To expect knickers to last

BEAM123 · 21/07/2022 18:53

Just that really.
I'm quite tight careful with money.
Invested in 12 pairs of super-comfy M&S knickers last year and 4 of them have developed holes where some seams meet - it's the same place on all of them so obviously a manufacturing flaw.

I wash them on a fairly low temp with other soft things, hang them to dry, and am not doing any strenuous activity in them.

AIBU to expect them to last more than a year? 😁

I think the quality has gone down, although I'm never quite sure if that's just because I'm so old now I don't realise how long I've had things.

Titterofwit · 21/07/2022 18:59

It would be worth asking for the whole lot to be looked at given the repeated fault. They need to know if it is a manufacturing fault and thee is a code on the label that tells them how old things are so should be able to see they arent old in knicker terms.
Ive got some from years back - from Next and still going strong. Year old ones are still in the 'new' bracket to me .

katseyes7 · 21/07/2022 19:00

I've got M&S knickers (well - garter thongs) that l've had for 20 years. Although l do have a lot, so they get 'circulated' and not worn to death.
The black ones have faded, a few went into holes (all around the top elastic) fairly recently, and l've had to bin them. The faded ones are fine for wearing at home, still in one piece.
But l think you're right. The quality isn't what it once was.
They stopped making my favourites a while ago, but l've managed to stock up on a few multipacks from ebay. I'm getting on a bit now, so they should see me out. Hopefully.

I have jumpers older than some of my colleagues 😁. I checked my online receipts on these, and it was definitely last year though!

I’m usually an M&S girl, but have bought a few sets from fat face or white stuff in the last year, similar styles ie main pants cotton but with decorative lace around the top. In all of them the lace tears. Just seems incredibly wasteful, both financially and environmentally.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 21/07/2022 19:05

I stopped buying knickers from M&S years ago as they just didn't last.
Struggling to find any that last a year.

lightisnotwhite · 21/07/2022 19:05

Yep I have pants from eons ago that last years. I have noticed that recent pant have come away at the seams too.
I am wondering that maybe I just used to change underwear more because I was out more of an evening. I lost/ lent/ grew out of more underwear than I kept.

Marinated · 21/07/2022 19:07

Bought a multi pack of the M&S 'No VPL' and they all fell apart within 2 months. Quality has definitely dived!

Hawkins001 · 21/07/2022 19:09

I guess make em cheap and sell em cheap

Wherehasthecommonsensegone · 21/07/2022 19:30

My M&S ones have been the same, some within a month, it separates at the top seam bit. Very frustrating but glad to know I’m not alone. I was starting to think it’s something I’m doing wrong.

LakieLady · 21/07/2022 19:43

I bought some M&S knickers last year and the elastic started to come away from the top after a few washes.

When I had a close look, it appears that the elastic is sort of glued on, rather than stitched. What kind of stupid idea is that?

Royalbloo · 21/07/2022 19:45

YANBU - got some a few months ago and they're falling to bits

SloppyHousekeeper · 21/07/2022 19:55

I bought some nice ones a year ago. I decided to treat myself to 6 pairs that were double the price of the ones I usually buy. Within weeks some of them looked really bad because the elastic was coming away. I was very disappointed because I am on a low and expected them to last a while.

Velvettia · 21/07/2022 19:57

I don’t buy from M&S anymore, the quality is shit. I’m trying to find the ultimate replacement though.

Inthesameboatatmo · 21/07/2022 20:05

I always got my knickers from M&S but the quality has gone downhill rapidly. I switched to uniqlo a couple of years ago and those are still going strong.

SunshineThelma · 21/07/2022 20:09

I found exactly the same with M&S ones. Side seams coming apart and elastic along the top coming away. Found some pretty decent replacements in John Lewis. They have scratchy labels that need to be cut out, but so far they're holding up well.

justhereforthisthread · 21/07/2022 20:11

The last set of knickers I bought from M&S were awful. They were thin and just didn't fit well.

I now buy from John Lewis. Similar style but much better quality.

Roselilly36 · 21/07/2022 20:13

Yep, I agree, quality is poor now. I always used to buy M&S knickers, been so disappointed with the quality of the last few packs I won’t be purchasing anymore M&S knickers.

RoseLavenderBlue · 21/07/2022 20:26

I’ve always bought my knickers from M&as, in particular the high rise shorts (cotton/Lycra) with the lace around the edges that wore well and washed beautifully. They always used to change the colour way or pattern every season, as well as doing them in the usual white, black, and beige. Now they don’t appear to do them anymore. I don’t want microfibre or lace, just cotton with Lycra. As a change, I bought a multipack of midis, tried one pair on and the elastic around the legs was so scratchy and leg hole was tight. What a waste! Saw some midis at Tu online that had good reviews for comfort so bought some. Had a pair on for about ten minutes before I had to change. When they overlock the side seams they seem to finish off the end in like a ‘ball’ of thread, and it had a sharp bit that was digging in. Again a waste of a multipack. I just want some comfy pants!

justsaythanks · 21/07/2022 20:38

Yes. I treated myself to m and s pants and they're saggy and baggy. Awful
Reading to see if anyone has found decent ones!

user1487194234 · 21/07/2022 21:00

I still like M&S pants
But I buy 6 new pairs twice a year

Honeyroar · 21/07/2022 21:04

I used to always buy M&S everyday bras and knickers, but I stopped five or six years ago as they just went poor quality. Asda do things just as good for a lot less. They still get holes after a while, but at least they’re cheaper.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 21/07/2022 21:06

I knew this would be about M & S. They're pants just fall to bits. It's Uniqlo all the way for me now.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 21/07/2022 21:06

their

skybluee · 21/07/2022 21:46

One year isn't OK, especially considering say if you wear them once every two weeks... that's not many wear times.

I've found the Tesco ones to be good, surprisingly.
