, thé ham/cheese croissant from m'y local is a slice of ham with béchamel sauce with cheese, topped with grated cheese that's then baked.

Try the savoury croissants, they're every bit as good as the sweet ones. Also try the local patisserie's pizza squares.
I so want to go to France now.

CashmereMutt · 24/07/2022 15:02

i asked for butter to go with my croissant in a little cafe in Lisbon - the server expressed horror at the request - when it was already made with butter - he begrudgingly gave me a little pot. I wondered whether my request was so terribly unreasonable …it seems not ☺️

LemonadeSunshine · 24/07/2022 15:23

salted butter and bonne maman strawberry jam, Mmmmmm

RightOnTheEdge · 24/07/2022 21:21

I like this thread OP! There's nothing wring with light and chatty!

I have always had them with butter and jam but now I want to try a ham and cheese one!
