To ask if this scoffing at the concern over the heatwave have changed their minds yet?

Just that really. I've just watched the news. The houses burning, the grass fires, the rail infrastructure buckling. Record temperatures in 29 locations today. Several areas exceeding 40 degrees. Do you still think it's 'hysteria' to take it seriously?

I agree with you about the heat. However, these smug, told you so posts are irritating.

This. ^ So irksome.

And yeah there have been urban fires which are rare, and a new record heat, but apart from that, it's been no worse than every heatwave ever, (in the UK.) 1000s dying indeed. Hmm The media scaremongering was fucking ridiculous! They should be ashamed of themselves, the way they got people whipped up into a frenzy!

And I don't understand the 'I told you so' type posts because as I said, this heatwave hasn't been much worse than all the others over the years.

colouringindoors · 20/07/2022 00:03

Ostrich and sand spring to mind.

A few urban fires

Er, no. London Fire Brigade has 100 engines out on wildfires and declared a major incident as have fire brigades in midlands and norfolk and they're only the ones I know of. Over a dozen homes have been burnt out in Dagenham and Wennington.

The previous hottest day record was broken in 29 locations in England today, highest 40.3, 1.6 degrees more than previous record. That's a significant jump.

Rail lines have buckled, routes closed, roads melted.

This heatwave Has been much worse. And it's just the start.

Sorry, but what makes you think that deaths won’t total in their 1000s?

Normally it takes some time, post-heatwave, for the total to be ascertained.

I 'don't think' the deaths due tom the heatwave will reach the 1000s because it won't.

“Last summer, there were 1,634 “excess deaths” during periods of heatwave conditions, and the death toll in summer 2020 was even higher at 2,556.“

Any reason why this even hotter heatwave should be any different…?

Yes but I have it on good authority from WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps that it won’t happen again. Guess those pesky scientists predicting otherwise will have a lot of egg (gently simmering) on their faces.

Are you saying if the general public had have been more 'concerned' then this wouldn't have happened? If not then I don't really see why Joe bloggs has to waste his time full of 'concern'. I'm sure the appropriate people have plans in place. I don't see the need for everyone else to do anything much less post about their never ending concern all over mumsnet for the last week.

God, this.

This. I take climate change seriously but being told that "THOUSANDS WILL DIE" made me roll my eyes.

More than thousands are already dying all over the world.

onlythreenow · 20/07/2022 03:45

That's such an ignorant post @onlythreenow . Go read about the physiological effects of heat on the body. If you are stuck in a hot home (and lots of people are) then you don't get to choose whether it effects you.

Yes of course - I just live in a country where we have heat like this, what the hell would I know, as opposed to people who have had a couple of hot days. I also have elderly parents, one of who recently had a heart issue - but once again, what would I know?

Incidentally, there was a post of one of these numerous threads from someone in Australia, pointing out that most of their heatwave deaths were from drowning - but what would they know?

Maybe instead of all this bleating and whining you should be petitioning your MPs to do something to help the nation cope with this heat - after all climate change isn't something we just learned about last week.

Glencanto · 20/07/2022 04:18

But again, most of the heatwave deaths in the UK are among elderly people with health issues - do you really think it’s likely that they were all out for a swim?

Jossfromtenko · 20/07/2022 04:26

Nope. Couldn't care less. Didn't in 76 and don't now. Never will.

anonymoooose · 20/07/2022 05:16

@LemonSqueezy0 this is so true.
People think things aren't serious until it actually happens to them.
It could be like an episode of The Walking Dead and they wouldn't see the danger until a rabid zombie is standing in front of them 🙄

SpaceGoatFarm · 20/07/2022 05:33

Ahhh 1976

garlictwist · 20/07/2022 05:37

Here in Yorkshire we had a lot of fires on the moors in the summer of 2018 when it was very dry. It doesn't need to be that hot for fires to start.

Jossfromtenko · 20/07/2022 07:25

Mumsnet always needs something to panic about, remember the outpouring of grief and prepping over Brexit. Some people were so scared they were pickling everything in preparation for the end of days 😀 the world didn't end then and it won't end now. Mores the pity given the state of it.

Kanaloa · 20/07/2022 07:27

@liveforsummer

Oh yes I think I’ve given dioralyte before for diarrhoea. Must make sure I have some in just in case.

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/07/2022 07:38

The only panic on this one was the panicked rush to scoff!!

Look back at the actual threads - especially those in the topic. All very sensible.

Look for frothing, and it abounds in the posts telling people 'don't panic' !!

Very true

Yesterday was the busiest day for the London fire brigade since the Second World War, but according to several suddenly qualified meteorologists it’s just summer and we should all enjoy it.

Brendan May on Twitter nails it.

OneTC · 20/07/2022 12:14

we should all enjoy it.

Honestly I don't care if you hate every second of it. It makes no difference to me. But there's people on here saying that enjoying it is wrong. People aren't enjoying it to spite you

Millions of people die each year worldwide from alcohol, do you sit crying over your pint?

HailAdrian · 20/07/2022 12:23

'Normally.' Exactly, there is hot weather every year and if it's going to get hotter still, we need to get a grip and engage our brains a bit. There's a middle ground between panicking and insisting we are all going to perish and sitting out all day having a barbecue, starting fires.

MarshaBradyo · 20/07/2022 12:31

An easy win would seem to be introducing fire bans as Aus have - with similar awareness and consequences

There was mention of equipment that puts out fire more easily in other countries - whether we should have that

Rail will be expensive and take time to adapt I assume - but consider that

A more personal one for me - think about how we can change our landscape for the better so more trees rather than buy air con

colouringindoors · 20/07/2022 13:25

In the UK homes need to be better insulated to keep the heat out. Windows need to have shutters on, ideally the electric roller ones that are so common in europe. I've spent time in France and Spain and they are incredibly effective. If we can keep buildings inside between 20-25 degrees during heatwaves we can ration the energy guzzling and climate heating air con. We need to educate people as to how best to keep their homes cool.

colouringindoors · 20/07/2022 13:26

Yes re trees- big trees - along streets - provides shade, keeps roads cooler which in term helps the adjacent buildings.
