To think it can't be that hot?

I live in the tropics, we have long periods of hot weather. It's winter with us and it's 24 degrees. I'm in bed at the moment with long PJ's on. (At home sick) and will probably spend the day in leggings and a hoodie. Browsing through mumsnet, thread upon thread about how it's too hot to eat, to sleep, people canceling plans because of the heat! Even in the height of our summer (mid to high 30's) I don't think I've ever not made dinner or cancelled plans. AIBU to think it can't be that hot, or have I been away from the British summer for too long?

If you’re the sort of person that complains about heat then anything over 25 degrees is intolerable. Everyone else spends £100’s booking to go to countries that average 30 degrees.
Every single year we have a few good weeks of hot weather. Remember when we we first shut down due to Covid. It was high 20’s for the whole six weeks in the south. Maybe it didn’t beat the record but it felt hotter as it went on for ages.
We’ve only just got through a pretty poor spring and summer. Cool and wet. 2 days of high 30’s before it rains again is not a drama.

AnnaFF · 19/07/2022 09:03

lightisnotwhite I love hot weather when I've got a swimming pool to dip into every 15 minutes.

No-one can possibly know how hot another person feels. Some parts of the country are way hotter than others. I'm back in my office with the air con on so feeling lovely.

I love hot weather here normally, love the Summer BUT where I am it was much hotter than normal yesterday.

LiquidLuck · 19/07/2022 13:12

@lightisnotwhite

You’re describing where YOU live. I’m in Cambs and its been a very dry Spring and hot Summer already. We’ve had 30 degrees multiple times weeks back, not including this weekend, and is very frequently 25+. It hasn’t rained much for weeks at a time. Garden is scorched. I no longer go away to hot countries in the summer as it’s so warm here. So before you start telling everyone what’s an ok temperature for them to feel hot and generalising about the whole of England perhaps check a few facts.

Where YOU are it’s going to rain. Here we might get a shower tomorrow and that’s it for another 10 days with temperatures high 20’s and 30 again.

SleeplessInEngland · 19/07/2022 13:13

The Met Office has said Heathrow hit a new record of 40.2 today, and could go higher in the afternoon.

Thatmaybe the case where you are. I actually can't remember when it last rained and we aren't due any until Friday.

It also hasn't been cool either.

We have lived in tropical climates and really hot climates, however we are all struggling with this heat

SleeplessInEngland · 19/07/2022 13:20

I wonder if there's a name for the phenomenon of records being broken so frequently that idiots people say it's 'normal' because by their warped expectations record-breaking is normal.

Clutterbugsmum · 19/07/2022 13:25

It's also not just that it is 40 degrees today, it's more the fact that at the weekend it was around 27/28 degrees and then we have two days of 38/40 degrees and the tomorrow down to 25/27 degrees. We do not get any time to acclimatise to theses temps as we are having massive differences in temp over a 7 day period.

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 13:32

Just now, in North East England, close to the coast.

To think it can't be that hot?
liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 13:43

You know that's not the official temperature right? Garden thermometers can read 10 degrees higher of more. Temperature is measured in the shade with special equipment that prevents heat bouncing off other objects/the ground etc.

HappyMediocreTime · 19/07/2022 14:07

What I'd love to see happen on the internet in my lifetime, and I'm not sure it will, is to see someone admit that actually, they might've been wrong.

AntlerRose · 19/07/2022 14:09

The met office are reporting of just over 40 in heathrow and london.

So not the northeast, but some bits of the uk have officially been over 40.

LiquidLuck · 19/07/2022 14:10

So specialist equipment like what the BBC news and Met Office use to determine it's OVER 40 degrees?

As a PP said, it's also the compound effect. Despite being only 2-3 degrees hotter today that yesterday it feels worse as the house didn't have chance to cool down. The tiles in my bathroom are warm to walk on and bedrooms didn't get below 28 last night with all windows open.

I'm not a catastrophiser about the heat by any stretch, my DC are still in school and people working where they can but where I live, its dangerous today. Not just the heat but the intensity of the sun. You'd literally be an idiot to claim otherwise.

TuftyMarmoset · 19/07/2022 14:15

@LiquidLuck yup - it’s provisionally the hottest night on record as well as day

liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 14:39

I don't think any of those places have been in the north east though?! Peoples garden and car thermometers are getting posted all over the internet with far hotter temperatures than there actually are in their area

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 14:59

It's not a garden thermometer. It's an expensive and accurate food probe one. It was also in the shade to start but I had to move into the sun to get the pic. So maybe not an official temp but I have no doubt that it recorded the air temp accurately. 😕

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 19/07/2022 15:07

We've just had rain and thunder. I've opened the curtains as I no longer need to keep heat out, I need to let light in! It's really dark.

I'm so jealous right now it's 39 here 😩

Branster · 19/07/2022 15:18

I don't have a fancy thermometer and I can't find the basic one that measures humidity and temperatures.
Weather app says 38C here.
From practical observations: I had a cool shower not long ago, put my dress on without drying at all (loose, light silk dress), with great expectations. Felt heavenly. By the time I got downstairs I was completely dry. In 1 minute!!! 😁
So it must be very hot.
Doesn't actually feel like the end of the world yet though.
My wifi extender got too hot, no idea what it means so I unplugged it as it didn't feel safe to me. I'll wait an hour then start work again as temperature should start dropping gradually a tiny bit.

LoopyLoo1991 · 19/07/2022 15:24

My work laptop has shut down for first time ever due to heat. I'm at BF's place as it's cooler than my accommodation or workplace (was working from home originally). Texted my boss and he says almost all the firm's cut price devices have ceased functioning & to do what I can this evening.
Wrapped it in a bin liner or two and stuffed it in boyfriend's fridge until after sunset :)
Regretting metallic frame on my iPhone now .. using BF's plastic Android phone at moment. He keeps it cool with USB fans & has two more pointed at his games console. Electronic devices are all ridiculously slow in this heat.
I'll just nip over and get some liquid helium from Swiss hadron collider at CERNE lol to help cool them ha-ha-ha.

24 degrees is our summer over here and beach and bbq time here if that gives you an example of what we are used to ha ha

aquatastics · 19/07/2022 15:31

44 degrees showing on my car thermometer just now which has been parked in the shade. This is Putney, SW London. Wind feels like a hairdryer blowing in your face.

LoopyLoo1991 · 19/07/2022 15:38

Tarmac at Luton airport runway melted yesterday. Now that has to be classified at bloody hot!

I agree that the panic is completely OTT. I live in a red zone (Greater London). Yes, our homes are designed to retain heat no- I have insulated lift and wall cavity - and yes it's more humid here but outside heat and sun are the same temp as if we were in 'hotter' counties. I'm English and spent most of my life here but have experienced living short term in a few hot countries (India and Australia)

My family is carrying on as normal - me and my partner are in our 50s:

  • we are both off work intentionally so I'm about to be sunbathing in his garden in central London for a couple of hours with cold water and a good book.
  • partner has been tidying the garden since 8 but finished now. We will have a lovely Mediterranean style lunch under shade in the garden when he's finished. I do help!
  • son is 17 in sixth form Y12. School (London grammar) have said they can wear t shirts and shorts (younger years can wear PE kitand all advised to wear hats until end of term)
Thursday lunchtime when they break up, school will be providing an optional to attend BBQ. Bottles of water are compulsory.
  • daughter is 23 and working from home today and tomorrow. She has a fan near her desk and iced water on tap from her fridge. She's going out tonight for dinner on the Southbsnk if the Thames with her boyfriend.
  • my parents are 75 and 80 and went food shopping at 730am, back by 9 and will stay indoors until this evening, they're fine. My dad will sit in the garden under shade, reading later this evening. Mum will stay inside reading/ doing crosswords etc. she will make a nice dinner without using the oven.
  • I'm meeting two friends tomorrow for lunch in a place where we can sit outside. None of the three of us has mentioned the temp when we've been messaging to organise the meet.
  • my dog has an air con unit in the lounge plus iced water and a cool mat. He's eating/pooing normally and went for a shady walk at 6am and had a dip in the stream. I'll take him again tonight if the temp drops enough. Will make sure the short trip from car to woods along pavement is cool enough for his pads by checking my own feet and hands.
  • my sister, her husband and their two adult children are working from home comfortably. No one is complaining. Neice and her partner will see to their allotment late evening.
  • none of my friends in 'red areas' are bothered in the slightest. It's not been mentioned.

We all go on holiday so know what the heat feels like!

After meeting my friends for lunch tomorrow I shall be sunbathing in my parents garden (I sadly don't have one anymore).

Although I worry about climate change and do what I can to help (I don't drive, not holidayed abroad for 4 yrs, recycle everything I can and avoid plastics as much as poss - solid shampoo etc) I'm glad that we have a couple of days to enjoy real summer.

I really don't understand People panicking about the weather.

Aye right.

does anyone else remember 'FantasyIsland'? 🤣

JustLyra · 19/07/2022 16:18

I do love when people adamantly say they are “carrying on as normal” as of people are being ridiculous then rhyme off a whole list of things like taking time off work, shopping being done at 7.30am and staying inside until the evening.

its hilarious

I'm quite sad we've not had a run down on what timestheyarechanging and all her family are doing today that all us drama llama's aren't.
