25 degrees Mon night - sleep under the stars?

colouringindoors · 16/07/2022 22:16

That's it really. I'm in the Red Zone. Daytime temps between 35 and 38 depending on the forecaster. Pretty consistent about night though - 23-25.

So I'm thinking, I've camped a fair bit (so have SIM etc..) but never actually slept under the stars. I'm quite tempted to! Have 2 teen dcs who I could offer the option to, but happy to do it solo otherwise.

What do you reckon?

I slept outdoors a couple of times when I was young. The first time the rats running over me woke me up! The second time a man spied me sleeping and vulnerable so decided he would harass me. I wouldn’t do it again.

Isaidnoalready · 16/07/2022 23:11

I'm dragging mattresses into the living room if it gets too bad

Wishyfishy · 16/07/2022 23:11

The animals and creepy crawlies in the garden would be my worry.
I know get foxes in the night because they set off the lights. I don’t know what else.

Sirius3030 · 16/07/2022 23:12

I do it quite often. Never been bitten.

MatildaJayne · 16/07/2022 23:17

I’ve slept on sun beds on the deck of a gulet boat in Turkey for 7 nights. The cabins were like saunas. I didn’t get bitten, maybe because it was at sea? I’d be eaten alive in the garden though.

chiffchaffchiff · 16/07/2022 23:17

I slept on the garden sofa one night last year. Didn't get bitten but did have my cat jump on me from the fence behind in the early hours of the morning. It's her usual landing spot and the fact I was there didn't deter her. I've never woken up in such a panic in my life.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2022 23:20

A fox pooed on our outdoor table a few nights ago so I’d be worried at being his new target by sleeping outside tbh

Infinitemoon · 16/07/2022 23:23

We have badger paw prints on our trampoline. It look like a family as there are different sized prints - not sure what they are doing on there?

Vegansausageroll · 16/07/2022 23:04

if you’ve camped a lot can’t you pitch your tent in the garden? I’m considering this tbh 😂

Yes I could. This is sounding like a better option to avoid mozzies, snails, foxes, badgers and probably in my case Muntjac deer 😅 oh and my own cat!

Last year we had one night where it was 28 at midnight (had been 35 in the day) I soaked a thin cotton night shirt in cold water, wringed (wrang?) it out and put it on. Was bliss- laid on the top of the bed with fan going and slept really well- that is my plan for the next few nights. I read it on here I think and was so hot and bothered I had nothing to lose. Was all dry in the morning and the bed did not get damp.

But...but...spiders will rub their willies on your face, and you will get darked on. Its not a risk I'd be willing to take, especially the spider willies.

this made me lol 🤣

Sorry, but I am SO TOTALLY picturing a bunch of badgers bouncing up and down on your trampoline, like having a real partaaaay!!! Grin

Going back to the original premise of sleeping outside- hell no!!! daylight at what 4.30am? weird noises, snails, massive moths fluttering around- I'm shuddering at the thought - bedroom, comfy bed, blackout curtains, wet t shirt and fan for me Grin

Can you set up a Wildlife Camera thing and find out, please? We all need to know now...

I'm tempted to sleep in the downstairs hallway. It's the coolest part of the house, but it would mean sleeping next to a tall shoe rack full of teen boys' boots and trainers. Not sure that would be a reasonable trade-off.

Saracen · 17/07/2022 02:29

My teen and I sleep on the trampoline whenever it's hot. We like it. We do usually end up waking much earlier than we would like because we aren't used to the early morning light and neighbourhood noise, but it's still better than boiling indoors.

The wildlife takes some getting used to, however! It's interesting and slightly disconcerting hearing so many unidentifiable noises. Others we can guess at. We have foxes, fighting cats, possibly a magpie, and goodness-knows-what which sounded like it was crunching up the bones of a small animal just a few metres away the other night. I'm disappointed we have yet to see any bats.

I do know that rats, mice, and hedgehogs visit the garden so I am left imagining that every rustle is one of them.

Saracen · 17/07/2022 02:31

I haven't been bitten by insects at all this year. Last year I slathered on the bug spray.

sashh · 17/07/2022 03:36

If you are sleeping on the trampoline spray insect repellent on the underside and all the struts - is that the right word? The bits that hold it up.

One of many useful things I learned in Oz, I'f I'm eating outside I spray the underside of the table.

Also get one of those plastic bracelets - they look like a spring - I put one on my ankle in summer because I am an insect magnet.

When I say insect magnet I mean it, I shared a bed in Mauritius, sleeping under a mossy net and got bitten every night, the person I was sharing with stayed an extra week, only after I left did he get bitten.

OP I slept in my garden a few years ago - I loved it.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 17/07/2022 06:27

My house is old, thick stone walls, stone floors and thatched, so it is cool and comfortable anyway, but I frequently sleep in a hammock in my garden, just because it is a lovely experience to be under the stars and accompanied by the night sounds and wildlife. Why not just try it OP, it might be fun!

anotherbrewplease · 17/07/2022 06:37

@Hedgesfullofbirds - your house sounds lush - do you mind if I move in?

Great thread OP - report back please on how you get on.

I live in the cooler North West so probably won't sleep out...

Hedgesfullofbirds · 17/07/2022 06:56

@anotherbrewplease - come and join! I share my house with many living things, a bat roost in the loft space, sparrows nesting in the thatch, spiders, violet ground beetles, woodlice and a shrew which lives in the kitchen and puts in an occasional appearance! They are all welcome, it is their home too! One more tenant won't matter😁

Yeah the daylight at 4.30am is putting me off slightly. And insects. I have blackout curtains but not sure they are quite long enough as they definitely don't black out enough. I still wake around 5, then try - often unsuccessfully- to go back to sleep

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/07/2022 07:10

We do it! It’s lovely although you will be awake early! Get some jungle spray.
If you have a decent tent you could always just put up the inner layer?

User952539 · 17/07/2022 07:14

We have a mosquito net over our bed from may through to the end of September. We then slept with all the windows open without the issue of biting bugs in the room. I know you can’t get one until Tuesday but it’s a useful thing to have.

pippinsleftleg · 17/07/2022 07:20

This sounds like a great idea! I’m tempted to sleep on the trampoline with DD, but a bit worried about bugs.
