Whether it's too hot (it's going to be 40° on Monday don't you know🙄) or too cold or snow or wind etc...

AIBU to think we are a bit pathetic in the UK and a bunch of over reactors when it comes to any sort of "extreme" weather.

YABU.

40° is extremely hot for a country not equipped for it at all.

We've had temps like that where I live a few times this summer, with more expected in the next few weeks. I have air conditioning though. I really feel for people facing this kind of heat without any way of getting comfortable.

Please look out for your neighbours, especially elderly people who may have a very hard time when the high temperatures hit.

BluePassportsAreBollocks · 16/07/2022 06:49

If you aren’t worried and don’t like it then ignore the media and do something else. No one is making you read or engage with it.

Calling everyone pathetic for worrying about something that we aren’t set up for here is pretty pathetic in itself really. I can think of nicer ways to start the day.

devildeepbluesea · 16/07/2022 06:54

Way to miss the bloody point.

I love the heat, am not overly worried for myself but I can wfh in my shady, cool house with a breeze from the open windows.

We’re not set up or used to temperatures like this so people will have to go to schools and workplaces which aren’t air-conditioned. We will have to persevere in the hottest part of the day. Most people don’t have a fan, let alone air-conditioning at home. Many houses are specifically designed to keep heat in.

It really doesn’t take a genius to see why it’s different here to it is in Egypt or Australia.

Just seen another thread on pretty much this exact topic and the vote is very different with YANBU taking a larger lead. Maybe I just didn't word this one politely enough 🤣

You mean this thread and the other 100 threads of people complaining that people are complaining about the heat?....

Porridgeislife · 16/07/2022 06:57

40 degrees is very hot in a maritime climate. Hot months should average early 20s. Houses, public buildings & infrastructure are built to cope with this. I don’t think anyone is overreacting.

Equally, mild cool winters aren’t expected to bring with them heavy snowfall - again, we have built for damp and rot not snow!

carefullycourageous · 16/07/2022 06:58

In Spain the train tracks have larger gaps between sections to allow for expansion in hot weather. In the UK our rail tracks need smaller gaps to allow for contraction in cold weather. Now we will have Spanish temperatures with UK rails, the railway may struggle. If the railway struggles, the humans who use the railway will not be able to get to work. Some of those humans are responsible for caring for other vulnerable humans.

The impact of temperatures on metal is not something we can prevent just by having a positive attitude.

SpaghettiSquash · 16/07/2022 06:44

YABU. We do not have the infrastructure to deal with extremes of temperature and we are not acclimatised to it.

I've lived in a hot country. School started at 7:30am and finished at 2pm. It also finished for the summer at the end of May so it was closed for the hottest months of June, July and August. DCs would leave their air conditioned school, get in the air conditioned car and arrive back at their air conditioned house. They would then jump in the pool to "cool off". Everywhere had air conditioning and was set up to stay cool unlike here and most of the social life centred around the swimming pools.

Let me guess, Dubai or similar ? The local kids will not have air con schools , just the ex pats and the wealthy who can afford private schools. I also grew up in a hot country and we had neither. No pools or air con , at home or in the school. Your experience is not one I’m familiar with. We walked to school and it was horribly hot but we did all survive .

Mabelshouse · 16/07/2022 07:01

This heatwave is symptomatic of climate change. It’s of concern. And as pp has said in the uk we’re not designed for extreme heat.or cold. So it’s not unreasonable for people to be warned to take precautions.

ReneBumsWombats · 16/07/2022 07:01

Usery · 16/07/2022 06:38

Sorry did I tell anyone how they should feel?

Er, well, the implication is strong in this one. Are you NOT suggesting that people shouldn't feel any concern?

DinosApple · 16/07/2022 07:04

Adjusting, adapting and giving advice is necessary for unusual weather. It will save lives.

And of course people will talk about it. It is unusual.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2022 07:05

We walked to school and it was horribly hot but we did all survive .

Well actually you all didn't. People die in heat events in lots of countries. I grew up in a hot country. My house had shutters, blinds, fans, a basement, tree cover. We knew what to do. If all else failed we went to the pool. We didn't have a/c but we had more than the UK. And older people were looked after.

Fluffygreenslippers · 16/07/2022 07:07

The country isn’t set up for it. My husband is Indian and he says the heat feels a lot worse here. In India his parents house is all marble inside and feels like an ice cube. They also have a flat roof and sleep outside when it’s very hot. Most places and homes have air con too.
We recently moved into a snug terraced house. The double glazed windows only open at the top, it’s fully carpeted. It was lovely & cosy in winter, rn we’re boiling alive.

FindingMeno · 16/07/2022 07:08

With the pressure on the ambulance service / NHS even without this extreme heat I think strong warnings are wise.

pkcsg · 16/07/2022 07:08

You do realise people die in heatwaves don't you OP?

www.gov.uk/government/publications/phe-heatwave-mortality-monitoring/heatwave-mortality-monitoring-report-2020

Maybe have a read of this before you start throwing around the word pathetic 🤨

Believeitornot · 16/07/2022 07:10

YABU OP.

It is only two days, so why are you all het up about having to adjust things for just two days?

I’m hoping the forecast won’t be as hot as they say but I am not travelling to London to find out. A couple of weeks ago, the trains on my line were cancelled because of a rail buckling in the heat. It was an absolute ball ache. So I will wfh that day instead.

This government has failed to prepare the infrastructure for hot weather and failed to invest generally - so I am not sure why you are cross with those who can see clearly that it will cause disruption!

I would prefer people like the OP would keep quiet until Wednesday after it is all done.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 16/07/2022 07:10

Wait.

People actually think everyone in hot countries has access to air con and swimming pools and the ability to use then when they want? <facepalm>

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2022 07:11

In India his parents house is all marble inside and feels like an ice cube.

That's so funny. Sleeping on the tile floor or the marble was normal when I grew up in 30+. It's so weird to think about it now.

Do you think people in hot countries are surviving? And never die from the heat?

Usery · 16/07/2022 07:14

It is only two days, so why are you all het up about having to adjust things for just two days?

I'm not. I think there should be adjustments in accordance with the weather like at any other time of the year. But no, I don't get the hysteria I've seen over MN the past few days. That's not the same as suggesting I think people shouldn't change anything and should just walk their dogs as normal and let their kids slide down the metal slide at the park etc...

I think in the UK we are especially bad at tolerating or coping with anything outside of our comfort zone and reading some of things on here the past few days I find quite embarrassing.

Remaker · 16/07/2022 07:15

40 degrees is very hot in a country that isn’t equipped for it and the population isn’t used to it. I live in Australia where most people would have some kind of cooling at home and yeah 40 still isn’t fun. Cold weather I feel like you are reasonably well equipped for? But as an outsider I must say as a nation you do talk about the weather A LOT. Our tv weather report goes for about 5 mins for a country that is 4000 km north to south and east to west. Yours goes on for about 15 mins showing what will be happening every half an hour in cities that are less than an hour from each other.

Chakraleaf · 16/07/2022 07:16

I am worrying about the residents in the care home at work. It's already so hot in there :(

Blood pressure is an issue in heat for elderly.

Chakraleaf · 16/07/2022 07:17

Honestly its been unbearable heat already at work and I just don't know how we will cope at 12° hotter than it already is.

Bonjovispjs · 16/07/2022 07:18

Try living in my tiny south facing studio flat in London which is like an oven when it's only 25° outside and see how 'pathetic' you are🙄imagine how that's going to be next week.

What is this hysteria you refer to?

I have not seen any as you describe.

The most hysteria I have seen is from people saying we should not be hysterical and getting rather cross about it. The Daily Mail is a classic example. Screaming headlines, frothy comments etc. But grown up newspapers are being less sensationalist about it.

Makes me wonder, who are the ones actually scared/hysterical here.

PinkyFlamingo · 16/07/2022 07:19

Of course we are geared up for extreme heat, we've got houses, central heating

The last thing you need in extreme heat is central heating!
