To expect knickers to last

Just that really.
I'm quite tight careful with money.
Invested in 12 pairs of super-comfy M&S knickers last year and 4 of them have developed holes where some seams meet - it's the same place on all of them so obviously a manufacturing flaw.

I wash them on a fairly low temp with other soft things, hang them to dry, and am not doing any strenuous activity in them.

AIBU to expect them to last more than a year? 😁

As someone who is currently wearing a pair of BHS knickers YANBU.

(Just checked BHS shut down in 2016 so they are at the very least 6 years old, but I know they are from about 2009/10 so 12/13 years old).

allboysherebutme · 21/07/2022 22:29

John Lewis knickers are good. X

MummyFoxy · 21/07/2022 22:32

I gave up on M&S knickers too. Bought some recently from Next, which is somewhere I would never normally think to go to for underwear, but the quality is surprisingly good, much better than M&S of late.

Stylishkidintheriot · 21/07/2022 22:32

I’ve had the same problem with m&s pants. I also have pants from BHS that I bought in 2001 that are going strong

LaingsAcidTab · 21/07/2022 22:34

I used to work in the clothing industry for a short time. The problem is cheap, poor quality cotton. It is becoming ubiquitous.

I stopped buying knickers from M&S years ago as they just didn't last.
Struggling to find any that last a year.

Sloggi, multipacks from The Sock Shop, often cheaper/multi buy/more in a pack than elsewhere.

PinkButtercups · 21/07/2022 23:14

Mine have holes at the seam too but not sure if it's because it's holding in my gut and I burst it 🙃

justasking111 · 21/07/2022 23:23

Bought a multi pack from Primark. Cotton granny knickers. They're two years old now so impressed bought another pack months later. Both sets are still like new. They're washed at 60

Minoloso · 21/07/2022 23:26

I used to love M&S knickers - best pack I had was a pack of 5 cotton black tanga’s. Now they are dreadful, you can get the same quality, (if not better), in Primark. I’ll probably go to Uniqlo next time.
It’s such a shame, thousands of women must be shopping for their duds elsewhere now after years of being loyal. Not great business sense M&S!

Atomicspider · 21/07/2022 23:34

Cheap cotton and weird new inflexible elastic that tears off?! So many good pants have gone this way. It’s like brexit and COVID have robbed us of knicker elastic.
I found a pre National-knicker-demise pack of tu knickers the other day in an old suitcase . What a luxury compared to the latest version. Gorgeous cotton, stretchy elastic , great stitching. It was like Christmas until I realised they were also my pre covid size :(

Blush21 · 22/07/2022 07:21

Sainsburys, M&S, Tesco etc all the place I buy multipacks from have gone to crap in the last 2 years, every pair has holes on the waist band or legs. I’m yet to find somewhere that has good quality knickers age a reasonable price

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 22/07/2022 07:28

I nearly posted a thread similar to this about socks too. Socks used to last me a long time - but the socks I have bought recently seem to develop holes within a few months. And I've had the same issue with knickers.

Short of knitting my own socks (which might happen yet), does anyone have recommendations as to where to buy ones that last?

I’ve found exactly the same - doesn’t seem to matter where I buy them from at the moment, first time I wear them and the stitching between the body and the edging seems to rip or just simply not exist. In desperation I bought some
from Amazon at £15/pack of 4 pairs made by a company called Wirapa and they are so comfy and fit so well I think I’ll invest in some more later in the year!

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 22/07/2022 07:31

The best knickers are from Primark. I get the lycra ones and they last forever.

PoorMegHopkins · 22/07/2022 07:32

Wirapa or Innersy on Amazon. Lovely thick cotton, good stitching, different styles. They aren’t super cheap but I’m very impressed.

Footbal · 22/07/2022 07:34

YANBU, was only thinking this myself. I seem to be constantly buying new knickers as they just don't last..

Dogmum40 · 22/07/2022 07:37

I’m having this issue at the moment, my last lot were from Asda George, because I struggled with M&S sand they’ve been great

I need to replace them again now as they are a few years old and starting to look worn, and now Asda ones are crap, sloggies are so uncomfortable, next aren’t great quality and fat face ones have fallen apart after two washes! Looks like it’s commando for me going forwards 😆

I will look at John Lewis though so thanks for the tip 👍

Pugdogmom · 22/07/2022 07:39

Having bought knickers from every shop , I find the Primark ones last the best and fit better on me. And comfier. M and S are awful.

redhearts · 22/07/2022 07:47

I bought a new 5 pack from M&S a month ago and there is already a hole in one pair between the gusset and the knicker fabric at the front

FourChimneys · 22/07/2022 07:52

Maybe I've been lucky but I bought a couple of multi packs from Sainsburys about 3 years ago and they are still as good as new.

I agree about socks though, they have really deteriorated in quality.

HouseofHolbein · 22/07/2022 08:21

I bought seam free from primark as cheap running knickers. They are absolutely brilliant so I bought more. Had them about 3 years now and they still look and feel fine

TheOrigRights · 22/07/2022 19:23

I'm more curious about what temp the op washes her pants on. She says "fairly low". I'm not a "boil you towels" person, but knickers need more than 30c

Ooh, it's the knicker sanitation police! 😂
It varies but between 20°-40° and I know what my knickers have been through and what they need. Instructions say 40° and modern detergents are quite effective. And don't worry, I don't wash them with my teatowels!

Atomicspider · 22/07/2022 22:45

Washing at high temps is bad for the world , 30 is fine for everything

EntertainingandFactual · 22/07/2022 22:56

I buy the black cotton ones with lace at the top from M&S. I’ve had loads of them over the years but one pack went back because the first two pairs I put on (new) fell apart as I was putting them on. The lace band came away from the cotton knicker.
Not happened since so could have been a dodgy batch.
I bulk buy once every 1-1 1/2 years.
