Don’t forget to put out water for birds!

A reminder for those with gardens to please not forget to put out water for the birds, bees, butterflies, hedgehogs and insects! Many won’t make it otherwise.

It doesn’t have to be fancy bird baths, just any old plate, bowl or even a shallow oven plate is perfect for hedgehogs, so they don’t drown!

Appreciate bumping for this thread, thank you. ❤️🦋🦔

I have put a bucket in my pond so that small insects and birds can sit on the ledge and drink without drowning, it's too deep for them otherwise.
It will have to do until I find a suitable rock.

Looks brilliant!

DS jet washed the birdbaths yesterday as they had gone green in the heat. Looking clear today and I topped them up earlier.

As per another thread our potted acers are sitting in trays of water, which I guess will do for the wildlife tooSmile

Minoloso · 17/07/2022 23:33

Thanks for flagging this. I’ve just been across the road and left a tray of water on the verge for the hedgehogs & foxes or whoever wants it. I have seen hedgehogs there before.

@BlooberryBiskits - you can stretch a fitted sheet over your paddling pool until the cover comes.

Done, we've topped up our pond and also put bowls of water around. Sadly our cat is missing which we are very anxious about in case she's locked in somewhere with no water

I do hope your cat shows up soon..it's such a worry.
I think there's something about this weather. One of ours went missing a couple of days ago ( but turned up after 20 hrs or so). My friend's cat did exactly the same yesterday. Hopefully they've discovered a cool spot somewhere and are making the best of it.

Baby frogs? 😳🥰

Yep! We used to have lots of goldfish, but then they got eaten by river otters (happened to half the town). We switched off the water filter, put some more plants in, and nature took its course - frogs moved in, lots of snails, insects, even a few newts and shrimp.

Picklypickles · 18/07/2022 09:17

There's a river in the field behind my garden so no need for putting out water, and with the neighbours 2 cats prowling about my garden I'm not expecting there to be much wildlife hanging about!

Just came across this thread and have now put out three bowls of water including a shallow plate. We have magpies, pigeons and squirrels in our garden.

Whammyyammy · 18/07/2022 14:01

We have a bird bath which is refilled every evening and it's used a lot, a smaller bird bath that hangs in one of the trees and a pond.
The pond gets used by bigger birds, but was shocked yesterday as was sat near the pond and saw a bloody great snake in it....

Husband came down and saw it, apparently its just a grass snake and all normal , he's seen it in there a few times when it's hot.... and forgot to tell me..... i won't be going neat the pond on hot days then

Phrenologistsfinger · 18/07/2022 14:03

Bump!

yes, we’ve got water out for the birds and insects, plus a bucket for foxes and badgers and a shallow tray in case of hedgehogs.

AndStand · 18/07/2022 14:15

I keep bees so they've got a bowl of water filled with marbles to stand on.
And a fresh bowl of water out for the birds.

OldEvilOwl · 18/07/2022 14:18

Just put a shallow and a deeper dish at the bottom of the garden, will keep a look out for whatever comes to use them

Fivecluckyhens · 18/07/2022 14:20

Fantastic thread! I adore all the photos 😍

I know there isn’t probably anything I can do but we have birds with chicks in the guttering, will they be ok?iv put some bowls of water on the garage roof.

onmywayamarillo · 18/07/2022 14:24

Ah yes I put an old plastic tray in the shady part of the garden and added some nice round pebbles, it has been used!

Added some bird food to a small dish nearby, and most of it has gone so that's great 😃

Comefromaway · 18/07/2022 14:27

We have a spare dog water bowl that I leave outside filled up in summer

ellieboolou · 18/07/2022 14:38

Our elderly neighbour has a career come round in the mornings, she hung the washing out and I asked her to fill the 2 bird baths up - she looked at me as if I was mad (but kindly did it)

Sadly it gets so hot that they sometimes die. We had it happen. I don’t know if there is anything you can do..

Here is how you can make a butterfly feeder, cheap and easy!

I fill our bird bath every morning. I put it in the shade today. Various birds have been in it today, and even a squirrel was in it the other day! I've put a shallow (about 1 inch) tin on the ground, for hedgehogs or any other creatures.

emmathedilemma · 18/07/2022 15:20

I put some in the work garden at lunchtime and will water the foxes when I get home later!

IHateFlies · 18/07/2022 16:05

I put a couple of trays of water out.
We used to have lots of birds in our garden but a cat got a pigeon recently and no bird has been back since Sad

Theluggage15 · 18/07/2022 16:06

Yes, I’ve put some dishes of water out, always do in a dry spell. We have a second lot of baby birds in our bird box. It’s in quite a shady place but was a bit worried about them in the heat. They’re still shouting away though, hopefully the busy parents can make use of the water, they’ll need it.
