If you were going to do an evening course (A Level) what subject would you choose?

I'm thinking of doing an A Level for fun / hobby in the evening but not sure what subject to go for.

Perhaps politics / sociology / psychology

Anyone done these and have any feedback?

What course would you do for fun?

Personally I would do English Lit

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 18/07/2022 20:43

I would do maths or a science.

Bollocks989 · 18/07/2022 20:44

Art or counselling skills

Burnt0utMum · 18/07/2022 20:45

I'd do computer science

Inclinedtochatter · 18/07/2022 20:45

I would do biology. I bloody loved it at school but only did it to GCSE level.

Leggingslife · 18/07/2022 20:46

I'd like to do politics a level too.

Genevieva · 18/07/2022 20:46

I haven't done an A Level, but I did an Open University law degree during the evenings / at weekends while working. I already had an undergraduate degree, a post graduate degree and a professional qualification. I didn't need it at all, but the subject interested me. There were points at which it was very hard work. And it can be hard to get into study mode after a long day. I found the lead up to the end of year exams a bit stressful as my brain just isn't used to revising any more, but I actually did really well. I enjoyed it, but I actually prefer being active when I am not at work and the weather is nice, so I won't do another until I retire.

I have a Sociology A-Level.
It was very interesting.
I'd chose Psychology if I was going to choose one today.

comealongponds · 18/07/2022 20:47

Personally I’d do maths, I’ve always regretted not doing it at sixth form

i did do both sociology and psychology A levels and really enjoyed both, found them both very interesting. I did them at sixth form, not as an adult, but I think both would be good to do at any age

Darbs76 · 18/07/2022 20:47

Out of your options I’d chose politics. I wish I’d done politics instead of Psychology when I went to college. My favourite subject was Law. I only became more interested in politics during my Law A level and now I work for the government and my job involves politicians so I’d had found it a really interesting A level to do

NancyJoan · 18/07/2022 20:48

I would do history. I really wish I’d done it at school, and I’d love to do another degree too.

TeenDivided · 18/07/2022 20:50

Archaeology. I've often thought that in another life that would have been interesting.

SaggyBlinders · 18/07/2022 20:50

I did sociology at AS level. The classes were painful, my teacher absolutely loved himself and was so smarmy that I couldn't bear to keep going. It was at a college so I just stopped going to sociology classes. I turned up 10 minutes late to the exam and still got a high B, but that's probably because I was also doing Psychology and History, which I enjoyed, and so had some material to blag the essay questions with. I also did biology which was interesting but really hard: I worked really hard in biology and still only got a C for AS level. I was actually annoyed that I did so well in sociology with minimal effort!

For me, I would do a language. Or English Literature.

balalake · 18/07/2022 20:52

I'd do French, as it would be of use to me to improve my ability to use the language.

ballonsinhightrees · 18/07/2022 20:52

Politics is really quite technical and boring on the UK side - doesn't really look at political theory or ideology.
I'd do Religious Studies for the Philosophy and Ethics stuff

GCAcademic · 18/07/2022 20:52

Environmental Science or Photography.

Albgo · 18/07/2022 20:53

I did psychology a-level. I loved it - fascinating subject.

Backhometothenorth · 18/07/2022 20:54

Not and A level but I was thinking I might try a BSL course

Violinist64 · 18/07/2022 20:54

I would like to study English Language A level. I did English A level at school but in those days this was English Literature only and finding hidden meanings in texts really was not for me. I have always preferred the language side. I quite like the idea of studying French and German A levels but would definitely need refresher courses first, particularly for German.

Neome · 18/07/2022 20:54

Kernewek 🙂

TheTerfTavern · 18/07/2022 20:56

This is so strange because I have spent the day trying to find out about doing an a level in Spanish

has anybody done this?

LeFeu · 18/07/2022 20:58

Philosophy

CPandme · 18/07/2022 20:58

I’d forgotten what is available List from government website, not sure if it covers all of it them - there’s just one languages. I’d need to start at basic then gcse but would love to learn a language maybe Japanese. I wouldn’t be keen doing distance learning for it though.

if I have to go straight to Alevel then politics

burnoutbabe · 18/07/2022 20:58

Would you be doing it self study? Distance learning? Evening classes (very hard to find)

Also the exams are very much "write this fort of essay" which teachers teach but self study won't help with much.

I did law gcse for fun, considered a level but would need tutors to do well in exams.

(So I did a whole law degree then masters)
SO Be AWARE WHERE THIS MAY TAKE YOU!!

If want an evening class but actually having just looked at local colleges you are correct that evening courses are hard to find.
