The SCAFFOLDERS called today

This is Post 4, and is in AIBU to follow the others.

Post 1, neighbours nasty builder
Post 2, scaffolding eventually taken - by wrong firm
Post 3, scaffolding back, and then mysteriously goes again.

I don’t expect anyone has followed my previous posts closely enough to remember the details, but the scaffolders’ boss gave 2 dates for collection, one to my neighbour and the other to my husband. Today is neither of those dates.

Fortunately I was in the kitchen and saw them arrive, so they didn’t take me by surprise. I recognised at least one of them from when the scaffolding was put up.

I have been practising my ‘wide eyed innocent look’ in front of the mirror. I am not a competent liar and often my face gives me away if I try. The look was coming on quite nicely, except that sometimes when I glanced sideways at the mirror I seemed to slightly resemble a duck.

Anyway, they knocked on the door

Scaffolders: “We are here for the scaffolding”
(Put on ‘wide eyed innocent face’ )
Me: “Scaffolding?”
Scaffolders: “Yes, it was in your garden”
(lightbulb moment as I remember the few pieces originally left behind)
Me: “Ah yes, it’s in the back garden, follow me, it’s ok you can come through the house”
Scaffolders: (looking at 2 boards and some pole protectors) “Is this all there is?”
Me: “Yes” (slight questioning head tilt)
Scaffolders: “What happened to the rest?”
Me: “Already gone, these bits got left behind”
Scaffolders: ( looking a bit disappointed) “that won’t take long to remove”
Me: “No, should be a nice easy job for you”
Scaffolders: “Hmm - there’s no one in next door”
Me: “Oh, ( shrug of shoulders) probably at work”
Slightly awkward pause
Scaffolders: “Is there anywhere around here to get some coffee?”
(Ah! I gave them drinks and cake last time)
Me: “I’ll make you some coffee”
Scaffolders look happy
Me: “I don’t have any cake today though”
Scaffolders look a bit crest fallen
Me: “I did make some ginger biscuits earlier”
Scaffolders look happy again : “We like ginger biscuits”

Anyway I gave them coffee and biscuits, and they sat at my table in the shade for a few minutes. They were just as funny and entertaining as last time, and were laughing about some ‘near misses’ in their work, which actually must have been quite scary at the time.

They went off happily to take down my neighbour’s scaffolding, and didn’t ask any awkward questions. If they knew about the issue with the second scaffolding company they didn’t mention it.

They were just finishing when I left my house to go shopping, and one came up to speak to me.
Scaffolder: “The boss isn’t sure who collected your scaffolding”
( quickly readjust features to wide eyed innocent face)
Me: “Really? How strange, surely he sent them?” ( getting a bit cocky now)
Scaffolder: “Can you remember what they looked like?”
Me: “No sorry, I didn’t see them”
Scaffolder: “No worries, thanks again for the coffee and biscuits”

He then walks back towards the others and I overhear him say “She didn’t see them - did you notice she looks a bit like a duck?”

That was several hours ago, and I have heard nothing more. Fingers crossed that this is the last I will hear.

Wow, go you OP. What a satisfying end to a PITA of a scaffolding nightmare drama.

Well they say things go full circle, and in this case it’s true. My first post started after I’d told my neighbour’s builder to ‘go away’

This saga, or at least me posting anything about it, ends with me doing the same to the boss of the scaffolding company.

I was quite enjoying some of the light hearted duck jokes on here when he phoned me. My neighbour gave him my number ( without asking me) as the missing scaffolding had been on my property. Thanks neighbour for throwing me under the bus!

Apparently scaffolding company number 2 were supposed to collect the scaffolding, but didn’t even attempt to do so. He didn’t check with them until today.

He tried to say I was responsible for the items, I told him he was being ridiculous.

After a fruitless, pointless, conversation my normal standard of eloquence deserted me when he said he would sent me a bill. I told him to F Off.

I am now cursing my lack of a quick comeback. I wish I’d said “according to your staff I already have one”

Anyway I assume the matter will now either go away or go some form of legal route. Neither of which are even vaguely entertaining, and not something I can write about in a light hearted way.

I’ve had a great time sharing these events,
and I have loved many of the comments. Thanks, it’s been a blast!

I've followed every post and found your stories entertaining.

mostlysunnywithshowers · 22/07/2022 21:11

Wow. Just the gall of some people.

Do you think maybe it's a well rehearsed scam?
Dump unmarked 'possessions' and building tools on neighbours property, have them 'taken under cover of darkness', and then try and somehow bill the unwitting landowner for theft?

Well, you waited far longer than I would have to tell them to fuck off!

You're not liable in any way and if they do try it on with an invoice, go to the police and report them for fraud, keep them busy.

And have a chat with neighbour 1 about what your phone number can and can NOT be used for, cheeky mare!

I don’t know if it’s some sort of scam but I do know that neighbour 1 will have to get a court order to get any access to my garden in future.
I can’t believe that after all this she tries to wash her hands of the problem and tells the scaffold boss to phone me.

OP posts:
FrippEnos · 22/07/2022 22:35

If he rings again tell him that you thought that he sent his workers to get the scaffolding.

I suspect that he won't bother as this sort of thing happens a lot and it will be insured.

Hi OP, I've read the whole saga and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The last update was a bit of a Debbie Downer but in your shoes and if (Whilst in your shoes) I had a good whack of spare cash, I would be getting a solicitor to draft a letter along the lines of 'hey fuckface your property abandoned on my property is not my fucking problem and if you ever contact me again regarding this matter or any other matter I will take you to court for harassment and claim against you for the stress that your lack of care of your property has caused me'.
Except in legalese and minus the swearing.

That's what I was expecting thread 4 to be. This is going to be the never ending story.

Tiani4 · 23/07/2022 09:41

That's outrageous

Am I right in understanding
You asked them repeatedly to remove scaffolding
Someone took it
Then his company without permission- returned and abandoned their property on your land
You contacted them multiple times to remove it and that it had no permission to be there
You did not touch it nor move it
As promised by NDN and his company someone collected it
Now he claims they were not that someone

It was abandoned property that had no right to be on your property

You had no duty of care towards it

His company are harassing you

Block his number

Send his company a C&D letter- maybe get some legal advice first

As far as you are concerned his company has been harassing you

His company should have insurance for their equipment and he can make a claim on it
Now if his insurance company sounds out later he has fraudulently made a claim for loss of equipment as they had re-abandoned it without permission on property/land they had no right up store it on and nothing to do with a job long ended, then he will get in trouble. So it's not in his interests to pursue this at all.

Tiani4 · 23/07/2022 09:43

The last bit is really to keep to yourself but just noticing that it's all between him and his insurance company as his company has no right at that point to dump scaffolding into your land and should have removed it immediately when contacted.

Also love the duck face look from practising your straight face in the mirror! Grin

Ooh there’s a Mumsnet sub?

I just had a quick look at it - might well be the most tragic thing I’ve ever seen on the internet. A place where posters gather to laugh at MN threads whilst slowly drowning in their own self-congratulatory bile.

bellabasset · 23/07/2022 16:01

As you neither ordered or used the scaffolding but was in fact vastly inconvenienced by it perhaps you need to he the one sending the bill

I missed the deleted thread, so can only guess it’s a group of ‘under bridge’ dwellers.

I agree! Well done OP.

TruthHertz · 24/07/2022 00:55

I'm a bit confused. Were there the nasty builders? They sounded alright from your first post in this thread. The scaffolding that was pinched prob cost them thousands.
