To think it can't be that hot?

I live in the tropics, we have long periods of hot weather. It's winter with us and it's 24 degrees. I'm in bed at the moment with long PJ's on. (At home sick) and will probably spend the day in leggings and a hoodie. Browsing through mumsnet, thread upon thread about how it's too hot to eat, to sleep, people canceling plans because of the heat! Even in the height of our summer (mid to high 30's) I don't think I've ever not made dinner or cancelled plans. AIBU to think it can't be that hot, or have I been away from the British summer for too long?

Climate change is here.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/07/2022 23:31

Anyone who needs to wear a hoodie and leggings at 24 degrees doesn't get to criticise other people about overreacting to weather conditions.

Wombat100 · 17/07/2022 23:34

I have to go against the grain and agree with you OP. Some people have lost their minds about a couple of days of 40 degree heat (particularly on Mumsnet it seems). The only thing I’m worried about really is idiots walking their dogs on hot pavements but that’s another story.

There have been multiple threads today with people debating whether to call in sick or not because of the heat. I mean what the fuck? I’d be sacked if I didn’t show up because it’s too hot!! And no, I don’t work in an air conditioned office.

Yes it’ll be hot, but for the vast majority of people it won’t be a health risk provided they act sensibly.

If you are wearing leggings and a hoodie and its 24c you clearly are made of different stuff to me. Im in nowt but shorts/skirt and t shirt at any temperature beyond 18-20c.

26c indoors, in shade is enough to make me feel really ill. In the sun at 26 or higher.......... for more than about half an hour and Ill be desperate for shade.
Goodness knows how Ill cope tomorrow/tuesday but I imagine Ill spend most of it with my feet in a bucket of water and a wet flannel on my head.

chiffchaffchiff · 17/07/2022 23:39

I acclimatised to the heat in Australia and south east Asia. It didn't take long either. I'm still dreading the next two days in my insulated house in England.

onlythreenow · 17/07/2022 23:39

I live in a country which has a mostly temperate climate. We get temps up to 40C every now and again - and I've never seen this level of angst here. We just get on with it. Not everyone here has air con, and we certainly didn't have it at all until a few years ago, yet somehow we managed. If the weather is forecast for temps of 40C the whole country doesn't go into panic mode!

friendlycat · 17/07/2022 23:40

I think we will have to wait and see what the weather actually is. I’m in Hampshire and it’s a nice cool evening and now raining. That certainly wasn’t on the forecast.

Tomorrow's weather now showing 32 for here. Of course that’s still hot but not quite as bad as what was being predicted.

I'm not minimising the heat and fully understand that it’s dangerous for some groups of society, but do think the media have over egged the situation as usual as well. For the vast majority of people it will be an uncomfortable two days but cope able with sensible behaviour. I just don’t think the wall to wall media coverage is commensurate with two days of very high heat which creates a scaremongering reaction. But as stated I realise it will be challenging and dangerous for some.

SaySomethingMan · 17/07/2022 23:44

I’m with you 100%, OP.
The drama, goodness me!
I love the heat but the continuous morning about a couple of days is enough to put me off. Geez!

To clarify on PPs comments about acclimatisation, you live in a place that gradually warms up over time and/or doesn’t dip below ‘comfortable’ temperatures. It actually takes about two weeks to acclimatise to hot temperatures - over that period your blood composition will alter as will your pattern of blood flow (opening of smaller, surface veins) so that your body is more efficient at cooling in those higher temperatures.

Since we have erratic weather here and a much wider temperature range to deal with, we do not have time for our bodies to make these adjustments, so will be less able to keep cool. It’s a physical fact.

Add into that the design of our buildings, clothing and even transport infrastructure and it all becomes more uncomfortable/dangerous.

That’s possibly a huge portion of the world.
Admittedly, they’re probably far too busy to be critiquing the outfits of people who live in countries with terrible weather and therefore obsess so much over it.

sidheandlight · 17/07/2022 23:47

well head back this way and land in Ireland in November and take your hoody and PJ's and we'll see what plans a soldier like you wants to commit to for various weather reasons.

Why are people being so rude and horrible to OP??! What happened to human kindness? There really is no need for nastiness!

Soured by the heat, I guess.Grin

iklboo · 17/07/2022 23:51

Unfortunately I don't. Two of the medications I have to take on a daily basis increase my sensitivity to heat and make me more susceptible to fainting, overheating and heatstroke. Even indoors (in a UK house which is, as standard, fully insulated and double glazed to retain heat where possible. It's a bloody nightmare - even 24° can be really horrible. I definitely wouldn't be in a hoodie.

Even so, no need to tell OP to eff off.

Lysianthus · 17/07/2022 23:51

It's going to be 40 here tomorrow.
The met office, who I guess have a clue, have told us to watch out for power/internet/water outages. It's a red warning and a state of emergency.
Ok, I can live with that. Personally. But here's the thing. Business can't. Think transport. Lines buckled, fires on tracks. Roads melting. Cars breaking down. Yup, not a problem if you're WFH. But huge if you're running a busy or trying to commute. Hospitals run on staff being able to get to work. And supplies being shipped to hospitals. Schools are out (hurrah!) so they're ok.
But ultimately no one in the UK (south of Manchester but I accept that's a generalisation) can be oblivious to the inevitable disruptions and I hope you are all ok in Monday and Tuesday. Stay hydrated.

Quornflakegirl · 17/07/2022 23:53

I spent a decade of my childhood in Africa. In February it was so hot you couldn’t touch the steering wheel of the car and cigarette lighters would explode if left in the car, it was truly brutal heat. Winter days there could reach 30
degrees by mid afternoon so I too know heat.

However, I find anything over 30 in the UK equally as brutal. Our house is a sweat box and you roast in your home, there is no escaping it. So please keep your uninformed comments to yourself.

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2022 23:54

Saying it'll be 38c.

In North East England.

I cannot wait until Wed!

To think it can't be that hot?

I thought that! The people slagging off the OP and telling her to fuck off for daring to express an alternative opinion are probably the ones who are planning on ringing in sick tomorrow because it’ll be a bit ‘ot. Ridiculous.

I grew up in the ME, at school in the winter we were in trousers and hoodies, it was 23-25, we were acclimatised to the heat. A random couple
Of days when it's shit the rest of the year is rather different to living in the tropics.

My flat was 32 degrees today and it wasn't even that hot outside. I had to stay in to do some work and honestly started to feel sick with not being to cool down and my router for wifi stopped working (confirmed by virgin it overheated). Honestly dread to think what temp it's going to get up to tomorrow.

Our buildings in the UK aren't set up for these kinds of temperatures.

Libre2 · 18/07/2022 00:01

I think since Covid, the media need to whip everyone up into a frenzy of panic about everything. They have stopped reporting on Covid deaths so are now doing a “it’s so hot, we’re all going to DIE” routine.

So I am with you OP. And I really can’t quite understand why you have got quite such a hard time on here. I also lived in the tropics for a few years and was very happy when the early 20s hit so I could put on woolly socks and long sleeves and trackies!

TruthHertz · 18/07/2022 00:06

I can't see how it'll be intolerable inside for most people. I've got a £20 standing fan on the go right now and it's cool enough that I'm using the same thick duvet I use in winter (because Iike the weight of it). Tomorrow I'll probs just sleep with a light sheet or nothing covering me.

If I worked in an office like most in here I'd just take a fan to work. Sadly, I'll be in a truck with no working engine, sitting in a cab right over the engine. When not in the truck I'll be outside on construction sites. Wouldn't be at all worried about being inside sat down.
