Please be kind. I'm severely emetophobic and my anxiety is sky rocketing because I think I've just given myself food poisoning.

Basically - cooked mince on Saturday, put it in the fridge cooked. On Sunday added it to a lasagne and reheated in the oven when I cooked the lasagna. There was left over lasagna
(and this is where I was stupid😫), so I put in the fridge on Sunday. Just heated it up in the microwave tonight for my tea. I ate just under half before I realised my mistake - ie eating mince that has technically been reheated twists after cooking.

I'm going to get poorly arent I? 😭 I'm really scared.

As long it's reheated thoroughly it won't cause any bother - try not to worry 👌

Vetiver · 18/07/2022 20:45

Fine with mince, have done it lots of times. I wouldn’t do it with chicken, but lots do and are fine

Thermalpants · 18/07/2022 20:46

You will be fine if it was piping hot. Don’t worry.

BMW6 · 18/07/2022 20:46

Well only those who survived are able to post.........

Seriously OP as long as it was reheated to piping hot any bacteria would be destroyed, so you should be fine.

You are more likely to suffer from the phobia itself.

Okeydoky · 18/07/2022 20:48

I've eaten lasagna reheated like this for over 40 years. Never occurred to me it's a problem. It's never made me ill.

arghstupidmistake · 18/07/2022 20:48

Can I just check ... those who are saying they do it all the time, do you mean:

Day 1. Cook mince in pan and put in fridge
Day 2. Add to another dish and cook in oven. Put leftover in fridge.
Day 3. Reheat leftover.

That's basically what I did.

You’ll be fine —- heating thoroughly, to a high temperature would kill anything that’s make you ill. It’s when people don’t heat the food properly it causes problems.

It's a truly awful phobia.😥

Yes. Exactly that. I think Bolognese tastes better after a couple of days and I mainly make lasagne so that I can eat the leftovers the next day. I'll happily eat them cold too.

arghstupidmistake · 18/07/2022 20:44

Oh phew thank you so much!! You have no idea the relief I feel.

Does anyone know why they say it's not good to reheat twice then? I thought it was the worst sin and a guaranteed way to food poisoning.

I can't remember which TV show it was, but I remember watching something once where they said that the only thing you can't reheat more than once is rice. Everything else is apparently okay, as long as it's heated to piping hot.

I wouldn't go about reheating things over and over and over again, but you'll be absolutely fine after eating twice reheated mince.

Marmite27 · 18/07/2022 20:54

We do it every time we have lasagne. Cook Bolognaise , cool, cook in oven made up as lasagne. Reheat the day after as leftovers.

i wouldn’t do it in a commercial kitchen, but do all the time at home.

Funkyslippers · 18/07/2022 20:54

I'm ok with reheating beef more than once. I'd try to avoid other meats and fish but I did once make turkey patties with leftover turkey, cooked them then reheated some the next day so the turkey had been cooked 3 times. It was fine

Blackmoggy · 18/07/2022 20:56

Only ever reheat once, hopefully you'll get away with it this time.

PandaOrLion · 18/07/2022 20:56

You’ll be fine.
i assume you’re in therapy for the anxiety - use this as an opportunity to talk to them about what you can do differently next time before going down the panic rabbit hole.

pastaandpesto · 18/07/2022 20:57

OP, can I recommend the Emetophobia Manual by Ken Goodman. I have direct experience and it was/is life changing.

Clarinet1 · 18/07/2022 20:58

My understanding is that bacteria multiply at middle temperatures. Therefore it is best to cool food you are going to keep as soon as possible after cooking (but don’t put
it in the fridge while it’s still very warm as this will raise the temperature of your other food). Then, as pp have said, reheat it really thoroughly to kill anything that
may have developed during storage. For instance, when you made the lasagna you would presumably have baked it so that it was bubbling. All of that should be fine. If your leftover lasagna had no or few bacteria in it to start with, a reasonable time in the microwave (until it begins to bubble/pop) should be safe.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/07/2022 20:58

Good grief, I've done this a million times. I'm still alive.

TheTeenageYears · 18/07/2022 20:59

If it's beef mince you'll be fine.

NauseousNancy · 18/07/2022 20:59

I’ve done this loads of times - I’ve even cooked, frozen, reheated and reheated again and never been unwell as a result.

you’ll be fine :)

custardbear · 18/07/2022 21:00

I'd never do this with rice but I think you'll be fine, I personally wouldn't make a habit of this though

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 18/07/2022 21:00

I do it all the time without a second thought. It has never made me sick. Your phobia is making you panic, but in reality you're very unlikely to get sick from the piping hot, homecooked food, you just ate. Even if you did heat it twice.

I think the heating and cooling process (when the food is lukewarm) creates brewing ground for bacteria, which is why reheating food over and over is not recommended. In reality, though, if you heat it in a microwave and then either eat it or put it back in the fridge, it'll be lukewarm for such a short time that the risk is very small.

CallOnMe · 18/07/2022 21:01

I’ve done this loads of times and I’ve never been poorly.
I didn’t actually realise you shouldn’t!!

You do have to be careful with rice but o always reheat rice and it’s absolutely fine!

OverTheRubicon · 18/07/2022 21:02

I wouldn't do it on purpose, but have by accident and been fine, and plenty of others have intentionally done it loads and been ok.

However you are very unwell to have this level of phobia affecting your life. Have you talked to your doctor about it?

Its because generally reheating isn't as hot and long as cooking so doesn't necessarily kill anything that might need killing. However, if you're reheating properly and food is hot enough then unlikely to have issues.

MadeleineBassettHound · 18/07/2022 21:02

I do this all the time.
