Don’t forget to put out water for birds!

A reminder for those with gardens to please not forget to put out water for the birds, bees, butterflies, hedgehogs and insects! Many won’t make it otherwise.

It doesn’t have to be fancy bird baths, just any old plate, bowl or even a shallow oven plate is perfect for hedgehogs, so they don’t drown!

Appreciate bumping for this thread, thank you. ❤️🦋🦔

We have poultry drinker thing that the water seeps down into, it seems to work ok, also there is a bird bath and a couple of bowls

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 17/07/2022 20:44

Thank you for the reminder.

We occasionally see a hedgehog in our garden and we have a little (we think!) family of hares. Plus lots of Blue Tits and Robins bobbing about. It's not as hot here in Scotland (20°C, cloudy) but its muggy and we've had little to no rain.

You've inspired me to get a birdbath!

stopusingmyusernames · 17/07/2022 20:47

Bumping-will go and do it now 😊

RaspberryHoney · 17/07/2022 20:48

Thank you everyone! You’ve put a smile to my face.

Yes absolutely. One of our bird baths was empty this morning and a wood pigeon sat looking at me until I filled it up, then hopped straight on for a drink. And we’ve topped up our pond - had a deer drinking from it the other day.

As soon as you put water out you can notice the same animals coming back day after day. That pigeon has moved in now. 😅

I don't have a garden myself but I love seeing MN looking out for wildlife 😀

Any water. For insects and bees put a leave, flower or stones in the bottom of a shallow plate so they can drink without drowning.

Thank you I will just nip out and put a leaf in

Quirkycarrot · 17/07/2022 21:44

Did put a cake tin out for the magpies, thanks for the reminder about insects- will stick another out with a stone in it.

I've been refreshing each evening by using whatever is left for the plants and then refilling.

timtam23 · 17/07/2022 21:49

I put a few out today on my allotment - plant pot saucers, an old seed tray and some of the plastic tubs that supermarket mushrooms are sold in. I also have a very small bird bath filled with water and stones for insects. Loads of birds hang around on the allotment so I already feed them regularly

You can basically put water almost anywhere then, if you don’t have a garden. 😅 Just a next to a tree.

The starlings were loving our water bowls this week!

I’ve done mine - one deeper bowl on the patio and one deeper bowl and one shallow Hedgehog friendly one at the end of the garden. Haven’t seen a hedgehog for years but hoping there are some around!

PinkFing · 17/07/2022 22:09

Done 🪲🦉🐞

MyDogsTheBestDog · 17/07/2022 22:10

My hedgehog turned up at 9.15 straight into the water dish :)

7Worfs · 17/07/2022 22:11

Thanks for the reminder, OP - it made me get out of bed and set up two big plant saucers on the ground (I had only one plate before).
I also have two bird baths and a pond with lots of lily pads for the insects (though they are mostly occupied by baby frogs these days).

Paramummy3 · 17/07/2022 22:15

This reminded me too! Thanks 😊

scrivette · 17/07/2022 22:16

I have been topping mine up and put out extra little dishes with pebbles today.

The wasps have been really thirsty and using them constantly, I got a bit cross with people on my garden flapping at them yesterday, they were just looking for their drink!

That's a great photo of the bird bathing.

Remember the poor Goths as well. Dishes of snake bite will help them on the heat.

And the redheads. We appreciate a quick spray of spf as well Grin

I'd be glad the rats and mice could have a drink too if I'm honest.

I’m worried about them drinking out of my paddling pool 😬

it’s too big to empty/refill daily and I didn’t realise when I bought it on Sat it didn’t have a cover (one is coming on Tuesday ). I’ve covered it with 2 tarps but unfortunately they dip a bit so water above. Slight worried about what I may find in the morning/if is sensible to use it …

LINABE · 17/07/2022 22:34

Love this thread! I have water bowls out the whole year round and feed the birds and wildlife all year too! It has been wonderful seeing all the fledglings grow and have baths together, the other day we had 10 Starlings bathing together followed by 2 baby blackbirds and a couple of goldfinch!
Thank you so much to everyone who thinks and cares about our wildlife! x

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/07/2022 22:37

I have put a bucket in my pond so that small insects and birds can sit on the ledge and drink without drowning, it's too deep for them otherwise.
It will have to do until I find a suitable rock.

Don’t forget to put out water for birds!
WhiteFire · 17/07/2022 22:45

Bird water bowl refilled and two small bowls topped up. Will do something for the insects, even if it wil be for the wasps who have taken over my bird box.
