AIBU?

To not want their car on my driveway?

I live in a city in a ground floor flat, no garden but I have a driveway that comes with my flat.

I don't have a car so this Is why I don't know if I'm being unreasonable..

My doorway / driveway gets alot of direct sun so I like to dry my washing out there on racks when the weather is nice. I also like to sit out there on a chair with a cold drink and a book sometimes.

A few months ago a family moved into the flat above me and have taken to parking their big people carrier on my drive. They didn't ask my permission, just assumed they were entitled to because I don't have a car.

My frustration is when their car is there I can't put my washing out, it also blocks alot of the sun. They park it diagonally aswell which is a PITA for me getting my pram in and out.

They are out there at the minute cleaning and hoovering the car about 3ft away from my doorstep so I can't sit out and enjoy the sun / a bit of peace and quiet.

AIBU to be unhappy about them using my drive in this way? The poll results will determine what, if anything, I say to them.

Car and accompanying note has gone. I half expected a knock on the door to discuss it but nope nothing. Hopefully it stays gone now 😀

I had a thought @Parkingmoan1 if their English isn’t very good, maybe they’ve been assuming the parking space is theirs and they have been thinking you’re in the wrong hence the lack of friendliness/rudeness when you’ve said hello???
Hopefully it’s sorted and they haven’t reappeared yet 👍

Put a padlocked chain or gate across it, Voila! With a sign on it saying "Private Property No xx"

I love the fixed planter idea.

One of my friends had this issue and they put planters at the end of her drive and a seating area and made it into a patio. It’s lovely we had a bbq out there last weekend. It’s round the back of her flat so it feels like a natural space to have a patio.

This is a very good suggestion 👍🏻

Please don’t presume people can’t speak English just because you haven’t heard them doing so.

Please don’t presume it’s only neurodiverse people who find confrontation and difficult conversations unappealing.

Please just talk to your neighbours and ask them nicely whether they were aware it’s actually your space before you run to your landlord or property manager.

it appears to be you who is making all of the assumptions here 🙄

You could fill 4 pots with concrete and stick a post in each to set. Then put a pot in each corner and some rope or plastic chains attached to the posts to create a boundary. Stick the kids pool out there to use and some more pots either flowers in.
Temporary but marks the boundary.

A cheap, cheerful and temporary way to fence off the space would be to use beach wind breaks and "plant" them in buckets of sand. It would give a lovely beachy vibe and also increase the safety for your children. You would need to lie them down if the wind does really get up, but they'll still be in the way to stop people parking there!

This thread has reminded me of the previous parking thread that referred to a driveway as a "patio with aspirations"!

It wasn't the same scenario as it was a "driveway" without a dropped kerb, but as OP wants to use her driveway as a patio, it seemed apt!

Long may you have access to the property you pay good money for OP!

I’d install a parking lock at the entrance to the drive, one that lifts up/down and you can lock it in the upright position. It’s really not fair and you’re not being unreasonable.

Let's hope the car goes and stays gone.

I can't believe how cheeky they've been and I don't think it's ignorance, they're just chancing their luck by trying it.

I know there was a bear statue up for sale in keswick. Could it be that one? I'll see if I can get a pic.

Wrong thread?

Joined up thinking, though. Subconsciously.

Bear statue woman should lend it to this OP.

That’s good. Hopefully problem solved.

Allocated parking in car park type areas and where there are flats and it’s not entirely obvious who spaces belong to becaue they’re fenced off Toni divide properties always seems to cause these problems. It makes you realise the luxury of the private drive which is separated from the neighbours.

Enjoy your space for whatever you fancy doing in it.

I assume this was aimed at me? If you took the time to read more than the date it lists things you can do to solve the problem 🙄
