Whether it's too hot (it's going to be 40° on Monday don't you know🙄) or too cold or snow or wind etc...

AIBU to think we are a bit pathetic in the UK and a bunch of over reactors when it comes to any sort of "extreme" weather.

That's not the same as suggesting I think people shouldn't change anything and should just walk their dogs as normal and let their kids slide down the metal slide at the park etc...

You really aren't very bright are you? Some people on anti-psychotics, or OAPs or people with diabetes, or dementia will die. Many of them because no one bothered to knock on their door and ask if they needed anything. Why not do that?

Bumtum126 · 16/07/2022 07:20

Lots of other countries struggle with weather extremes not just the UK. Which countries do it well? I've seen lots of talk but not much hysterical talk a link would be useful.

It's the British thing isn't it, talking about the weather!

I'll be in a commercial kitchen on Monday, I'm not worried about it but I know I'll be a sweaty mess. We're not geared up to deal with extreme weather but at least we know in advance and can plan to some extent, some people are definitely being a bit OTT.

I get annoyed with people who won't drive in snow. The first snow after I'd passed my test at 17, my dad took me out and taught me how to drive in it, I'm not phased by it at all now. And snow is much more common than extreme heat!

I hate driving in snow but it’s not me I’m worried about it’s other drivers who don’t leave appropriate gaps and don’t keep moving uphill

id much rather they stayed home

@Usery well, yes…. You said “to think we are pathetic” don’t ask for my opinion then tell me it’s wrong! You asked if we were pathetic, no you told everyone we are pathetic. 40degrees is hot. Best of luck.

Ok, so will you be carrying on as normal on Monday and Tuesday?

I am willing to bet not. And that you’ll be flapping about how hot it is.

Minimalme · 16/07/2022 07:23

My God. This has been done to death.

It affects only a certain part of the UK which will see unprecedented extreme heat, reaching 40C.

For the first time.

So no one knows how it will be and some people are scared.

And that's fine.

You're not op, and that's also fine.

Now no more dull, done to death threads please.

MsTSwift · 16/07/2022 07:23

Realised my love of heat is only love of heat when I don’t have to actually do anything and am close to a pool or beach ie on holiday!

We have house swapped to southern Spain in the summer with toddlers it was fine but we could nap / stay in in heat of day and had a pool.

Divebar2021 · 16/07/2022 07:24

My objection is that quite a few of the posts I’ve seen have such an unnecessarily dramatic tone - people sound panicked and who does that help? Nobody. All it does is stir up panic in other people which is how we ended up in COVID with no toilet roll and hand sanitiser. These people also don’t particularly sound that bothered about anyone else either just themselves. I doubt many people are going out to find rough sleepers with supplies.

Blimey sounds like the heat is already getting to someone.

A lot of it is the media, they are the same with everything, weather dramatics used to be just the front page of the Mail, Express and Sun, now it everyone vying for clicks and TV viewers. Drama on websites like this and Facebook just add to it all

The thing is, I think the media have to dramatise it just so people take notice. If they played it down then you probably would get people with no common sense thinking 'oh, it's a nice day for a run, I'll go out just after lunch' which would cause problems. At least this way people are taking notice and making sensible precautions (such as making sure they have sun cream, taking water and a sun hat with them when they go out etc)

Littleoakhorn · 16/07/2022 07:27

I live in Germany, where normal summer temperatures are 20-30 but we get a heat wave like this at least once or twice. You don’t need air conditioning to keep cool in the heat, just a good understanding of how to manage the heat in your house. So keep shutters/ curtains closed and keep windows and doors closed if it’s hotter outside than in.

Look after your neighbours if they are elderly or have mobility problems. It’s just a day or two of being sociable and I’m sure even brits can manage that.

As a genuine question, why would someone on anti-psychotics die in a few days of heat?

MajorCarolDanvers · 16/07/2022 07:28

Given that loss of life is predicted with the extreme weather -

No

Usery · 16/07/2022 07:28

At no point have I suggested people shouldn't check on their vulnerable neighbours etc...

However I do think Jane Smith complaining on MN that she has to walk her kids to school when it's 'unbearably hot' is pathetic.

Panic over snow and ice annoys me. Many times I’ve driven past colleagues houses in snow to find they’ve been snowed in and I have to cover their work when in reality I’d already driven 10 miles before passing the end of their street.

the heat next week I’m dreading. I work for the NHS in a building where this week I reported the heated for still being on, windows that only open 10cm, no air con and will be driving round on house calls where I wear my apron, gloves and masks for an hour at a time. The house calls aren’t urgent but there’ll be no allowances for me to not do them and rearrange for cooler weather because you know, KPI targets over staff well-being.

If it's the same poster I'm thinking of, it's an hour long walk each way with small children. That isn't safe in 36+ degrees with no acclimatisation. If I had no other way of getting the kids to school, I'd stay home and endure your mighty online wrath.

So it is ok for you to be concerned about the heat but not others to be concerned about other weather? Hmmmm

What difference does it make to you though? If someone is concerned about walking their child in that heat how does it concern you or make absolutely any impact to your life whatsoever?

Well there isn't really anything else left to talk about other than the temperature, we've done all the other subjects to death;
There's mostly rubbish on TV,
Tik-tok is eroding society,
The Government isn't /can't govern,
The 'Leadership Selection' won't change anything,
Living costs are increasing massively,
The Jubilee has finished,
Brexit is 'done' 🙄,
Putin is mad,
Prince Andrew...,
etc. etc.

Also, the likes of you bleating that people shouldn’t be worried will give people doubts about whether it should be a concern or not. And they may think “oh actually it’s fine” and then not do the right thing.

So if you haven’t got anything useful or constructive to say….. and reflect on why you feel the need to decry the worries of others.

I am on other threads about this.

I haven’t seen hysteria. The hysteria I have seen is from those moaning we are being over reacting for pointing out risks.
