To think it can't be that hot?

I live in the tropics, we have long periods of hot weather. It's winter with us and it's 24 degrees. I'm in bed at the moment with long PJ's on. (At home sick) and will probably spend the day in leggings and a hoodie. Browsing through mumsnet, thread upon thread about how it's too hot to eat, to sleep, people canceling plans because of the heat! Even in the height of our summer (mid to high 30's) I don't think I've ever not made dinner or cancelled plans. AIBU to think it can't be that hot, or have I been away from the British summer for too long?

Ohhh, I am at risk... when will my 'care and support' arrive? Will they ring first or just knock...

Softplayhooray · 18/07/2022 19:50

There's been wildfires and some people dead already, so I think it's only right to be respectful of that now. Nature is more powerful than us and we need to stand back and take extra care to help ourselves and others.

AnnaFF · 18/07/2022 20:17

They've banned smoking on DH's golf course incase of fires.

TuftyMarmoset · 18/07/2022 20:22

Wildfire here today too. Actually in woods where we went walking recently and I noted how dry the pine needles etc underfoot were so not surprised by it at all.

worriedatthistime · 18/07/2022 20:56

@liveforsummer the blind advice is sensible and given by profesionals rather than just randoms on mumsnet who aren't hot because they have been dipping in the sea all day
Its 50 upstairs in my house now , just about go open windows and temp outside is slightly down
No hysteria but following common sense advice

worriedatthistime · 18/07/2022 20:56

@Softplayhooray exactly that what I said this morning yet still people who cannot see the bigger picture

worriedatthistime · 18/07/2022 20:59

@Hop27 so fires and people dying is something to just hey get on with
Have compassion that for some this is huge and its couple days not 1 and its been fairly warm for a few day/ nights now so houses are already quite warm here
Spain issues alerts in 40 degree heatwave and most of europe just a few weeks back , where you slating those countries

worriedatthistime · 18/07/2022 21:01

@liveforsummer and of course you sweat of sunscreen and it wares off , hence why you have to reapply or is the back of the bottles wrong too
You haven't sweated as you have been in a cool sea , slightly different than the bin man or postie doing their rounds

I wasn't talking anti the blinds as sole advice - of course it's wise. I was talking a lot the people sitting in behind them hiding from the sun all day. I also didn't say it wasn't possible to sweat off sun cream I said no one out enjoying the sun today was doing so. Also i certainly haven't been dipping in the sea all day - would take more than a few hot days to get me near any British waters without a good quality wetsuit

worriedatthistime · 18/07/2022 21:35

@liveforsummer but some people staying in may be the best advice , I think most people in real life are just doing what best suits them and their needs and getting on with it
Locally here people were filling water bottles for postie and leaving cold ice bottles out for them and bin men etc so just helpful sensible things
Its only on mumsnet I have seen a but more hysteria ,
Although I think this hot weather may of finished my fridge off as can 't get it below 10

broughtitbutneedgone · 18/07/2022 21:44

Yes. And no. There is a lot of hysteria but you're used to hot weather

We aint used to it.

But im not moaning. Im happy to have a summer for once

Oh no I get that, if you are very young or very old. Have a health condition that makes it unsafe bit many people are panicking simply because it's hot and it's the UK when I'm sure if they were abroad they'd be out taking part in trips or at the beach etc, all the time stating it's because it's more humid here (when it's been 25% humidity in London today so practically arid 😆)

AnnaFF · 18/07/2022 22:25

How are everybody sleeping? It is boiling in our house even though we have blinds & curtains closed. 3 fans on. I am laughing at all the comments saying it is not hot. I don't normally sweat but I am now and the dogs don't know what to do.

AnnaFF · 18/07/2022 22:29

Posters who are taking the piss out of people who are struggling are obviously not in the really hot areas and are also thick that it is not just all about them and their experience.

TuftyMarmoset · 18/07/2022 22:30

@AnnaFF we have the windows and curtains wide open now to draw in the cooler air. We also stuck ice packs in the beds to cool them down.

Thank you. I'm worried about the dogs as they don't know what is happening even though I've left so many dishes of water out.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 18/07/2022 22:44

Once it's dark and the air is cooler, open everything and leave it open all night. Then close again before the air heats up. Close curtains to keep the sunshine out.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/07/2022 22:45

It was freezing in my office today - I had to put a fur lined gilet on to stay warm - and go outside to warm up a bit.

We’ve opened blinds and curtains now too, I’ve been ok all day but now I just feel hotter than ever! 🥵 it’s about 28 now having been about 37 earlier. How does it feel even hotter than at 4pm though???

Our dogs are on cool mats and wet towels. They look quite sad. 😔 We’ve got fans pointing at them and gave them a frozen kong a couple of hours ago, obviously there’s water but they’re hot. They just want their walks back. 🐶

Hopd you manage to sleep.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/07/2022 22:49

thermally lined curtaind are closed 24/7 - and a humidifier next to my bed, blowing out a stream of cool damp air, and a lot less noisy than most fans.

PinkButtercups · 18/07/2022 22:52

🙄

How many times until people realise our houses weren't built for the heat...

Wet a sheet and put it over you. It’ll slowly steam dry and in the meantime you might be able to doze off. But it is extremely difficult to sleep in oppressive heat. Maybe just focus on relaxing with as many cooling mechanisms as possible?

QuestionableMouse · 18/07/2022 23:34

25c in my bedroom right now! I bought a garden sprayer thing and keep misting myself in front of the fan. Wonderful!

TuftyMarmoset · 18/07/2022 23:54

29 in my bedroom. It peaked at 30 (37 outside) and is taking its sweet time too cool down! I’d go outside if the neighbours weren’t having one of their favourite midnight bbqs.
