Neighbour has cut my tree...a lot!

How much is usual? I know they can trim overhanging branches, they've gone right to the top of the tree. I'll see if I can add a photo.

Because it's clearly causing problems for their neighbour, who obviously they don't give a shit about. It's pretty entitled behaviour to have a huge tree overhanding someone else's property and not even give a thought as to whether it may be a problem for them or not!

"clearly ". - really?

"obviously doesn't give a shit" - 🤔 really?

TrashyPanda · 19/07/2022 17:57

Some people are just lazy jerks.

i know a guy who has let a privet hedge grow up to over 20 feet in 30 years. It also encroaches 8 feet into his garden.

Here's one that made the papers recently:

Yep. That's the Mumsnet approved cut. 😁 No need for discussion. All good.

I really can't fathom the stupidity of people who plant trees right at the edge of their boundaries.

How very odd indeed. Are you sure it’s not against the tree owners for failing to maintain their trees and causing a hazard, this would be the norm.

It’s not the owner that did the lopping that made the tree unstable. That’s why you should use a decent tree surgeon to trim a tree, hopefully they’ll know what they’re doing.

Yea, then they can install a hot tub and plastic lawn once the horrible nature has been removed.

How do you know the trees , were planted by the owner! All my trees were there long before my house and probably the neighbours house. Apart from one 45 year old oak which we planted because the council told us to plant it to replace a tree which had a TPO.

Doesn't matter. Someone was stupid to plant them in the first place if too close to a boundary. When you buy a property, you inherit everything, warts and all, and it becomes your responsibility for whatever stupid things the previous owners have done!

Can't fathom the stupidity of people that would hack at a tree like that.

sunglassesonthetable · 20/07/2022 14:05

My neighbours and I love the trees at our boundaries.

However we can't take credit for planting them.

SofiaSoFar · 20/07/2022 14:50

bruffin · 18/07/2022 19:49

Sutton council dont agree with you@SofiaSoFar

also from RHS

"Am I liable if I cause damage to a neighbour’s tree as a result?
Yes. In law you would be considered negligent. Sometimes branch removal can lead to tree failure due to disease, a change in the balance of the tree, or different wind loading that causes the tree to blow over. For these reasons it is important to employ a competent tree surgeon or arboriculturist who could minimise risk and would take on the liability for the work (check they have public liability insurance prior to engagement of services)"

I was replying to what I quoted regarding the shape:

There is also something in the law about the overall shape etc of the tree.

There isn't.

bruffin · 20/07/2022 18:10

@SofiaSoFar
If you cut a neighbours tree so that it damages it, you are liable for that damage, so the shape of the tree does matter

ThreeLittleDots · 20/07/2022 18:13

bruffin You're conflating damage with aesthetics. A tree can look entirely ridiculous and still be healthy.

Mellowyellow222 · 20/07/2022 19:01

in my old house a neighbour had a row of sycamores right against the boundary fence down the side of my house. There was about ten of them tightly packed. I had to keep them trimmed otherwise they would touch my house! All the grass underneath them died and the leaves every autumn were immense!

I was trimming (well within my garden) and another neighbour started yelling at me. She felt I had no right to trim the trees and she felt they gave her privacy! She kept insisting I was cutting them down!!

the next summer she built a six foot high deck right against the fence - no planning permission.

her and and husband were like tennis umpires looking into my garden!

Danielle9891 · 22/07/2022 14:18

They've got a right to cut everything that overhangs plus they have the right to throw the branches they've cut back over your fence for you to get rid of them. Although it would of been polite for them to consult you 1st. But I wouldn't want someone else tree blocking out all our sun from our garden.

Cherrysoup · 22/07/2022 14:31

Chopping trees now =plastic grass hot tub enthusiasts? This place is ridiculous! I removed 7 leylandi last year, they were taking up 1/3 of my garden and blocking the light for 5 houses. I’m amazed nobody ever came round to complain!

StripyHorse · 22/07/2022 14:41

Summerfun54321 · 18/07/2022 13:49

The question is why have you let such a large tree grow so close to your neighbour’s garden? Large overhanging trees and shrubs are such a pain in the arse for neighbours and take time and cost for them to manage.

Exactly this!

And no, as someone else suggested, it isn't because we were getting leaves on plastic grass.

We had a boggy patch along the fence due to it never getting sun.
We lost space in our already tiny garden because the trees overhung so much - and that after we moved our fence further in as it was costing too much to replace damaged panels.
It was a big task to trim them back as they were 4m tall.
And more than anything, the fact so much of the garden was in shade.

Neighbour cut them down 6 months ago - the difference it has made is incredible!

Who was there first , you or the trees!

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2022 15:41

It's not that trees shouldn't ever be cut down or trimmed - god alive.

It's that in the case of your next door neighbour and regarding a single tree such as OP s - it's rude and stupid to brutalise it in they way they have done without a word of consultation or discussion or chat.

And yes I KNOW, it's totally legal and within their rights. But it's dickish. Just like the tree below from the news article.

OP might have been fully prepared to pay for a decent job by tree surgeon.

With Leylandii, you can pretty much be certain the house was there first.

Sparrowonablinddate · 04/05/2024 17:09

It’s only an absolute arse hole that would do that without asking.
