Whether it's too hot (it's going to be 40° on Monday don't you know🙄) or too cold or snow or wind etc...

AIBU to think we are a bit pathetic in the UK and a bunch of over reactors when it comes to any sort of "extreme" weather.

Whilst I do understand that... It's 2 days for Christ sake.

Tell that to the "thousands" expected by medics to die from the excessive heat in the UK.

You know the military have to do training for extreme heat to get there bodies climatized before there deployed. We aren’t climatized for it.

Some of us have lived abroad. The idea all houses in hot countries have air conditioning or are built to be cool is simply not true.
What is true is that people have different behaviour i.e. closing shutters, blinds and windows and staying indoors. Not going to a theme park as some on MN are planning.

Yeah I didn’t mean that literally every single house abroad is built like that, just that generally they’re better equipped for it than we are

This ITV weatherman has a response to all the people saying 'just deal with it' or 'it's just summer'

I do think that (to a degree) people in hotter countries deal better with it a) by behaviours ie closing shutters, staying inside during hottest part of the day, getting up early etc and b) because to some extent their body is used to a warmer climate. I've been on holiday in Portugal several times in March. And when it's 20° we are all happily putting tshirt and shorts on while the locals are wearing thick coats, hats, scarves etc.

They might not all have aircon but I'd take a bet they don't have a foot of insulation in their loft space either. Rubber seals on every window and door.

Lots of hot places use tile and stone floors rather than wood and carpets.

Actually our loft and house insulation helped even in heat in summer...

all you have to do is stay inside with the fan on, if its that bad. It will soon be over sadly.

A fan won’t cut it in heat above 35c. In fact it’s dangerous to use a fan in temperatures like this.

Also what do you mean it will soon be over sadly? You want it to go on so more people suffer for longer. You’re obviously not living in a top floor flat in a major city with no ventilation and medical issues.

Do you know how insulation works? My house is quite cool even in heat precisely because it has over a foot of insulation in the roof. We have a small utility room extension with less insulation & it’s noticeably hotter.

In Australia they actively sell ceiling insulation (often wool batts) as a remedy to cool your home.

I've used a fan in heat above 35c, it was better than nothing. Why is it dangerous?

I swear I will scream the next time someone bangs on about insulation. Insulation is for heating AND cooling.

Not many places have to deal with lots of different types of extreme weather. We have to be jack of all trades and this means masters of none.

So true! And this is one reason I love this country so much... The diverse weather.

Bubblebubblebah · 16/07/2022 20:56

There are lots of countries which have -15 in a winter and 30 in a summer. Seasons. Uk is usually pretty similar temp throughout year imho, wxcept few weeks there and there.

youkiddingme · 16/07/2022 21:04

Classify yourself however you like, but saying other people are pathetic is always unreasonable in my book.

Might I suggest both of you do some studying about worldwide weather - you may well be surprised by what you learn.

Simple planning could mitigate a lot of the potential issues. Toronto learnt from high temperature one summer and allows people to be in air conditioned public buildings. Old churches seem to be cooler and could be an option.

Notice who missed the COBRA meeting today? Yes the man whose lack of attention in March 2020 caused many avoidable deaths.

Not that his presence would've achieved anything much anyway.

I'm on certain medications, which means I will need to careful in the heat as my core temp is already slightly high as a side effect. Two of them being antipsychotics and lithium. Lithium especially, I will have to be careful as extreme heat can cause lithium levels to rise and cause lithium toxicity, which can make people very poorly, or worse hospitalised. So yes, I am a bit worried about how I'm going to cope
