25 degrees Mon night - sleep under the stars?

That's it really. I'm in the Red Zone. Daytime temps between 35 and 38 depending on the forecaster. Pretty consistent about night though - 23-25.

So I'm thinking, I've camped a fair bit (so have SIM etc..) but never actually slept under the stars. I'm quite tempted to! Have 2 teen dcs who I could offer the option to, but happy to do it solo otherwise.

What do you reckon?

I've never done it but on a hot day last year (so nowhere near as hot as it will be this week) my then very pregnant colleague slept outside on her rattan sofa as she couldn't get to sleep inside.

legophoenix · 16/07/2022 22:19

Sounds like a good plan - at least there's a chance of a breeze.

Hellzbellz25 · 16/07/2022 22:20

Do you have a trampoline? My dd and I sleep under the stars on ours, it's really comfy like a waterbed and saves messing about with a tent!

Fizbosshoes · 16/07/2022 22:21

DH and DS did this last year one night, I might consider it on Monday

AuntieDolly · 16/07/2022 22:21

Won't you get bitten to death?

No. Fell asleep a few nights ago in the garden and have been bitten to buggery (not entirely sure that's a phrase!)

Yes with a mozzie net, or clothed head to toe including socks and a balaclava 🤣😭

When me and DC tried to sleep on the lawn once (on a blanket,) we got dozens of snails coming at us! Never again! Shock

Maybe as a pp suggests, sleep on a trampoline. (I still would not sleep outside though personally!)

Kerrrmieee · 16/07/2022 22:24

Slather yourself in Sudocrem - Id recommend a good inch all over!

LubaLuca · 16/07/2022 22:25

I'd be like a beacon for every biting insect in the area. There's also bigger wildlife I wouldn't want to have to share the garden with in the wee small hours. I'd be woken every couple of minutes by noises my ears aren't trained to block out during sleep.

I'm a big baby about this sort of thing so I'm not even tempted to do anything but try to keep cool in the comfort of my own bed. Cotton nightie, no duvet, fan on. I might go to bed with wet hair as well, that seems to be very cooling.

SarahAndQuack · 16/07/2022 22:26

It would be better, if you can, to draw the curtains in a north-facing room, and then to sleep there. If you're in a badly insulated house, maybe on the ground floor rather than upstairs. Outside, the temperature won't drop so much it'll mke up for the biting (and the uncomfortable bed!).

Mamamia7962 · 16/07/2022 22:28

When my son was young he and his Dad used to sleep in a tent in the garden on hot summer nights. My son loved it!

Years ago I used to sleep under the stars on a pavement in South West London once or twice a year, in the Wimbledon queue. It wasn't terribly comfortable, the noise of cars driving by was annoying, but I loved being out in the open air, being nice and cool rather them sweltering in a tent, and opening my eyes at dawn and immediately seeing clear blue summer skies. I never got bitten but was on a city street rather than in a garden so maybe that made the difference.

colouringindoors · 16/07/2022 22:38

So i need to buy a mosquito net tomorrow and sleep on the garden sofa to avoid the snails 😅

I slept on a trampoline once as a student after a house party on a hot night. Pretty comfy!

colouringindoors · 16/07/2022 22:40

do Amazon Prime sell mosquito nets?!

I'm sat in the garden now and the temp is lovely.

Answer: yes they do but can't deliver til Tuesday.

I've got tiles on the floor in the kitchen, thinking that may be the place to be with the futon mattress.

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 16/07/2022 22:52

DH has a two man tent with a mesh roof, so we are seriously thinking about sleeping out on Monday and Tuesday. I have never camped before but it’s already 25C in our bedroom and will only be hotter each night, so it’s either the air bed in the living room, or the tent.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/07/2022 23:02

Why not?! I’ve slept outside on a swinging hammock when it was 20+ deg one night. Best nights sleep ever. Woke up
with dawn breaking and nice and cool.

Vegansausageroll · 16/07/2022 23:04

if you’ve camped a lot can’t you pitch your tent in the garden? I’m considering this tbh 😂

PonyPatter44 · 16/07/2022 23:06

But...but...spiders will rub their willies on your face, and you will get darked on. Its not a risk I'd be willing to take, especially the spider willies.
