Films everyone assumes everyone else has watched but haven't

Sitting like a beached whale in front of a fan resembling the front of a 747 engine, I flickied through the TV guide and saw Film 4 were broadcasting "White Christmas earlier". Someone obviously has a sense of humour.

It got me thinking about films which one would assume everyone had seen but haven't. I have several, the first being White Christmas. I've also never watched:

Titanic
Saving Private Ryan
ET
Silence of the Lambs
and a few more besides.

Are there are films you've never watched which would surprise people you know?

Harry Potter
Forest Gump
Thr Goonies
Stand By Me
The Matrix
Pulp Fiction

The list goes on and on but I have learnt when DP asks me if I have seen XyZ I should respond yes otherwise he makes me watch it at the next available opportunity.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 18:05

It took me three attempts to understand Pulp fiction
It's not a bad film really. One of the better Tarentino ones.
Can't watch the Exorcist under any circs , not a fan of horror films

CounsellorTroi · 18/07/2022 18:11

Never watched

Mamma Mia
Titanic
Any Harry Potter film
Dirty Dancing
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs

MaudieTipstaff · 18/07/2022 18:15

Top Gun
Pretty Woman
Dirty Dancing (friend asked if I wanted to watch it on video when I was about 10 and I thought it sounded rude so went home!)
Star Wars, I've watched bits but 😴

Passtheduchyonthelefthandside · 18/07/2022 18:15

Ha ha looking through these lists and I think maybe there's 3 that I've never seen. Love watching films, watch lots with my son, marvel, thrillers etc. My daughter's watch chick flicks so seen loads of those too.

There's lots already mentioned but the oddest one is probably The Godfather as I've read the book! Is the film as obsessed with the size of people's genitalia as the book?

No @orbitalcrisis the film makes little mention of Santino’s enormous penis and his girlfriend’s enormous vagina.

But so important are they in the book (owing more to sci-fi, really, than gangsters), that I can only assume that Francis Ford Coppola is saving that particular storyline for a sequel: ‘The Godfather IV’ or, rather, ‘The Godfather Phwooooar!’

Gingernaut · 18/07/2022 18:22

Dirty Dancing
Bridget Jones' Second Diary
The vast majority of the Harry Potter series
Most of the LOTR series
Many of the Star Wars series - I can't keep up with all the spin offs, animations and TV series
Most of the Avengers series - same reason as the Star Wars, LOTR and Harry Potter - cannot be bothered to try an keep up with the output

Splicebaked · 18/07/2022 18:27

I've watched and enjoyed every single of the films mentioned so far except The Greatest Showman which I hated and turned off after 5 minutes

ALongHardWinter · 18/07/2022 18:29

I have never watched a single Star Wars film. I have a friend who is a bit of a Star Wars fan,and he is always amazed at the fact that I've never seen any of them. I've also not seen Titanic, any Lord of the Rings films,Back to the Future,or Top Gun. I have zero interest in watching any of them! Life is too short to watch a film that you're not really bothered about.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 18/07/2022 18:31

I feel very firmly that the point of watching films is to be entertained. I'm not remotely entertained by anything ultra-violent, scary, miserable, or otherwise unpleasant.

It's amazing how many 'must see' films just don't strike me as entertaining. So I haven't watched them.

Though I'm as puzzled as the next person why I haven't seen ET.

PoppyDrug · 18/07/2022 18:34

Never watched any Harry Potter, Greatest Showman, the one with Lady Gaga, almost none of the Marvel/DC superhero films, Kill Bill, nothing ganster, Saturday night fever, 50 shades of Grey, James Bond, most Disney
TBH I only watched Thelma and Louise for the first time on Sunday!

Crankley · 18/07/2022 18:40

phishy
Reading lists of films strangers haven’t watched is about the same as looking at other people’s holiday pictures.

Don't let us keep you.

I enjoyed the LoTR books but have never seen the films.

I found ET annoying , the children in it are just awful. It's also filmed from the height perspective of Elliott , which is also tedious.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 18:44

Oh for the days of 'Snappy snaps ' and passing the photos about out of the paper wallet with the negatives in their own little pouch.
These days I get a phone handed to me then quickly taken away again. Or have to check out Facebook etc. it's not the same :(

Pyewhacket · 18/07/2022 18:49

The Godfather
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter - any of them
Avatar
Braveheart
Forrest Gump
Pulp Fiction
Gladiator

Oh yes, the anticipation when you'd sent/taken your film to be developed and the thrill of getting the photos back. Digital is wonderful but not the same.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 18/07/2022 18:54

I've started and given up on The Deer Hunter three times.

TBH I've watched most films mentioned here and there were plenty I didn't enjoy (ET is shit) but I almost found myself compelled to do so. Not so much with modern films but most "classics" I've watched to appreciate their status and get the common references.

Crankley · 18/07/2022 18:55

What about the film the developers may consider a bit risque - always exciting to have to wait to see if they were in the pack of photos lol.

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 18:55

Trouble was, many photos were rubbish done that way , but it was still exciting getting that black roll of film back and paying a lot of money for them! Lol

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 18:58

Sometimes the developers put a sticker over the bad / risqué photos! That must have been a great job to have in those little shops.
Most people's camera skills were sadly lacking especially after a few drinks

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 19:02

@Crankley
‘beached whale’ haha 😭🐳
maybe you could watch Free Willy ?

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 19:04

@ChateauxNeufDePoop
the trick with Deer Hunter is to FFWD the interminable wedding scene (it lasts about an hour) it really does not lend anything to the story except perhaps the wine spillage symbolism
then it’s good after that

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/07/2022 19:20

Never seen beetle juice. DH didn't believe me

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/07/2022 19:22

MumofSpud · 18/07/2022 16:41

Never seen:
Any Marvel film
Any Quentin Tarantino film
Any Matrix
Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile

Apart from pulp fiction and reservoir dogs which are awesome. All other Tarantino films are boring imho

30not13 · 18/07/2022 19:24

Fight club

Watched it for the first time this weekend.
What a waste of two hours! I'm still not sure I actually understand it either 😕
